I was wondering how many of you magicians perform any Ramsay effects?? Not altered, not changed, not remastered ,not adjusted to fit your style, not anything, just as they are in the Galloway books or Farelli pamphlets or Galloway DVDs or tapes.
Thanks in advance, BIll G. Virginia, USA |

You'll be hearing from Jonathan Townsend (Ol' JT) on this for sure. He's a Ramsay man through and through, and will no doubt provide you with a lot of good info and discussion on this amazing man and his gifts to magic. -MB

I don't know of anyone except Andrew Galloway that performs Ramsay material without any major adjustments. However, I know at least three people in this area of the country who do the coins and cylinder pretty much as it is described. However they use silver dollars instead of English coins and have some small variations on a couple of the sleights.

Beginning to wonder who here has read the Farelli and Galloway books on John Ramsay's magic?

I have read the Galloway Books. Hopefully you can rest easy now knowing that someone has.
The material in them is priceless. Definately take a look at the 10 cards to pocket routine. A very nice piece of magic for when you get tired of your coins. C |

You can't be serious Mr.Townsend. How would it be possible to be a magician with out having looked at and lived with the real stuff. It's like being a priest without having read the bible. Or calling yourself a pilot but never have been in a plane. Or a movie star but never made a movie. LOL. Just my opinion. So whats up so called magicians? don't have the sand for the real work??? Unless its self working. lol

Bill7, every time I see an umotivated transfer or an awkward effect I wonder about those things.
My best guess is that some are called and some just want to look clever in the costume.

You would really be suprised then to know that there are quite a few magicians out there that would not know a classic book or effect of magic if it hit them on top of the head. Sad but it is true. Some of the younger magicians around have no clue who Ramsay was or Vernon, Slydini etc.... Hope you don't think I am chewing you out only posting to bring up a sad fact. |

Very very very sad. I cant even imagine magic without the classics it seems impossible. LIke building a house without a foundation. I don't think it can be any clearer. hahah. HEy spydur its eight (8) cards.

Yeah, perhaps...But in the end the order of things working out, seem to find their way, and be just as good, only different. No one ever wants to leave what they have known to be the truth or the way or the principle, etc. But in fact, there are many ways, hence individuality...It's given to all, though all may not use it as expressively in their experiences here. Personally, I have seen youngsters who probably never heard of some of the greats, do things that the greats themselves would marvel over. A lot of the so-called/established pros/experts, know themselves that there are guys that don't know half of what they know or have done, that have chops they might not ever have...They've seen it, even if they don't mention it... But there is something to say for what the established greats brought to the table in all this, and real respect should be in order, as well as the deeper understandings of things. But sometimes things/people are just naturals at things...Everyone doesn't get to go to the Lee Strasberg School of Acting, and everyone that went there don't win Oscars either. So, there's room for everyone, as true creativity/ability/talent/intellectual prowess/etc., can come from anywhere, and actually always does. -MB

DO it spydur. PIck it up. I would love to see it as it is in the books. I have been trying to get some of the stuff down. But I have found trying to practice the timing and mis direction with out a spectator doesn't feel right. that's the whole thing. It feels like some of the tricks do not work unless there is somone around to misdirect. again just my opionion. So anyone wher are you guys at.

I am at questioning to you what exactly is the purpose of blindly copying someone else's routine without modifying anything at all. What for? To perform it to your magician buddies? For your lay audience (you do perform do you?) Do you want to be as good as Ramsay? Do you want to be his clone? Do you want to be a historian? Do you want to prevent yourself to come up with something that might be a better fit for yourself?
What for??? It may be a little more interesting to study between the lines. To study the thinking of Ramsay and adapt that to something of yourself. As with Vernon...as with Slydidni...as with Wonder...as with... Just a suggestion.

Blindly. Who wouldnt want to be as good as Ramsay?? The idea of doing it exactly as it is written would be to get in the head of the perfomer. Inmy opinion. The reason for asking if you do it as it is written, is because I have found people will take out a lot of the pieces that make up the picture. And in making adjustments the result is the piece turns out to be something totally different. As for you r questions. I don't have "magician buddies". Of course I would do these for lay audiences. Who else???? that's the point isn't it?? As for being his clone. I don't think anyone could even get close to ramsay. The idea is to emulate the people you look up to. Yes and tryto be them. Sure why not. use it as a learning tool. Until you find your own voice. I could go on and on and on. So iam guessing you have made adjustments. Scared to do them as written? I would love to hear your excuses. But try no toi use iam not Ramsay. Its to obvious.

I'm hardly the stocky greengrocer with an eye for fooling magicians at conventions. But I also recognize the reputation Ramsay had for some things Ramsay did which I want to do as well.
And so I went to the library and read. And tried. And wondered. And explored. It's really not so much the specific "what" but a challenge to find the "why". You get to be the "who" and pick your own "where" and "when". * note are some more thoughts on this in that article in the September issue of Genii.

Studying others can help me. Although I love the Goshman "Please" routine with the Salt Shaker, I am guessing I would not use it. I have used the idea of coins under as suggest by Down's and used a plenty by Mr. Goshman.
Of course there were those that came before Vernon, Kaps, Ramsey and Slydini.... 2 liberty half dollars from Harris
