Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anybody has had the chance to view and review this new DVD by Jay Sankey? |

I was meant to be being one of the three people appearing with Jay Sankey on this DVD but I did not be able to go to Canada for a filming because I was doing some close-up magic for my friend Fernadez at his wedding to Hortenzia.
I am glad now that I wasn't being on it. I have seen that DVD now and it is three people pretending to be friends with Jay Sankey and having a laughs together like they are being best friends with some magic tricks that are good tricks. I am not thinking it is a good idea to take three magicians who hasn't been heard of and ask money to be paid to look at them. I can be at my magic club meeting for it. I would pay 25% of the cost to be watching Jay Sankey but not the other three people. One is having a squeaky voice that is higher than Jay Sankeys. One is a big man who isn't saying very much. And the other one I have forgotton which isn't very good I know but he was looking cool with hairwax. My top two tricks from the DVDs is being. 1. T-bone - teared and restored card 2. Uniquely - Corner of a playing card and coin are swapping They are both being Jay Sankeys tricks. Not from the other three men. I would buy the DVD for Jay Sankey but not for the other three men who I have never even heard of.
Think not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

That's the point of the DVD. "Underground" Jam. Featuring work of others whom you may not have heard of. To discredit the DVD based on that is a disservice to their work in the project. Moving on...
This DVD offers a lot of variety and contains a few things I will definitely perform. I won't review each trick but as a whole I will say it is a solid purchase... regardless of size, voice or hair
He who wonders discovers that this in itself is wonder.

I probably would have been able to learn a lot from you. Good Luck in your magic endeavors. |

No, Juan is right. It's really important that Jay Sankey form strong bonds with three other men. And if Jay was only PRETENDING to be friendly with these men, well then that's it! I've had it with Sankey! Now he's pretending to be friends with men!

Juan, what you wrote is really insulting and makes absolutely no sense. Why did you submit yourself for it in the first place if you thought this project was a bad idea? Also, you don't really critize the effects, just someone's hair and voice. That's flat out rude and doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the material on the dvd.
Jeff Stone not only has some really nice effects on the dvd but also a couple of great moves that I've been playing around with. One was a coin vanish that fooled the heck out of me the first time I watched it. It's a variation of a standard move but it's so clean looking. Joe Diamond's effects are very well thought out if not particularly groundbreaking. I did like the "Visa Card" trick a lot, though. Eric Leclerc has some sweet stuff on here, including "Shy Guys", "Razor Burn" (which was featured in Genii magazine late last year), "I.L.U.S. System" and others. Very nice stuff indeed. Of course, Jay has some good material on here too. T Bone is a very clean T&R. Magi is an alternate handling of a very good sandwich effect that appeared in his newsletter a couple of years ago. The new handling is definitely an improvement. This dvd has some good material on it and for only $25, is definitely worth picking up.

I thought this was well worth the asking price. Quite honestly I enjoyed the fact that is wasn't just Sankey on the DVD.
The other guys were good, though I have to agree that my favourite effects were Sankey's. But I enjoyed the DVD very much. |

Juan--
Get a life.... I don't care if you are the greatest magician on Earth or perhaps even a better teacher than Lorayne or Ammar-- Your attitude simply sucks!!! I never saw this UNDERGROUND JAM, but even if I did, the material on it are irrelevant to the point I am making. Obviously, you are sore about not being on the DVD... YOU picked your priorities, NOT Jay. And what is up with you bashing on people you do not even know-- Attacking them on things about their hair or "squeaky" voice or the size of their body are just showing your true colors. As for your English Grammar.... That is what sucks!!! I don't care if it isn't your 1st language, or is. You are participating in an English-speaking forum... NOT a "Broken-English" forum. Show some class and simply proofread your thread before posting it or just show/email someone else who knows English to proofread it... Talk about insulting someone, huh? (And by the way-- His name is "HARRY" Lorayne. Just look around. His proper spelling is all over this forum, let alone all over the internet. Please make any future corrections to stop your unneccessary foolish ignornance. Show some respect. Don't spell it as you did here (His correct spelling is even at this thread's subject line-- Now I think you are doing things intentionally to be disrespectful and plain out cruel)): http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=4938979 Those 3 guys maybe cannot control there hair, voice or physical size. Who knows? Don't you have control of what you type into this forum?? You seem to be a sore loser based on your own decisions. Everything has consequences. I hope the wedding gig worked out for you, but please do not have a childish tangent and insult people you do not know-- Just keep your thoughts to yourself. But having these anger outbursts could ruin opportunities for you in the future. I sure as hell would never want to buy anything of yours, let alone think people would use you to promote any effect. People are vital to a magician's livelihood. You must love to work with people. This can be quoted by a ton of magicians-- Paul Harris and Kostya Kimlat to name a couple. If you have NO people (audience), what good is your magic?? I guess you can always impress yourself in the mirror... Maybe you are that type of person. Insulting people as you did, to me, shows that you may have that quality of only liking people that you have control of.... You want to be better than the next person.... Perhaps you have that notorious quality as being a Magician is like being God... Be careful. I do hope you take a good look at yourself and decide who you are and what you want to do with your life.... Because you are ONLY insulting yourself. GROW-UP!!!
You know how to make God laugh?........... Tell him your plans!!!

