Hi all,
Wondering how many of you use fire in a restaurant or general stolling. Effects involving flash paper and lighters burning a card etc. I am worried that I will scare the crap out of some poor old lady sitting in the next booth with this big flash of fire (not a positive experience), make kids cry, or bring about liability and safety concerns from a management level. Any experiences or thoughts to share. Do you warn them? Smaller flash? Shoot fire bombs out of your hands to warm up someones cold steak? Effects would be Sankey's Phoenix Effect, In a Flash, Voodoo, Combustion. Also flash paper coin envelope, broken and restored crayon with flash paper and so on and so on. Thanks, Will//

I use a flash appearance of a deck of card (see David tone Table-hopping DVD). I ask if I can do some magic for them, with "that" (a litte twisted piece of flash paper). Then I slowly approach the candle, so they can see the burning coming. Of course, they are surprised by the nature of the burn, and by the cards appearing.

Depending on where you are I would not suggest using fire.

I always use flash paper in my strolling gigs. I do the flash deck production and Jay Sankey's In a Flash. I just bought a fire wallet and I'm going to use that too. I have never had a problem using flash paper, spectators love it. And if you bring out a lighter or approach a candle they expect your going to light something anyway. Besides it happens so quick.
If you think there might be a problem using it in the venue just check with the manager, show them the trick if need be. |

I would not recomend using fire except for cooking.
It may only be a 1 in a 100 shot that something will go wrong. Which means that eventually it WILL happen if you work enough. From an audience perspective this is not right. There are LOTS of effects that are just as good that are completly 100% safe to do. In close quarters, and with the unpredictability of restaurant environments, it is just not a good idea. Think of what happens when it does go wrong. You lose your job, you may seriously hurt someone, (Google hairspray and fire) and all for an effect that can be accomplished lots of other ways. Like I said, if you work enough, it WILL happen, why give it a chance? Things are going to go wrong all the time. Just think safe.

Will,
I mentioned a while back that I liked to open a set of magic with the flash appearance of a silver dollar. I still do. It didn't go over well with several members. You'll find that there are many members of the Café that think any use of flash paper or fire in general borders on insanity and at the very least stupidity. I don't believe using a small strip of flash paper held in your hands creates any more danger for the spectator than lighting a cigarette would. I shy away from anything on the table or tossed into the air. You're asking for trouble. We live in a litigious society. Be careful I'm wondering if anyone has information of an actual event where a spectator was hurt or injured with flash paper by a magician at a restaurant or strolling event? |

Plus, as has been pointed out here frequently, you run the risk of the Fire Marshall shutting down the establishment and you being arrested, depending on the laws in the country, state, county or city you are working in. You may be able to find one of the many threads here where this has already been discussed.

And these are exactly my worries. Burn someones dress, catches a kids hair, ashes in the drinks, burn myself etc.
I have a whole routine that revolves around fire and the burning of cards. I think I will have to save it for the right environment especially since the burning of a card does leave a smell in the air for a bit and could ruin someones dinner. Checking with the management and the local fire marshall is the best idea and I will do so. After all it is a pyrotechnic.... Thanks all, Will//

I am going to start using it but not everywhere. I like the idea of starting out my opening coins with a coin be produce from fire instead of my shirt or whatever. BUt I really feel that the use of fire is up to you. I also juggle and some places will not let me juggle fire. The other thing is a lot of people do not like fire so you might want to be a little pickie about where you use it.

When I use flash paper in ''in a flash'' I stand back from the table when I light it and it only lights for a second. I don't see how anything could go wrong. The flash is contained on the deck of cards.

