My friend went to a fast food place and handed the lady a hundred and she went crazy. She said it was fake. He couldn't believe it. She put a pen on it and it came back good but she said the strip inside of it said $5 and it had lincolns picture inside of it. But it didn't have $100 glued on either end. Has anybody ever seen money like this or did she rip him off?

There is way of removing the ink from bank notes say $1 bills and printing $100 bills on the paper. They are good at it in South America I hear.

Wait a second, did he just let her take the bill?
If so, I'd say she probably ripped him off. You said it didn't have $100 glued on either end. What did you mean by that? It's sounds like she was saying that it was a $5 bill tricked out to look like a $100. But even if that were the case, I'm sure your friend wouldn't just let her take the bill away. If anyone claimed that I gave them funny money, and tried to take it away. I'd either make them call the cops, or I'd call them myself. Then the cop could call his buddy the T-Man and I'd stay right there until it was sorted out. And I wouldn't let that bill out of my sight until it was sorted out, or the T-Men took it away. Please don't tell this chick said "oh this is a bad bill" and your friend said "oh, ok" and walked out. Please don't tell me that.

Thanks Tommy! Yes, they describe a process that would produce a bill just like Memphis described. And it's quite possible that after the banks snapped to the fact and put the kibosh on those 2001 One Hundred Dollar notes that someone sold a bunch off on the cheap, and they made their way up here. Or someone is using the same process up here.
Still, I wouldn't let anyone just take it away, would you? *** sure not some !@#$% at the fast food joint. LOL!

WOW that's a new one! I used two naughty words in my post above. In one case the Café filters used asterisks to delete the word, in the other case it automatically substituted "!@#$%". That's wild.

Well, I can now see why counterfeters are able to pass bad bills. First to answer your question, yes it is common to print another denomination over another bill after bleaching the lower bill. This gives the bill the right feel. This is why you check a bill by holding it to light to check the strip and the watermark, which is what the gal did in this story. The reason you use a five rather than a one is the one doesn't have the water mark etc in it. There are some that will print water marks and the strips and put them between two sheets of paper and then folks will see the strip etc but then the feel of the bill is out of whack. I have seen some really bad bills get accepted, I've seen some that were just beautifully done as well. Oh, as for selling a bad $100 for over $100 tbat makes absolutely no sense in the real world. The idea is to get a good enough $100 (better to make phony twenties by the way) for a low price so you benefit from passing it.
Lastly those bill markers don't work, they detect starch is all. Go to the bank, get a stack of twenties and wipe some laundry starch on them. Return to the bank, the bills go out, and fun fun fun for those accused of passing bad bills because of the pen. |

Their was talk many years ago about bleaching a 1 dollar bill for the paper and then printing $100 bills on the stock. To my knowledge this does not work any more. The feds fixed that hole years ago...But, I would not even try.

I was amped thinking it was a misprint until we looked closer. If you looked for little printing details you can see lines in the ink and a little of the $5 underneath. Not something I would attempt but it is still going on. |

As stated the reason you don't use ones is they don't have the water mark and strip, the five and higher bills do so they use the fives.
