I need to borrow two white doves for a week: From March 27 to April 3. (I will fly into Columbia, SC on March 27 and drive on to Charlotte, NC. I fly out of Columbia again on April 3.) I am really good with birds and you would have no worries, plus I would be happy to take you to lunch for your trouble. My treat. Please let me know if you are a magician who can help.
Also, if you know of a pet store or feed store in either area that carries white doves please let me know. I often "buy" doves with the understanding that I will return them once I have completed my shows. Thanks so much for helping me out!

Hi,
I could possibly help with the Columbia visit - I live around an hour from there. I also know a person here in my town who raises doves and would probably be willing to let you "rent" them while you are in town. I also have two doves that you could possibly use in Columbia - it depends on if I book any shows on those dates between now and then - right now I am clear for that week. Either way, I could get you some doves. PM and I can give you more info. |

Hi Autumn.....I live in Charlotte, NC but like Chad, it depends on my show schedule. Seems to be filling up. A good place in this area to look at would be a shop called "Last Place on Earth" which is a pet shop that all of their doves are Hand-raised by a breeder. They are more of a MOM and POP SHOP, but they take so much pride in their animals, and all the doves usually love people. They usually carry them year round. Just send me a PM and I can get you the phone number. There is also another gentleman about 30 minutes south of Charlotte (Rock Hill, SC) that we like to call "The bird man". He has over 100+ doves, cockatiels, Cockatoos, Mackaws, and is a member of the American Dove Association. His birds are all banded though, if that makes a difference to you. He can be tough to get ahold of sometimes, but I could give you his number also. (His retired, about 70 years old)
On the topic of Charlotte - are you performing here? I would love to meet with you and see the show and chat! And no worries, I won't bring any MEALWORMS! *haha* (and you thought you were in the clear!) |

Thanks Chad and Alpha! I knew you would come through for me. I think I will try the route of renting something from a pet shop since you guys use your birds regularly. I would hate for you to get a last minute booking and have you lacking in doves.
Yes, I would love to meet you guys even if I don't borrow birds from you. But no mealworms! HA! I will pm you tomorrow, Chad and Alpha, for the addresses of your bird people! Thanks! Autumn

Autumn,
I will be in the Heartland in the last days of March. But I could drop off doves in Memphis on the way out. Will that help? Perhaps someone in the Carolinas who is going to Magi-Whirl could bring them back to me there. Early March I'll be in the Smoky Mountains but that may be way too early. Pehaps I could get a magician or friends at Channel 8 to take them to Knoxville and hold them for you. Better yet, return them yourself at the ranch Sunday or Monday (whenever you get done) and fly out Tuesday April 3rd from Birmingham. (Monday night I will need a couple hours of rehearsal for a part in a play but it will give you proof why I'm not a fulltime actor.) Bob |

I live in Columbia and could see who might have doves available. Unfortunately I got out of doves a while back. Let me check and I'll let you know.

Thanks Bob! I do have doves in Memphis, but I am flying from Memphis to Columbia, so it is best if I pick them up in Columbia or Charlotte.
It is complex flying doves on a plane. After 9/11 they would not even consider them. Currently, some airlines are open to the possibility, but the 'birds-on-a-plane' rules change daily (bird flu, Newcastle Disease, etc.) and the expense adds up ($75-$150 in health certificates, plus $150 roundtrip). They won't even consider taking my snakes-on-a-plane. Pre-9/11 I regularly flew with snakes in my shirt and birds in my bra. Oh well...those were the days. Thank you, Matt! You are kind to offer to check on doves. I have to talk to Alpha and Chad, who are also in the Columbia/Charlotte area. They might have me covered. I will let you know. Wow! Nice to find lots of magicians in the Carolinas

Autumn,
North and South Carolina are rich in good magicians. A solution there should exists. I had forgotten about snakes (I like to!). As it happens, one of the guys at the Farmers' Co-op keeps a stock of corn snakes he catches there and has to get out of the buildings. He is also my contact for "Rent a Rabbit". Yes, I can remember the good ole days when I wore a London Fog to fly even in the summer. It was my dove transport system! (I don't have your options! Plus I usually use six doves.) Now I do everything I can to avoid flying. For someone who used to own two planes that is a big change. September is in New York again from Colorado. There is no way to drive it. (Lucy makes me get a driver now when I go over 600 miles/day too.) Tom, As far as acting goes, I'm not very brave! Doing TV commercials has the safety of the studio. Doing magic I don't share the stage with anyone not in the act so I have control. Live theater is not as safe. In May I'm doing a bit in a movie. Here's hoping post production is good! The actor will be in total terror. I always shake while I'm being brave. Live theater is toughest for me. Is a dove magician allowed to have Dumbo's feather? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks, Bob! Wouldn't it be nice to compile an online database for rent-a-dove and rent-a-rabbit? Rent-a-snake would be a little tougher for sure! Where is your snake contact?
I had a lady in Memphis who said she would happily loan me a cornsnake. When she put her hand in the tank it hissed and struck at her several times. Tough as a bear, she just said, "Now Daisy, you stop that silliness!" Then she snatched Daisy out and handed the vicious reptile to me! Ye gads! I was gracious, but needless to say, I do not (did not, will not, WON'T!) use little bite-o-matic Daisy in my show!

By the way, depending on my schedule, I have two ball pythons and a cornsnake available. As a matter of fact - one ball and the cornsnake would be available either way. Let me know if you are interested - mine aren't mean at all - they see kids all the time and love attention.

Maybe we need a "Criters R Us" thread in the Let's Make a Deal area?
How could we do that? Bob |
Autumn Morning Star Grammar Hostess Today, I corrected grammar in 1378 Posts |
Cool on the cornsnake, Chad. I pm'ed you.
Good Idea, Bob! We might consider listing leads of where we find our birds on the road. We could ask that the name of the city be in the title of the post: "Doves in Dover" "Cornsnakes in Cleveland" That way, it would be easy to search through and see what is available. Then in the post we could explain the situation, price, store hours, and the contact name. Might be a good thing! For me, I usually borrow from dove keepers and magicians. Where this situation is not available, I "purchase" the animal in advance with a credit card. I ask for the store manager ONLY, to make sure I do not run into any glitches. I follow up with a letter on my letterhead stationary and add a business card. I call again the week before and a few days before just to check and make sure everything is a go. When I am done with the birds, I return them. Sometimes they give me a deal or sometimes I pay the full purchase price. Either way, it is not bad. While I can always do the magic without doves, it is nicer to be able to include critters in my show.

I am flying into Columbia (because the rental car is about $500 cheaper per week!) and driving up to NC for my shows. John, got your message and will pm you.
Thanks for the bird tip, Alpha! These guys at The Last Place on Earth are the best. Now we have a bird supplier for responsible magicians who fly into Charlotte, sans birds.

Great Autumn...Glad to hear that you were able to get what you need! They are always helpful, and are very caring about their animals! (They Pet-sit too (as opposed to babysitting *smile*)

We have an oversupply of doves in Aiken, SC. We bought three last summer at the convention in Bristol, VA. We now have 20.