Please note that the responses to the negative are not because of an anti fire stance. The pro fire guys are from Belgiuim, Ireland, and Little Rock, none of which represent the US. I know some will argue for Little Rock but I've been there.... back to the fire. As was mentioned before using fire at any level, regardless of containment, is illegal unless one either has a permit and it some cases the person getting the permit must be a certified pyro technician. There are also insurance issues at hand. There is also the possibility of someone going into a seizure and blaming the flash (remember the balloon guy sued and losing because a popping balloon was said to set off a seizure?) or general complaints from customers that a fire 'could' start etc.. So there you have it, reality doesn't matter when the law, insurance, and good business practices are against it. Note that at private parties I would use flash string but that was met by home owners having fits because they thought it would either start a fire or their kid would like the place up due to the magician. Think of that, some dippy kid burns the house down because he is a junior idiot and YOU get sued because you used flash paper in his presence. Good times.

BUT you wanted stories, I have 2 I witnessed is that enough? One involves a lady with hairspray at a corporate function and some moron using fire who thought he had "stood back" and was "being carefull". But that seemed of little comfort to her as her friends tried to beat the flames out. Turns out hairspray is quite flamable, even more so than flash paper. Was she seriously hurt? No not really. BUT is that really the point? The other involves a woman, hairspray and a sprinkler system. Again nobody suffered serious injury, but trust me when I say the water in those sprinklers has been there a while. It provides FANTASTIC misdirection for the pass mind you. Even just the fire on the head really does help so in that respect I like it. So in short yes it happens. Not often, but why do it at all? Seems to be more danger than lighting a cigarette if you ask me. Common sense tells you it is more dangerouos.

20 yeras ago I did it all the time. But the world has changed ( and I got older and more cautious). I'd NEVER use fire in a restaurant. I know people that do and see no problem with it and I wish them the best
I'm Irish and believe in Murphy's law. So..I don't. Also....people can perceive you hurt them. Their eye hurts the next day. Guess what? It must have been the fire the Magician used. Chris

I was performing at a anniversary party for an older couple. The person that hired me wanted my performance to be a surprise, so I just nonchalantly walked behind/beside the couple and brought out my fire wallet as an opener...Little did I know that the woman was on oxygen. You should have seen the panic, although subtle, not a great way to start off. Luckily nothing happened and they laughed about it later. I could be typing this from my jail cell, if things turned out differently........Now I do at times light a candle at the restaurant with the patrons permission and perform the Psychic Wire Effect but just for my special regular customers. I may even re-think that.

It is no secret...I am in the anti fire in restaurant's club.
I perform five nights a week in busy restaurants. It is almost comical imagining myself loading up with flash paper...not to mention flash appearing a coin or deck of cards over and over.Yeah, that's really entertaining..."hey look at me I can make a coin appear in a flash of fire"! IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU..it is about the guest's,and their interaction with your magic. This is something you may want to do ONCE in a strolling situation at a private gig,...but that's it.[I wouldn't} However,if you are a steady restaurant performer performing for real people in the real world[with repeat guest's]...there are so many things you can do to capture your guest's attention[without lame fire effects]..if that is what you are interested in doing. OH,do you carry performers insurance? Well it doesn't matter...because all policies I have seen DO NOT COVER FIRE. Hmmmm... I wonder why? I realize nothing I say is going is to change the minds of guy's who think fire effect's are way cool. I do know of a bartender who set off a sprinkler system using a fire effect..causing many thousands in damage..and of course the loss of his job. Rich |

Look, I wasn't trying to smart when I asked if anyone had any horror stories about using flash paper. I sincerely thought it would add to the discussion here. You guys attack this subject like a bunch of rabid dogs and it's not even worth trying to discuss it.
I'll definitely quit performing around women squirting hairspray all over the place. |

Any type of flame or fire or flash paper in a restaurant in California is breaking the law. Period.
Don't take the chance at getting a ticket for this. I understand that the fine is a minimum of $400 the frist time for you and $500 for the establishment if enforced. My brother-in-law is the Fire Chief over San Berdino County and this is where I got the information. The law is seldom enforced but when it is...it isn't pretty for everyone. Even those using flaming wallets need to be aware. The only thing I light-up these days is my fism flash. Hope that helps those who need to know. KW |
