There are two new DVDs from Murphy's Magic Supplies from Nicholas Byrd and James Coats:
BUBBLE GUM MAGIC Disc #1 and Disc #2. I was waiting for a long time for such a DVD with all the gum tricks because I love magic with everyday subjects! I just finished to watch both DVDs and my enthusiasm had vanished! Sorry to say this - but this set is the worst magic DVD I have ever bought/seen! Quality of the DVD: - Poor quality of filming - it's like I have filmed the whole 72 minutes with my video-camera. - The explanations are all overexposed - it's hard to see the gums in the hands of the magicians (in front of a white t-shirt!). - Why two DVDs? All 14 tricks could be on one DVD. - But I like the music of the menu on the DVD! Tricks: - I am not a pro - just an amateur but there is no one trick on the DVDs wherefore I would need an explanation. - "Hubba Bubba Huh" - you could perform it just for children (under 4 years!) Perfomers: - It really hurts to watch the two guys performing ther gum tricks in a candy-shop! - Please, watch the reactions of all the volunteers - there is really no reaction! - They tried to be funny but (okay it's my opinion again) there was no smile in my face during watching the DVDs. Summary: The DVDs could be much better with a professional filming and without the two guys. Points: 1/10

Wow...that bad huh?
Thanks for your helpful review! I hope that you at least managed to get some inspiration out of the set and make YOUR OWN effects with gum. At least then, all is not lost Take care and thanks again, you've saved me some money. Logan

Gitty, thanks for the review. I would eventually like some sort of gum trick to add to my bag of stuff. You saved me some money also.

I might be buying this.
I will chew it over.
Think not what magic can do for you, but what you can do for magic.

I wonder if you can watch these and chew gum at the same time.

I have more fun to chew a gum than to watch these DVDs.

It makes no sense to say this here, but it has to do with gum,and I need an excuse to say it,yeah, its pretty sad.

1 out of 10 might be stretching it a bit, but at least it wasn't overblown.
Thanks for the review! |

There is no redeeming value to anything on either of these DVD's
Without a doubt a complete waste of disc space. The production is awful, the camera work is dreadful, the effects are useless and the performances are incompetent. I thought there might be at least some good ideas but no such luck. A prime candidate for the absolute worst of the year. Woody

I agree with the shortcomings of the production value. The white balance is so bad as to make it nearly impossible at times to tell what is going on. Take very mediocre tricks and add this production issue and you have a recipe for people to just turn off their DVD player and exclaim their favorite explitive. But that would be a mistake.
I agree it is no easy task, but if you are looking for tricks which involve gum, and you have not come up with your own, you could find a few hidden solid ideas on this 2 DVD set. (and a few really bad ideas) You will have to work to tell what is going on, on the DVD, but there are a few ideas worthy of experimenting with IF you truly have an interest in doing magic with gum. I'm not... and I find it questionable to be putting gum in and out of your mouth while performing anything, but that is nothing more than my personal prefference. Yet it is something you should consider for yourself. Given the packaging it appears this was targeted toward a young audience, but that audience would not put up with the production problems. This makes it hard to suggest this DVD to anyone other than a person who is capable of working through the production issues to find a few tricks out of 14 which might be of worth to them on their journey. These disks should have been edited and condensed down to one disc for $19.95 instead of two discs for $20 each. |

I'm not disappointed by these at all. I think the criticisms are accurate with some of the lighting and lack of closeups...at least several of the ideas on each I thought were really great though. It especially helped me think of other applications too.

I would have to agree, production is low, which Byrd and Coates state in the DVD, but most of the tricks are clever and well thought out. Overall the set is very usable.
I give the Bubble Gum Magic DVD set a total of 6 to 7 out of 10 for content. |
