I have been looking at a couple of tossed out deck effects and have a question about them. When the deck is tossed out and the spectators are asked to peek at a card, how do you guard against them taking a long riffle through the deck? If you know the effect then you know why you would want them to get a quick glimpse of a card.
Hoye,(?) if I remember correctly suggested putting the rubber band on very tightly and giving clear instructions. Anyone else have any suggestions to make sure this part of the effect goes as planned? |

Wayne Dobson even performed this for only three people sat at a table... That's what I call "guts"... Don't worry too much. Just tell the spectators what to do...

Tell them that they only have a second to take a quick peek, otherwise you would have time to read their mind.

If they're standing up while holding the deck. Tell them to locate a card by touch by riffling to any point they want. After they've settled and chosen a spot, get them to raise the deck to peek at their card.

Bold is beautiful. Don't make a scene. People are creatures of habit which is why we tell them what to do. Be casual and it will work smoothly.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

Allan,
Pick audience members who follow instructions. This takes experience and is somewhat gut instinct. Also give clear and precise instructions. Lastly, if you do get busted, use it as a learning opportunity and then try to correct what went wrong. This is a magic trick for entertainment only. I am certain that after a few times you will really enjoy this great effect. Renaldi |

Read Max Maven's comments on how important the rubber bands are, a few different sizes, tightly applied at each end of the deck, and very clear directions to the spectator...there's putting a couple of rubber bands on a deck, and then there's putting a couple of rubber bands on a deck, according to Max.

The rubberbands are an important consideration. Also clear instructions are very important. The most important consideration to remember is to convince them there is nothing to see by riffling through the deck. All of that aside you also have to realize once in a while you will pick someone who is just not going to cooperate with you no matter how diligent your are.

That is why you must always have an out, just for that special someone!

So what is your 'out' if someone peeks too many cards?
