I've been looking to add either Chris Kenner's 3 Fly (which I have) or Bob Kohler's 3 Fly (which I don't have) to my trade show act.
Which is better or is there no difference. I think the effects are essentially the same, but one is something like $300. Is Kohler's even available? Thanks! Josh London |

Gary Kurtz' version is great, and fun to do. It's in his book and on one of his videos.

Josh Michael Rubinstein does a great version where you end totally clean. Check it out. I have said where you can find it on a post called retro fly.

The routine Kenner published is non-gaffed and much more difficult that one Bob Kohler offered.
Also the Kohler U3F manages the last coin without a sleight that has to be done both well and convincingly under fire. If you want to explore ideas, there is something in the September issue of Genii you might find of use.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

K. Harbottle's Another Flipping Three Fly is not easy, but well worth the practice if you want an ungaffed three fly that looks as magical as a gaffed version.

I agree that it looks very good, but it's different in that the coins travel rather slowly as compared to most other versions, where the coins travel very quickly. Quote:

I know you were looking for which one is better, but I think if you are interested in 3 fly routines, you might want to look up a bit of history on it - where it all started; Jonathan Townsend's Flying Eagles routine which is forerunner of them all.
I wasn't able to read the sept issue of Genii so I'm not sure if the routine is pritned there, but if it is, it'll be more than worth ordering through Genii. |

Wow, I didn't know there were so many different 3 Fly's. I am looking for one that can be performed surrounded, eith with/with out gaffs and is pretty good to tie in with a company message.
Having not seen any of the above effects I cannot accuratley decide which is better. Can anyone help with this problem? Thanks! Josh London |

Personally, after looking long and hard for a '3 Fly' type effect that suited my performing style I stumbled over Geoff Latta's 'Trick with 3 Coins' From the first New York Coin Magic DVD.
It has the production of the 3 coins at the start and the vanish at the end which many of them employ, but for me the strength of it is that it is that the plot in the middle is not as linear as all the others. The Coins move back and forward between the hands more logically and it also includes a little coin flurry in it. Additionally there is no 'passing the coin visibly' section, which I really don't like. I learned a lot about using body language and focus to direct attention in this routine. I would give it my strongest recommendation. Regards, John Posted: Mar 15, 2007 4:54am ------------------------------------------- I forgot to mention that the Latta routine only uses a [ and 2 coins, but if you are looking for the ultimate gaffed set then Mark Masons 'Come Fly With Me' has to be the ultimate. One of your requirements at the beginning of this was that the routine had to be performed surrounded. In my opinion only Kainoa's routine 'Another Flipping 3 Fly' achieves this through the extensive use of EG, but it is very tricky and is more difficult with dollar sized coins. (This is also on the New York Coin Magic DVD set) At a trade show I assume that you would want to use larger coins. All the rest use finger palms and other hold outs that would be more visible from the rear. Regards, John

We must think alike McGrath, I also decided to study and learn Geoff Latta's "Trick with 3 Coins". In fact I have been working on it for about a month now. It caught my eye too and I will vouch for all the points you made about the routine. I hope to someday to perform it as well as he does.....
Where I go, so do my coins.....

Also if you play around with Kainoa's three fly you can do a lot of other things with it. His book "coins on edge" will teach you the edge flip steal. That sleight is not easy but it will open the door to other possibilties. It did not take me too long to learn it with half dollars. However, I use dollars. It took much longer get it down with dollars.

That's why I like the Kurtz variation, because the coins travel more casually and it is part of a longer routine.

I agree, I also do not like the idea of just randomly pulling coins out and doing a three fly, then putting them back. I like to start with a production, then the three fly and, if I'm dressed right use silver dream to finish or just do a variation pendulum hanging coins.
