I'll throw this out there and see what happens...
Should a performance not follow a structure similar to that of a movie or book. Introduction, rising action, climax etc? So the opening effect sets the stage as to who you are and what you do. The next few should get increasingly more stunning or complicated. The last should blow their minds, so to speak, leave them applauding and wanting more. This is all a question. Will//

You're right, Dorian..I SHOULD comment...if I didn't capture their hearts and minds with the first 6 minutes...then I KNOW I've done something WRONG...I will politely excuse myself and make for the exit. That's never happened. I've had some rough spots along the way, but overall, people are usually friendly, and love to be entertained. I usually try to "capture their hearts and minds" with the first effect or two. After that, I'll know where it's going to go... Doug |

One performers throwaway..can be another performer's Closer.
It all depends on the investment..in creativity and personalization. Not bragging..but,I have often closed close-up sets with EZ Magics [cheapo but wonderful..Steel ball and tube]. The real magic is not in the particular prop or effect...it forms from within...Oh,you already knew that...,at least I hope so. Best. Rich |

I heard that Doug Henning was notorious for taking a simple "trick" and making it truly magical.

I'm gonna throw in my two cents/ To Danny's comment I would add that in a restaurant situation your opener is just as important if not more because it may be the only trick you get to do. I was also wondering if Danny ever performed at a restaurant, I ask this because he mentioned the first six minutes, sometime I don;t even have six minutes total? Finally I close nine times out of ten with gypsy thread with dental floss, it kills, but as for cards I close with red hot mama.

I have been following this thread closely. Of course I'm looking for the perfect closer but I'm also looking for the perfect opener and all the great stuff in between.
Please keep sending your good ideas so I can cobble togehter a show. It's tonight so I need time to go buy all the props. Not a big deal. There's a magic shop not far from here. Keep the ideas coming. And for each trick (closer) you bring up, please add the bits of business you'd use during before and after to really make the crowd go wild. I can't learn from books. ok? Thanks

You know the place, basically where close up restaurant magic got its START back in the late 1800's. Charlie Schulien, (Matts son) taught me. So yea I have been in a restaurant situation or 2. See when we work in restaurants, we do it AFTER dinner, not before. So lets not get this thread off topic. Read some of Eugene Burgers books, any one really most are the same, and you see how and when it is really best to work.

Also to stay on topic, the multiple selection of cards is a great closer, but a bit time consuming.

I was going to back Danny and tell nostrings that Danny has indedd worked restaurants. But I see he has accepted Danny answers.
Adam, I have sat in O' Donovans (formerly Schuliens) with Danny and watched one of his mentors (Jimmy Krzak) perform magic and talk magic with Danny and myself. They talked about what they are doing now, and about days gone by with Matt Schulien and Heba Habba and Eugene Burger and all of em. He could write a book about it, no doubt. Believe me when I tell you, Danny has worked restasurants and knows alot, ALOT about magic in restaurants. There are a lot of guys that talk out of thier asses around here. Spouting off with little or no experience. Danny is not one of them.
