I've searched around a bit, but I can't seem to find any concrete info, either here, or on the wild, untamed web. I'm wondering if anyone knows exactly how sensitive the magnetic strip on credit cards and such would be to a (standard strength) PK ring.
I'm on the verge of buying one which I would wear on my left middle finger, but I happen to keep my wallet in my left pocket. I could always switch my wallet to the other pocket, but it's still something I'm interested in finding out. Would handling my credit card with my PK ringed hand doom the poor little bits on the magnetic strip, or would I basically have to molest the strip with the ring to cause damage? Any insights would be most appreciated. Cheers!

I don't know what effect it would have on a credit card but I wouldn't wear the ring except when I'm performing or anticipate a possible performance opportunity. The rings are fragile and wearing it 24/7 increases the chances of breaking it. I certainly wouldn't wear it while handling anything sensitive to magnetism, like a credit card or an expensive watch.

I'm not especially worried about it breaking, I'm planning on ordering it from SuperMagnetMan, so for such a low price I don't have to be too paranoid. As I'm really just a hobbiest as this point, I'd like to wear it as much as possible so it isn't incredibly obvious that I put a ring on every time I change a penny into a dime :-p
My credit cards and cellphone are the only things that I'm worried about, and I'm tempted to just see what happens with the credit cards. Worse case scenario, I erase it and get a new one, I suppose.

Hey whats up Trestkon, I'm a hobbiest myself but I wear my pk ring for the same reason you do, so it's not obvious when doing a trick. I am left handed and wear my ring on my middle left finger, I also keep my wallet in my left back pocket and so far I havn't had any problems with using my credit cards. they seem to be still working ok........

Be carefull. I have had one credit card wiped out with my Blacks PK Ring.

There was an episode of "Myth Busters" that busted the myth of credit cards being wiped clean. They had to use an electromagnet producing 1000 Gauss before they were able to change the data. I don't think a PK ring produces that kind of magnetic field.

No, but a little magnet can canceled your card.
so yes be carefull. A friend of me had this problème, with a little magnet in his wallet for some other tricks. And his little magnet was less efficient as a PK ring. damien |

It's not about wiping the card clean, it's about corupting the data and rendering the card unusable. Any PK ring will do that to a credit card if you get it close enough, and keep it there long enough.

Sorry, it s what I mean by canceled, rendering the card unusable

Thanks for the info, guys! I'll just be slightly more careful with how I handle my cards than normal, better to be safe than sorry.

I once corrupted the key card they give you on a cruise ship for charges and getting into your stateroom. This was caused by a magnetic locking flipper coin. They were in the same pocket for a short time.

I wiped out a credit card with a small magnet. I wouldn't feel comfortable having the ring in contact with the cards. You also have to be careful if you wear the ring all the time - cheap silverware at restaurants will unexpectedly stick to your hand.

I brought this matter up last year and was told to shut up, and go away. It is good to know that someone else understands the inevitable electro magnetic effect that a perminent magnet has on a magnetic strip card, compass, or wrist watch. I am an electrical engineer, but what do I know.

I was wrong in my previous statement; some PK rings can produce 1000 Gauss. I was convinced by myth busters that my cards were safe, so I am very glad I visited this forum.

I'll have to hunt down that episode of Mythbusters. Thanks guys!

I wear my ring 24/7 and I have never damaged my credit card.
It's not that it can't, but it would take some effort. You would have to rub it back and forth, for some time, to rearrange the magnetic particles on the card. Credit cards are pretty tough. They need to be. As far as hotel keys and other cards like that, they are not. They need to be reprogramed, so usually the particles are not as "fixed". Randi |

A related side note: carrying your cell phone in the same pocket as your hotel key card will render the card inoperable. Happen to me once.

In Denmark we use credit cards with a chip on it, AND a magnet stripe. Do anyone know if the chip is a affected by magnets ?

If it's a an IT-chip, then no. It's not affected.
Electronics today are pretty tough. We don't use vacuum tubes any more. Randi |

I have a chip in one of my ID cards, and my ring has had no deleterious effect on it to date.
