I just hope this film does not strongly reaffirm in the lay persons mind the concept of a women's key and only place in magic is as an assistant to male magicians.

I agree with you - I hope it won't do that. However, from what I've seen I don't think it will. If nothing else, the involvement of so many respected women performers ought to ensure a constructive point of view will predominate. It might show that, historically, women have more often been assistants than magicians but I don't see it implying that women should only be assistants.

Is this going into general release or straight-to-DVD?

I heard recently, that this will be screening at Abbott's this summer. I'm attending, so I'll try to write a review and let you know what I think...

I'll be very much looking forward to reading that. Perhaps you can ask around there for any news of a wider release.

Both Street of Cards and Women in Boxes will have free screenings at the Abbott Get Together Aug 6-9. My understanding is that there will be 2 screening of each, one inside and one outside. Final times and locations have not been set yet but for the latest news, just go to http://streetofcards.tv/ and ask them on magic TV chat, they are online alot.

It seems the movie now has a DVD release.

Sadly, when I went to order a copy it was shown as temporarily out of stock (I'm hoping that's because it's been very successful and they'll be re-stocking soon).

It certainly seems to have got some great reviews from the film festivals where it's been screened.

I received my DVD a few days ago and it is every bit as good as it's hype. I watched with my 11 year old daughter and she was just as enthralled as I was. Great documentary. Highly recommended.

Great documentary! I only wish there had been more of it - some special features, perhaps, with more interviews.

Even though I'am a very latine man and not really a feminist, I find the statement "behind every magician, there is..." or even the title "Women in boxes" kind of offensive. I wish they had made a film on performing women as some have developped very strong or very subtle characters. Even though Mo Yo Miller might be one of the nicest woman I could look at, I think that she impersonates the unfair lack of recoginition generally given to women. Johnny Thompson is possibly the only exception as his wife is as important in the show as he is just because she is not "behind"
It's a truism to state that the feminine handling of a known effect is always enriching whenever it takes the performer's feminity into consideration.
Maybe this is a bit thinking "out of the box" and too much of a macho statement.

I did and thought that it was an Excellent Film. I then went and purchased the DVD from filmbaby.com to add this to my personal collection.
