The times they are a changin'
It used to be that a DVD represented a finished and somewhat polished product. Things which had been well thought through, honed, and tweaked by sharing them with great thinkers at conventions and lectures or honed through years if not decades of performing them. Yes, for years I have felt that too much product fell short of being test, honed, and tweaked. Some of the "fell short" product reperesented good, solid ideas but just not thought through to the level of a finished product one would expect. With the reduction in cost for the hobbiest to produce a DVD, maybe we are seeing a shift to a virtual, international, 365 days a year convention. Instead of paying for registration, hotel, and airfare, you pay by purchasing products. Just like at a convention, you get to see some real gems of magic or gems in the making, and you also see some real junk. If that is the case, then what you have here with Undergound Jam is a virtual jam session at the International 365 day a year convention. Here you have a few guys getting together and struttin' their stuff; some of it good solid material, some of it not one's cup of tea, and some just a twist or tweak to something existing. Underground Jam, does a pretty good job of sharing that late night experience... and you don't have to stare through 3 in the morning, only slept 3 hours last night, bloodshot eyes. Did I like all of it, no. Did some of it entertain my eyes, yes. If you can not make it to actual conventions (which by the way can not be supplanted by any virtual experience) this is a pretty good look as a "fly on the wall" into that experience. For that reason I would recommend this. It has that goofy, impromptu, hint of comraderie that you would feel at a late session. It is by no means a studio product on level with L&L. That alone should excite many of you who whine about the L&L studio experience. Underground Jam is what it is, with all the grit and all the delight. So here and now I name this new convention I spoke of above. Hence forth it should be known as I-365. We should perhaps more embrace it as a new experience in magic and realize that it is just different and doesn't really try to live up to the real convention experience. I-365 does, however, seek to share magic between magicians, albeit in a still new, relatively unexplored way which will, no doubt, have a learning curve as it grows and matures into whatever it is going to become. We all can get a sense that at some point in the near future we will be conducting I-365 realtime over the internet. And we will be looking back at projects like Undergound Jam and see them as the foundation on which I-365 was built. So pull onto the highway and take a trip on I-365 on the Undergound Jam section of road. Experience the late night session... and then you get to crash in your own comfortable bed instead of one of those lumpy stiff sheeted things they have at convention hotels. Cheers, Tom |

Eric, Jay, Joe, and I had a great time making it, and some of my pet effects are being performed at magic clubs around the world. That makes me happy. I got into magic because of how it made me feel. There are too many people today who got into magic because they bought and Invisible Deck and pretended to be David Blaine. Then when they see others that are different from their paradigm, they get cranky. Hopefully there's more people like you on the planet than the others. |

Jeff Stone is a giving and caring person. On this forum, I once asked him for help on an effect that he had much experience performing and he was so very gracious in offering advice, tips, and guidance (and I had no prior relationship with him of any kind, other than being a fellow magician with a sincere interest to learn). He is a gem and willing to help others.
That is who Jeff Stone is...and that is what this forum is about (or should be about if we all want it to remain vibrant and alive). Thanks Jeff. I also enjoyed this DVD offering...there are some wonderful gems through out by all the performers. A.J. |

I just watched this dvd yesterday and I have to say my expectations were exceeded. I thought the dvd was full of good usable material and even a few great items. Jeff was my favorite but the other two performs had some good material as well. I actually thought Sankey had the worst material on the dvd, with the exception of T-bone which was very visual and quite nice.
My favorites were Jacked Up, Dream Vacation and Visa Card. Maybe I'm losing my mind but I seem to remember the demo video showing someone doing a version of the torn and restored magazine but I didn't see it on the dvd. Am I thinking of a different dvd? eric |

While Jeff's work is awesome, I have to say I'm completely surprised that more people aren't talking about Eric's "Razor To Matchbook", "Shy Guys", "Straight From The Heart" and "I.L.U.S. System" These are all fantastic!

Jeff and Eric have very different styles. I think they are both terrific performers, though. I was just saying that Eric's stuff is really good too.

