Hey all. Well, last night I talked to the GM about switching 2 days in the upcoming months (late march/april). He told me that "Whenever you want, you can come in on a Friday or Saturday." I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing.

He didn't say it in a mean way, just really casually. I also need to get 1 day off in March, and I won't be able to work Friday or Saturday. I'm just going to go in one day during the week and talk to him. What do you think?

On another note, I was want to thank everyone in the Café that has helped me. You all have had a tremendous impact on me getting and so far, keeping the job. I really appreciate all the advice and info you have shared, and it has helped me in a ton of ways. Thanks for that.

Best,
Steve

Steve,

Do you know any capable magicians that might be able to fill in for you on one of those nights, if so get all the details worked out before you talk to the GM. Then you can offer a fill in on the night/s you are looking to be off. He just might say don’t worry about it or he might like the idea of you looking out for him. Either way he has a couple of option to choose from.

I have not had a restaurant for a number of years and maybe the game has changed but from time to time I had a client that wanted to book a show during my restaurant time slot. So I would set up a fill in before taking to the GM and get his approval before I booked the other show.

The key is honest communications. No surprises.

Best,

Tony

Don't switch often but it isn't a bad sign. Basically he likes your work but you are not instrumental, at all, in the operation of the restaurant. He needs cooks and wait staff, he doesn't need a magician but likes having one.

The key is to get this all straightened out BEFORE you even start.

Absolutely!

Even if you have no specific conflicting dates at the beginning...the smart performer will discuss 'the possibility' of conflicting dates..substitute dates if needed..personal happening's(Funerals, illness, weather, etc],that can cause you not to be present.
It is best as Danny say's to discuss this initially..so you have most bases covered, and there are no surprises.Plus it makes you appear more professional.

Best.

I should have done that. But, it wasn't done, so now I am forced to deal with this now. I only have to switch one day, and then another day I need off on Friday AND Saturday, so there is no possibility of switching. I'll just go in this week to talk to him. Thanks!

Absolutly Steve. If you learn from it, it was worth the experience. Learning from it will put you MILES ahead of most.

Congrats on the gig anyhow!
