The other day after one of my street shows, a young guy came up and intro'd him self as a learning magician. I asked him where he got his stuff and he rhymed of all the latest from Ellusionist.
I asked him if he wanted to see some thing that wasn't from "E" and did a bizarre Twist routine. His eyes almost popped. I then did some ropes and sponge balls. His mom then tipped me really well. I told him to get ahold of the classics and practice, practice, practice. I love doing sponge balls with really young kids. The look on their face when 2 sponge balls pop out of their little hand is unbelievable.

I entertain folks with magic because I can. Magic saved my life (read the Genii August issue). Probably the most rewarding time was doing shows in military hospitals for the recently wounded... just to get their minds off themselves.

Interesting how it appears that soon, since "E" is quickly becoming the norm for newer magicians, the "old" stuff will once again be new. Oh how our culture works in circles!!
I do magic because it helps me to achieve common ground with my daughter, who, if my memories of my teenage years serve me correctly, will begin to consider me less intelligent and empathetic to her problems and issues as she grows older. (That my friends is one of my best run-on sentences EVER!!) She absolutely loves magic and is a natural performer. Could be great one day. |

Great stories, what a thrill to read. Seeing the belief of magic in the spectator's eyes is the best gift we can strive for!

That is great. I started when I was REALLY young, so am not sure WHY I started. I think it was because of that WOW feeling I got when I watched other magicians. I wanted to give people that feeling.

I just got back from my accountant. He loves magic. I did Color Monte and a prediction where "his selected card" has a different back from the rest of the deck and matches my predicted card in value and color. His eyes bugged out, he started to giggle, and the expression on his face was like that of a child opening a present on Christmas day. THAT'S what I love about doing magic.

I will share two different events of too many to list.
1. My gf at the time had asked me to come to a family gathering in her hometown and asked if I would be willing to do a little magic which I happily accepted. She told me that she was really excited for me to show her great aunt and grandmother both in their nineties. We got to the house, I did a 20 minute routine in which both of them were so animated it was incredible to watch. I found out later that they had never seen magic live before. She told me for months afterwards that they still bring up my name every time they talk and how much fun it was to see "real magic" as they liked to call it. It was a real honor to be able to share such a wonderful gift with 2 very willing participants and something I will never forget. 2. I was performing at one of my regular restaurants and walked up to a table of six. I introduced myself as the house magician and asked them if they would like some entertainment. The gentleman to my left politely declined and said that they would prefer to have some time to themselves. I wished them a good evening and went off to another table across the room and several others afterwards. I kept noticing out of the corner of my eye that that table of six was watching me interact with some of the guests and how much fun they were having when I was at their table. I finished another set and went into the bar area to visit with my friend who was one of the bartenders there when that same gentleman from the table of walked up to me and said they had decided they would like me to entertain them after all. I walked over to their table and did my act and I noticed one lady in particular laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes. I finished my last routine and wished them a good evening and went back to performing at other tables. A short time later I was in the bar and that gentleman came up to me and apologized for turning me down the first time. He said "I just wanted to let you know how incredible you are. The woman that you had laughing so hard she was crying just got done burying her husband. He died in a car accident and the funeral was today. We didn't feel it was appropriate, but it was the best thing we could have ever hoped for. Thank you again for sharing your magic with us and you truly are a blessing. We just wanted you to know." That my friends is one of the many and most important reasons why I do magic. Max

I have been doing magic a little over a year. I am a Junior in high school and started when I was a Sophmore. One of the biggest reasons then was for popularity. After a while that changed. I started to perform outside of school. To see the smile and hear the laughter of kids after performing something and to see the shock on other peoples faces is the best experience in the world. To do something as simple as a twirl change and to see the shock on peoples faces is pure pleasure. Where I am from there are only five people including myself who do magic. only two of us (myself and my best friend and mentor Brandon Johnson) are really good and really serious about it. We have loads of fun while the others do not. So to do something that very few others can do is so wonderful. I enjoy doing it and enjoy capturing my audience. This is why I do magic!

Today in school I performed my version of coin in bottle effect to someone. I was only doing this effect in the mirror for only about 4 days and went out to do it. The reactions were amazing even though the crowd was from 2-6 and the 6 was at lunch. I can see that when I left the bottle and the coin inside they were trying to do the same thing. It was hilarious and fun. I live off reactions. That's why I do magic, just to know that the knowledge you have can be a world of entertainment to another. So magic from the beginning to the end I love it and that's a fact.
If you believe what you do is real people around you will.

I could read these stories all day. Thanks everyone for taking the time. I think the initial reason I got a charge out of magic as a kid was because I knew I could do something others couldn't. How cool to be 7 years-old and do things other kids and adults can't do. From 8-22 I performed for hire, made some good money for a youngster, and thought I was pretty cool to charge money for magic. Fast forward 11 years.
Adult life begins, marriage and children come, and I haven't done a paid gig in over 10 years. Most of my magic is now done on the couch, in front of the TV. And truth is, I would now do shows for people and groups free if the opportunity presented itself. I am way more excited to do magic, than the people watching. I now work in a children's hospital and the opportunity to do magic presents itself all the time. I recently spent my lunch hour in the dialysis clinic of the University hospital next to my hospital. A middle-aged lady was in hour 4 of her daily 6 hour dialysis treatment. I spent no more than 10 minutes with her, some cards, some coins, some sponges, ropes, etc... As I left, she smiled quietly and said, "You've made my day." THAT'S what it's all about. I didn't tell her, but I enjoyed the 10 minutes probably more than she did. Magic is very unique as far as hobbies, professions, and skills go. Young or old, man or woman, healthy or sick. It brings joy to so many, including the magician. I was lucky enough to be bitten by the magic "bug" when I was about 5. Now at 33, the bug bites me more than it ever did. Take care all, and have a good weekend. |
