Yes, everyone disagrees about books, it is true. That is a force for good in all of history.
But a thread like this isn't really about the books, is it? It's about people, and what they have learned, and what has helped them and moved them and what is useful to them. Fighting about Card College (or Erdnase) is missing the point. The point is WHAT people say about it. The premise of choosing ONE BOOK is obviously only supposed to make us think and discuss. We should do that without thinking this thread is actually a contest over which book is best. I am convinced Autumn did not mean it that way, and I certainly didn't mean my comments on Erdnase to be taken that way. I would bet that most of us have several--if not dozens of--books on cards. And we love a lot of them (if not all of them). When Hideo Kato writes something, whether in this thread or others, my ears wiggle and my antennae go up and I pay special attention. He has forgotten more about card magic than I will EVER learn. It is the same with Harry Lorayne. He is a legend He forgot more about EVERYTHING magical than I will every learn, and he did that before I was born. That he even comes to this forum is something wonderful and special (even if it is usually to talk about his own books ) I'm not saying that what Hideo Kato and Harry Lorayne have to say makes my comments useless. If I thought that, I wouldn't post. Nevertheless, I do think that what they have to say is 50 or 100 or 1000 times more important--in the context of card magic--than what I have to say. That's okay with me. In fact, I cherish it. My point is: don't get hung up on a single book. Read this thread for what it's worth. And a thread in which both Hideo and Harry have said something is worth something indeed. Jeff SIDENOTE: The other day I was writing a post on Erdnase when my (German) wife walked in. She looked at the screen to see what I was writing, and she saw the screen and pronounced "erdnase" as if it were a German word. Now, in German, Erde is earth or dirt, and Nase is nose. So the name is: Dirt Nose. Interesting. She had NO IDEA who this man is or how his name should be pronounced, but immediately said Dirt Nose. And in that moment I thought, EVERYONE assumes that S.W. Erdnase is S.W. Andrews. But what if the man just made up something totally different, like "Dirt Nose." Just a thought. |

I feel like I shouldn't respond to this topic, but . . .
I believe that Card College is the 'best book on card magic' . . . . . . but that's just my opinion. . . . I can offer no 'proof' . . . ( . . . uh, aren't forums in general more about offering opinions and beliefs than academic discourse? or am I missing the point? . . . geez . . . ) |

David Alexander has already identified another possible translation of Erdnase as "earth nose", which proves interesting if your candidate has anything to do with mining or mine engineering.
Alas, I believe David has since written that after examination, this was not worth following. |

As one who is finally finding some time to really get serious about card magic, I have few card magic books in my collection. Over the last month or so, I have diligently perused various postings on the Café' to help guide me in future purchases. I have found much good info. As a result I have recently purchased RRTCM (along with Wilson's DVDs), Erdnase, and a very much used copy of Greater Magic.
At this point I am finding RRTCM to be most helpful. I am planning on getting the first two volumes of Card College in the near future. I expect they will be quite helpful also. Although some postings in this thread generated more heat than light , I have appreciated the passion and info found in this thread. I am planning on additional purchases over the next few months and can use all the help I can get as I try to determine the best use of my money. The next book I would like to locate would be Marlo's RCT. It seems that it was recently reissued, but is sold out. Autumn, thanks for starting the thread and good luck on tour. Angelo |

My favourite book is Sleight of Hand by Edwin Sachs. Why? Because it started a 20 year and counting love affair with magic and related curiosities. Received it as a present from my mother one year, and it has been treasured ever since.
Since then I have bought a number of Paul Harris books, books by Fulves, Hollingworth, Gibson, Bobo, and others, and yet it is still Sachs which which comes out tops. That being said, I really enjoy the Paul Harris books |

The begining of this thread was about what book was "most useful" and one you "couldn't do without".
Although considerered a "beginner book" I might choose Magic With Cards by Garcia and Schindler. There are many practical effects in that book, and although many of the original ideas go uncredited- I would recomended it before RRTCM. It offers a practical overview of many of the standard/ classic card effects which should be digested before moving on to other books. I was a bit currious about this post: Quote:

The first seven items I found to be practically worthless, until one comes to the Marlo Gambling Routine and the Marlo Miracle Routine- good stufff- but you need to be seated with a felted surface in the Miracle Routine you need to start with a sealed pack of cards- next is a section on the punch deck- does anyone really do this kind of thing? So Far most sounds of this book sounds like pipe dream material to me. However I am having fun practicing the Faro Routines mentioned above. Thanks Jimmy for mentioning this book I have not gone through it all but would like to hear more of your oppinions on this Marlo Book- Thanks- Mark

There are so many books on card magic. But if I could have just ONE--not a series, not a 5-foot bookshelf--I would have to choose Royal Road to Card Magic. If I could have a series, that would be superseded by Card College. But if I had to choose between RRTCM and only one volume of CC, I'd go with RRTCM.

For my money, I'd have to choose The Complete Works of Alex Elmsley Vol. 1 & 2 (it was originally only going to be one book, so it still counts as one...right? )
The essays on the art of magic, wealth of tricks and all his work on the faro make this my choice. |

Past President of our Magic Circle (London), Michael Bailey, in his Foreword in the Foulsham edition of RRTCM recommends this book out of the entire contents of the extensive and invaluable Magic Circle Library.
The term 'beginner book' doesn't wash too well; many of the resources named in this thread have not only provided initial inspiration, but persistent guidance, correction and food for thought for people very advanced in their magical journey. Intriguing to see the new 'Bible-esque' version of 'Expert at the Card Table' recently released, by the way. Cheers, Chris |

From my library I'd say "The Dave Campbell Legacy" by Peter Duffie and exclusive to International Magic, London, as 0045 pointed out, has provided me with more self-satisfaction (oo-er!) and workable material.
Closely followed by "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" (surprised that hasn't got a mensh) and, of course, "Dear Mr Fantasy" by John Bannon I too am a fan of Paul Gordon's stuff, but my only criticism is that he quite often refers you to other works for finer detail. :) |