Hi Salby: As told Juan in that silly post of his - I hope he doesn't do comedy magic!! And, yes, how many books do you have to write before people spell your name correctly?! Anyway, thanks for mentioning it. Best - HARRY LORAYNE.

I liked the DVD. I think Shy Guys is the hit of the DVD. It's a very easy visual Twisting the Aces routine. Like me, you were floored by Hollingsworth's routine, but I found the four on-the-pants-leg reversals to be too much, especially when the effect is a reversal, and specs must be looking for it. Shy Guys is going right into my restaurant repertoire: it's an "up" effect that is visual and visible enough to be obvious to even the slowest or drunkest spectator.
"Jacked Up" is number two on the DVD in my estimation. It's an easy yet mind-blowing find the aces (or jacks) with a color changing deck climax. If you are interested in any of the cap-in-plastic-bottle routines, all you need to know is on the DVD. (How much money could that bit of info save you?) I find that Jeff Stone is my favorite contributor. He has great ideas, including a novel key routine with a killer vanish. His use of the film cannister really got me thinking, and it's the thought-provoking ideas that make DVD's worthwhile to me, the sort of thinking that has you digging up props because an idea (or several) just occurred to you. The one thing that I think is missing in the DVD is a more interactive aspect, in which performers add ideas, especially presentational ideas. If you've seen the Desert Brainstorm DVD's you know what I'm talking about. Each guy shares his method in front of the others (not isolated in a shower) and the other guys ask clarifying questions and offer possible variations or enhancements on the routine. The bottom line is that for 25 bucks you can't go wrong. I certainly got my money's worth. There are a lot of good ideas and promise in these newcomers. I think that a more collaborative project from great minds like these in the future would really be an unbeatable offering. |

Darrin,
Thanks a lot - finally an objective review. One question though . . are there some new sleights introduced as well? Andy

Yes, Jeff Stone has two killer vanishes on there.
And I second "All Jacked Up" as being a great routine. Forgot to mention it earlier.

Andy,
I don't remember much in the way of new sleights other than Jeff Stone's complete vanish. I think the emphasis of the DVD is not card virtuoso stuff, but the sort of thing one would perform doing a walk-around gig at a restaurant. |

I do not agree with Juan at all. Everyone of the magicians in this DVD had great things to offer. Jeff Stone has the ability to simplify effects and their methods. Just like Vernon said, a magician should be able to describe a magic effect in one sentence. Jeff takes that quote and delivers with most of the effects in the DVD. His Coin to Film Canister routine was great. Joe Diamond's effects are very well thought out and every move and word he does/says is justified and somehow strengthens the effect in the spectators mind. He has a great grasp on spectator psychology. Eric Leclerc's effects are awesome. I was surprised that I have never heard of this magician before. I enjoyed all most every single effect he brought to the table. His Rising Gum from Pocket was creative and definitely not the method I first suspected. Razor Burn was such a "Why didn't I think of that" effect. It looks so clean and works amazingly well for spectators. I've done it twice and had people scratching their heads. Lastly, Jay is Jay. A great creative thinker in magic who always has a few gems on almost every DVD he puts out. I applaud Sankey Magic for this DVD. I expect to see great things from these magicians in the future. It was money well spent.
