If I am not mistaken, it is not only illegal to dye an animal in South Carolina, it is also illegal to bring a dyed animal into the state ... which means technically, if you are using colored doves, your act is not legal in South Carolina. How well that is enforced, I don't know. -JoeJoe

While some people might need the colored doves to keep track of how many birds you have produced, others will be wondering, "What the @&$% did he do to those poor birds?" And while they're wondering why you did it, and how you did it, they're not thinking about your magic. Seriously, in my opinion they're nothing but a distraction. (But I'm not going to pass a law about it, so no worries.)

Honestly, I've always had mixed feelings about the coloring of doves. I found it cool and novel, but I didn't know how people would react to it. Here's a little story to share, and I can't help comparing it to a very similar Greg Frewin story.
I perform with masks, as some of my friends here know, and I was working on a new mask to wear. So there I was, outside my house, spray painting a mask when my neighbor walked by. She said, "Ohh, designing a mask, eh? Nice choice of red...Isn't that the same thing you used for the dove?" I was completely taken aback. I thought Greg Frewin was joking when someone thought he spray painted his doves, but when my neighbor said that...it got me thinking. I've stopped coloring my doves and, honestly, even though it looks really nice, I've chosen to stick to the natural white... My little opinion... |

I've had colored doves for several years after getting the color from Andy Amyx. He sells the best coloring in my opinion. I get comments every show about how beautiful the birds look, and almost never get a negative comment. The children at my shows are fascinated, and it helps reinforce that each has its own name and personality. All white birds tend to get lumped together in the audience's mind.
That said, if you don't want to color your birds, then don't. Just like if you choose not to color your own hair. It's up to the individual and your own creativity and look. All I can say is that it has made a huge improvement in my show, and I will continue to color for years to come!

Nope! VERY hard to do. Try it if you wish it will be a big mess.

100% agree with Andy on this one. I have tried that before and at first it looks just "ok", but then once the dove begins to bathe, your colors will mix causing and akward looking mixture of colors, and a complete mess. I used a different color scheme, and it lasted a whole 3 days until the colors started to mix again. Don't forget, when the doves preen, they use their heads to grab the tails to pick and clean. Any different colors you have on the doves feathers will become mixed with whatever is on their head - hence, a big mess.

Yes big mess, does not work. I too tried this for fire to dove effects but gave up... now I produce an orange bird from the fire cage, and a yellow bird for flashpaper to dove. Its not what I had it mind, but its as close as I can get...

When I had doves I just colored them under the wings It looked real good when they would fly around the audience or just flapped them

How stable is the color. Does it rub off on anything after it is dry?

Yes! Blue will rub off on your hands pretty bad. It seems that all the darker colors do. Yellow is fine. Weird I know. Also if you color one dove blue, red, orange, or green and keep them in the same cage as the other non colored doves it will rub off on them a bit.

Sometimes it's magic, often it is not. Between Gen and Ray, and the common visitor's from out of town and locally, there are great stories about past and present magic. Anyway, Gen still insists on telling no-one. Several local dove workers have guessed that he doesn't do anything anything special. I suspect that when he feels his life is winding down (not for a while I just saw a show with him and he did pretty well with it, entertaining everyone in not ideal conditions) he'll pass it on, put that's probably years away. He hasn't told even life long friends like Ray. The colors are bright, and the birds are long lived so they and they don't seem to mind, but I can't talk to doves. Another note, I've handled a few of Gen's birds, and watched him load them into dove bags, and none of the colors rubbed off on his or my hands, and the dove bags were unstained.

Marty, I wouldn't hold my breath for Gen to tell anyone how he colors his birds. I seriously think he'll keep it to himself forever. I do know that there are reasons other than just the method for his silence on the subject but that's all I'll say about it in this forum.

Would permanent hair dye work? It wouldn't rub off and there are probably non-toxic hair dyes.