Title: Underground Jam: Jay Sankey and pals
Medium: DVD Arena: close up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies This is an interesting DVD as it may be using the Jay Sankey name and he was behind it you have four magicians sharing equal time. Along with Jay you have Eric Leclerc, Jeff Stone, and Joe Diamond (the third Diamond I’ve seen in magic yet I’ve never heard of or met one not in magic). The DVD is your typical poor production quality one comes to expect from Sankey. The image and sound is fine for what it is and could have been a lot worse, also could have been better. It works though and considering it was shot in a hotel room and hotel hallway what can one expect? The DVD opens with quick performances by the four magi in question and, to be honest, it is perfect. Perfect because the idea behind the DVD seems to be what you would expect during a jam session at a convention, and that it is perfectly representing. So you get some hurried and often mediocre performances but hey, 80% of the good magicians are presenting magic at the same level, more most likely. When it comes to presentation Jay and Eric outshine the other two, Jeff does okay on most of his, young Joe is rather hyper. Keep in mind that if you go to conventions most of what you’ll see is about the same quality or less. I know I hate performing for magicians so you wouldn’t see me at all, then again I’m a horrible magician. The material, for the most part, is actually pretty darn good, this is the kind of magic that your average good magician would be doing. The instructional part of the DVD is about the same as the performing part but I would put Jeff equal to Jay and Eric when it comes to instruction. Joe needs to calm down a bit and slow down a bit. He does well enough. There is nothing really ground breaking here just solid material that most people will find useful and I suggest you do as you should be doing and make it so it fits your personality or performing character. I was actually surprised, being that I’m not a big Sankey fan, how much I would like the material. This has cards, coins, bottle caps, mentalism, all types of fun stuff. I want to say something here about one of the routines and that is Eric Leclercs Razor Burn, a routine where a bic style razor turns into a book of matches. When I first saw Eric mention this with great pride I couldn’t see the performing value in it and gave it no mind. When I saw it he fooled the heck out of me and I didn’t catch on what was happening until the instruction part. It looks fantastic, a really cool little trick one on eye. Here is the problem and one encountered in magic, he came up with a great idea with no real application in performance. As entertainment the way presented it just doesn’t sell because it doesn’t fit in anywhere, which is too bad. Then I started thinking about it because it looked so darn good. I scripted out a piece where I ask the audience if they ever have seen the old trick where folks swallow razor blades, at least a few have seen it on TV as it is pretty popular. I then have justification for bringing out the razor and comment that it is too big to swallow, turn it into a matchbook which I switch out and use the matches for something. I’ve not used it yet but I think it will work out and now I can make use of Erics great idea. Over all this is a solid piece of work and you’ll find some material that is usable and I doubt any close up guy can watch this and not find something they’ll want to use. I do wish the production level was better but I don’t see that happening soon for Jay. For those of you who think Jay Sankey is the alpha and the omega do keep in mind this is a group effort and if all you care about is Sankey then you may not be happy. Nice job on this one as far as the material goes. |

Just to add a bit to the discussion, here are my top-picks for the performer:
Jay Sankey: Uniquely - A signed coin and torn corner transposition. Super easy, super unexplicable. I actually liked this one more than T-Bone. Eric Leclerc: Razor Burn - A bic razor turns into a matchbook. Ok, sorry, but even if I have absolutely no idea how to get this into my routine, this one is so over the top that I'll use it anyway. No sleeves, no manipulation..too good to be true Jeff Stone: Dream Vacation - A coin in the hand audibly appear in a film case. This one I don't really like it for the actual routine. It's nice but not something that fits me. On the other hand, the sleigths he presents can EASILY be used in other routines. His take on the "grab my wrist" steal is brillant and I may use this way more and more now. Joe Diamond: Card under watch - A signed card appear under the watch. So, a card appear under the magician's watch....nothing amazing right? Not in my opinion. This routine is so well lined up that the spectators will swear the magician haven't touched the cards until they are in the box. It's also true that every movement is justified and implicitly add to the subtleties. My magic teacher said to me that if I buy a DVD/Book and only one effect gets into my repertoire, it is worth it. For 25$, if 8 effects are going into my "to-do" list, it's a goldmine. |
