Hey guys...
I have been noticing that Jack's droppings have been incresingly larger, and he goes to the bathroom less. Is there anything I should do to help with the problem, or something extra I should feed him, or something? Thanks -Vinnie |

Are you feeding him "Grit"? You can give him Castor Oil, to clean him out and this may bring him back to normal. Use an eye dropper.

Yes, he has plenty grit...
By the way, what is Castor Oil? Is it like vegetable oil or something? And how much do I use? Thanks -Vinnie |

Vinnie, there's nothing wrong with Jack (Jackie). The droppings do get larger as the dove grows older. Don't worry, she won't drop a bowling ball or anything like that
Castor Oil is a very bad tasting laxative. It's very greasy and kind of like oil. It lubes the inside of the doves digestive tract and cleans them out as Wm said. As long as she's going, you shouldn't need the oil. If she stops going, then the oil should help. You can get it at any drug store and a lot of grocery stores. My mother used to give it to me when I was a little kid and had potty problems. If you could keep it down, then it worked. I think I got to the point that the mere mention of Castor oil would fix my problem. I didn't wnat any part of that stuff.

I also notice the dropping becomes larger during the time when the dove is getting ready to lay an egg again. Is she due for an egg soon?

I noticed the same with mine. Since she sits on one of the eggs 99% of the time, she holds it in more. It gets bigger because she goes less.

Yeah, if it sits on the egg, the moment you take them off, in about 10 seconds mine poop, BIG. Like huge. Humongous. HUGE. I mean like a huge glob: Like an inch and a half long and about 3/4 of an inch high.

Ok, I'm back... :-|
The bottom of Jack(ie)'s cage is CLEAN! CLEAN! CLEAN! And the cage has stayed that way for about the past week. I have noticed that Jack(ie) - uh, I'll just call Jackie "Jack" . . . for short. =] - Has kind of been holding his poop in and doesn't go at all during the course of the day... It's not until about 30 seconds after I let him out of the cage that he poops, and as Mark said above, it is humongous! And he also makes a little sound when he's 'going'... It sounds like he's uncomfortable I think... There is also PLENTY grit in the cage, but I don't think Jack even goes near it. I haven't seen him eat the grit lately. What’s going on? She, yes, she this time, (LOL) has laid a total of 3 eggs so far, and ever since that first egg was laid, she's seemed very different! Please help me out guys, -Vinnie |

Vinnie, she sounds like she has a digestive problem. The longer she holds it in, the harder it will be for her to pass the droppings. It probably hurts a little and that's why you hear a noise when she does go. It's time for the Castor oil. Just a drop or so should do the trick.

Hey Dave. Thanks.
I forgot to tell you guys that recently I have taken some paper shredding that you put at the bottom of Easter baskets in one side of his cage, and he sleeps on those and rests on those like a little nest... Maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe he likes sleeping there, and doesn't want to get it all dirty with droppings? Thanks -Vinnie |

Vinnie, Egg laying is really stressful on all birds (and the first time is even harder) she will act differently while she is laying but should return to normal when she stops. May I Pm you with a few questions about "Jack"? |

Dave Scribner Assistant Manager Lake Hopatcong, NJ 4849 Posts |
It's true that after the first laying they will be stressed, but it shouldn't affect their dropping habits. Especially since she has already laid 3 eggs. By this time your bird should be well acquainted with what is going on.
I don't really think Jackie knows the difference in the type of nest material you have. Birds go when they have to and it doesn't matter what they are sitting on.

Well, from experience with my birds. They will not poop into their nest once they start sitting on it: Egg or no egg.
If she always sits in the "nest" that would be my guess as to why your bird holds it in and then poops once she goes off of the "beloved nest". |

Not necessarily true, Mark. I have to change my nests frequently because they do their droppings in there as well but my nests are small. It's mainly because the area they are in is small and they don't get the droppings outside of the nest. Especially when there is an egg in it. They don't leave the nest for hours when sitting and they'll poop whenever they need to.

Dave,
For me, they will stay on for hours and NEVER poop in the nest. |

Yeah, I guess Jack is like your doves, Mark...
The daily routine for him is take him out, he poops, flies around for about 20 minutes, and then goes into his cage ON HIS OWN, and lays and goes to sleep on the nest... I can keep the cage door open (and it is open right now, with him laying int he nest) all day, after he gets out to stretch and poop, and he wont come out on his own until he has to stretch and poop again.. LOL Before I put the nest in, he would stay out all night and just find some place to sleep, like on top of the TV, on on the (off) air conditioner... I guess he just really loves that nest! :-D And Quiz, sure, go ahead and PM me! =] -Vinnie |
