Over the months I've had a love for poker, playing fulltiltpoker, pokerstars, partypoker with my free time. I was thinking of maby of training to become a part time poker dealer to get extra money. This is of course years off, maby 5.
Would anyone recommend this? http://www.dealer-training.com/ Or am I better off saving money to go on a plane to san francisco for 6 weeks and going to a dealer school? |

I would ask a perspective casino what they'd recommend.

Oh, I do know there are dealer training programs in Vegas, San Francisco, and Reno.

If you want a job that will make you hate poker, this is the one for you. You'll start out in the bottom section, which means people playing 1-2 and 2-4 limit...you'll be working for minimum wage plus tips, and the tips at those limits aren't so hot. Plus, you deal with a lot of jerks, who will blame you for their poor results. As has been suggested earlier, women do better than men on tips. You'll also probably come home with a sore back pulling chips from seats 3 & 8, at the corners, who never quite get them out there quickly enough. Sort of depends what else you have going on as far as opportunities, but I'd be hard-pressed to call it "good".

Blindside785, I don't know where you live, but wherever you do live I'm sure the details on how to become a poker dealer are readily available, probably on a local gaming industry or state website.
As Lobo says, the money a poker dealer makes may not be all that good. If you want to work in a casino, you should investigate what other opportunities exist in your preferred casinos. Where I live, many of the casinos are run to support charities. Some of the casino workers are full-time (e.g., the dealers). But many others are volunteers working on behalf of the charity running the casino that day. The volunteers man the cash cage, and do the chip running. My point is this. Each day, the charity running the casino that day is required to hire a special sort of locally-licensed private contractor to oversee the cash cage, and verify that the daily books balance. Apparently these people are in high demand, and make big bucks for relatively little work. I don't know if casinos in your neck of the woods operate like they do in mine. But I'm sure some others here know better than I what the "good" jobs in a typical casino are.

One thing that would concern me is the fact that as good as the program might be, you still should have a live instructor to critique your handling of the cards and chips.
For my money I would go to the Cal-Neva gaming academy or any dealer school operated or endorsed by a Las Vegas or Reno Casino. Iven
