For magicians who want to combine speaking with magic, what are some of the best resources available?
I am not really interested in "shows in a box" just quality materials. I have some good material like "Communicating with Magic". Thanks, Simon

Learning to speak is a great way to not only make a little niche for yourself but also provide you with fundamental stage awareness and tools to make you a better speaker. I would suggest to go to the local book store and check out their marketing section. They usually have speaking books for sale.
As a side note, I have one of Dan Kennedy's Speaking programs, and I'd be willing to sell/trade if interested. PM me. Josh London |

In terms of resources, I can think of two really good ones.
Steve Hart is a frequent contributor to the Linking Ring, and he has held several Magic to Motivate seminars. I went to a conference put on by him a few years ago when I was putting together my Safety Guy show. I thought the conference was great and helped me out quite a bit. I don't know if he still does them or not, but if you can buy a set of DVDs where he taped quite a bit of the conference, it will give you a lot of good ideas. I used a lot of his ideas when I went into the speaking world. He is at: http://www.magic2motivate.com/default.htm Another great resource is a frequent contributor to this forum, Jim Snack. His site is http://www.jimsnack.com You should try taping him for his wealth of knowledge on this subject. Whatever resources you go with, a lot of this comes down to having a fairly solid idea to start with and letting people like Steve or Jim help you adjust the details. For example, what are you going to speak about??? One thing I've noticed in the speaking world is that there are a whole lot of people that can talk to any group on just about any topic. I've always been curious how they can be so knowledgeable on so many topics, but that's not for me to say. If you have a niche speciality, you have a better chance of standing out in the crowd. For example, I took my experience in workplace safety and combined it with a few tricks to come up with my show. But the speech came first, the magic came in a distant second, because corporate clients (at least mine) can be leery of magicians. I'm at http://www.brianthesafetyguy.com |

I will second THAT!
I have both shared the platform with Steve AND Jim, and spoke at Steve's Event for a couple of years in Florida, and he has come to Nevada and did others here throughout the West, as well as my events, and I can’t say enough great things about BOTH Steve and Jim! The industry's BEST! Deano <><

Thanks, guys. Speaking with magic has been my business for the past 13 years. Last year I put out a double audio CD, called Secrets of the Motivational Magician, filled with advice on the topic. It's on my website http://www.success-in-magic.com I also spoke at several of Steve Hart's seminars. Another great resource.
Alan Weiss will be guest speaker at the Connecticut Chapter of the National Speakers Association on March 5th. See: http://www.nsact.org for more information. His book, Money Talks, is required reading for anyone looking to get into the speaking business. Jim |

Thanks for all the tips, guys.
I am aware of Jim Snack's excellent resources. Jim has helped me a lot in the past. Thanks, Jim. I like your website, Mr. Amazeo. I want to do this, and I have been thinking about it for a while, but I really need to take action. I am still debating what it is that I really want to speak about. I don't want to be preachy, but I do want to inspire people.

Thanks for the comment on the website.
Just another tip: When it comes to speaking, the message is the most important thing. So finding a speciality, in my mind, is very important. If you are an expert on some topic, it can be fairly easy to develop a speech, but then you have to find the audience. Try to avoid the mentality of having a set of tricks you want to do and trying to fit a speech around them. You should have a speech first, and then try to figure out if there are any tricks that might help you make a point. For example, when I talk about first aid in the workplace, I need to impress upon them that an accident can happen any time and that they need to be ready to apply what they are learning at a moments notice. At that point, I bring out a Needle Through Arm trick, ram it through my arm, and start bleeding all over the podium. Trust me, it gets their attention. |

Mr. Amazeo,
Thanks for the tip! I most definitely want to make the message the most important thing. Currently soul searching for my speciality. Simon

Simon,
Another great resource is Jane Atkinson. She’s the author of a book called "The Wealthy Speaker" and has coached such top speakers as Joe Calloway. Her website is http://www.thewealthyspeaker.com/ On April 27, Jane will be conducting a half day seminar in Syracuse, NY for a new "virtual" chapter of the National Speakers Association. See http://www.NYNSA.org if you would like more information, and while there, you might want to consider membership. It's an incredible value. Our next teleseminar will be on Thursday, this week, with top futurist Dan Burris. The National Speakers Association ( http://www.nsaspeaker.org ) is another valuable resource for speakers. Jim |

I'll second Jim's comment on the Jane Atkinson product.
I'm not sure if she's still offering a bundle deal, but the Book, Workbook, and CDs are a great combo. Well worth flashing some cash for them. Timothy Hyde |
