Greetings,
I've only been performing magic and illusions for a short time now. Needless to say, it has become a passion. I’ve got an affinity for tricks and illusions in the “Bizarre” or “Dark” vein. Although I consider the experience I had recently my "becoming" if you will since I was actually called a “Magician” for the first time. I went out on a date with a very attractive woman,I took her to a trendy up-scale sky lounge bar which over looks the city. The bar is made up of sofa esque booths in which you take your shoes off and basically lay down somewhat and chill.(You get the picture). The atmosphere is very intimate and the lighting happens to be dim and perfect for performing.I decided that I'd try out some magic tricks on her and see what kind of reactions I'd get out of her. It also gave me a chance to work on my showmanship. Firstly I started out using a marked deck of Bicycle cards, performing basic mental predictions as to what her card was. I did this a few times to have her think I was psychic! Although she was a little spooked, she must have realized that something was up. So I got right down to it and tried Stigmata. This went down very well, especially since I used a lighter to illuminate the number "8" which was now forming perfectly! I built it up perfectly if I don’t I don’t say so myself. I continued with the “mysterious persona” I had now created. This got a fantastic reaction. She had a look of total disbelief and she almost looked scared! So I played on this by keeping a total straight face and remaining nonchalant, almost like I had no regard for her amazement, like it happens all the time! Whilst standing up I then excused myself to the toilet, but before I did, I slowly performed Gary Koznitzky's Cigarette up the nose routine. This REALLY stumped her, especially after I lifted both sleeves of my jacket to show that it wasn't up either of them! She was coming out with "But I saw it go up your nose!", “How?” you could literarily hear the Hamster running on its wheel inside her head, trying to figure it out. This lead to her hands all over me, trying to feel for the Cigarette (which she didn't find of course!). This was actually the second time I'd performed this trick for her. Which meant that this time she was really "burning" me (excuse the pun). I'd performed it a few days earlier in another club. Only difference was, I was wearing a shirt and not a Blazer. This only added to the punch of the effect, since she didn't find the Cigarette then either. After I returned from the bathroom and sat down next to her, I said "watch". Getting on all fours, I went into Dis-jointed. After going practically 360 degrees (I'm naturally very flexible) I waited in anticipation for her reaction, I got it when she heard the "CRUNCH" of the bone break Getting a huge gasp and watching her put her hands over her mouth as I quickly "popped the elbow back into place", I acted like I was in mild pain. Ah! The showmanship! Needless to say she was spooked. She began asking me "What are you?" totally thinking that I was a performer of “Black magic” or “Voodoo”, at this point I had her believing I was some kind of Warlock ! I just played on it without saying a word. I put a lid on the tricks for the rest of the night in the bar and continued having a great time, until we left the venue to return back to my place. Once we arrived at my place, she excused herself to go to the bathroom. I quickly capitalized on the situation and used the opportunity to prepare for the Card through window trick. As she came back, I said pick a card, she chose one, looked at it and then returned it to the deck. I then said follow me and led her into my kitchen. With the lights out, I threw the deck of cards against the kitchen window above the sink. I quickly turned on the lights. I remained by the door the whole time. At first she didn't notice the card in the window; she simply saw all the cards splattered on the floor and in the sink. She slowly walked over the sink and said "So? What am I suppose to be looking for?” In a very nonchalant manner I pointed to the window. When she saw the card, she let out a terrified gasp and backed away (or should I say jumped back with fright). She stood there in utter silence with tears slowly coming out, with a complete bunny in the headlights look. Totally mystified, trying to figure it all out! Her only logical reason was that the apartment was haunted! I loved it! I was dying to laugh, but I just stood there with my best David Blaine straight face! After that she was convinced that I was a "real" magician and that magic was real. It was such an exhilarating experience for both of us and I'm totally hooked on it! Especially after that reaction! After that she wouldn’t leave my side, even when I wanted to pop out quickly for a pack of cigarettes (After the entire apartment is haunted!). That’s a night I won’t be forgetting in a hurry. Does anybody else have any stories that have changed people’s opinions and perceptions? Also what other tricks and illusions can people recommend which fall into this sort of category which generate utter mystification and fear? I’m looking into getting Alexandre’s “The Black School” next, Mentalism needs to be tried! |

Arcana,
Just a friendly word of advice, try not to run your date off. The last thing anyone needs is to run your woman off. May leave you playing solitare. You can overdo the magic thing and I have seen too many people do this. Sounds like you were doing one trick after the other. Also please don't do it on a first date whatever you do. It can come back to haunt you. But its your life. Scare a friend not your date. She should be the center of attention not you. Anyway since you asked about other things. I just came in here looking for a good Halloween effect and got sucked in. I am a newbie to the genre also. If you really want someone to think your into Voodoo or the like, I can suggest two books you need to pick up pronto. Baba's Vo Du Ma Gick and the Curator's Capricornian Tales. Both have opened up my mind on how I view magic. See Baba's link below for some wonderful props too. I purchased a Bawon Cross and Catholic Litho bottle to go along with some stuff I am adapting and I must say they are amazing. There are several great Dark/Bizarre dealers/performers on this site if you decide to go this route and I have bought from nearly all of them. Haven't had a bad experience yet. Some of the effects may cost you a tad bit more than a regular dealer item but they take you into a whole new level. I know most items are handmade and take some time to build but they are well worth it. These guys don't put out junk. Personally, I can suggest you look into items and/or books from: Blackhart http://www.blackhart.co.uk/ Baba Gede Nibo: http://vo-du-magick.phrets.com/ Magicurios & House of Darkness http://www.magicurios.com/ModShop/ShowCategory/ Lebanon Circle http://www.lebanoncircle.co.uk/Home_Page.htm Michael Fraughton http://www.bizarremagic.com/ The Curator: Capricornian Tales link http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/fin......m=BK8341 Hauntiques link http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/fin......m=BK6460 Haven't tried these guys yet but haven't heard any bad reviews Higley's Dark Museum http://grindshow.com/GrindShow/Dark_Museum__2.html Outlaw effects http://www.outlaw-effects.com/outlaw/ Be prepared for enormous amounts of cash mysteriously leaving your wallet or it has mine so far anyway. Now that you have a start, explore the wonderful world. Be prepared for wonderful stories and look beyond the routines in print. Make them your own. I am sure everyone here will point you in a good direction if they wish. AT |

So, this is your idea of a date... Humm.
I am sure that a lot of people won't agree with me on this, but I think that it was a bit too much. To me creating an aura, is more about at one point, looking as impromptu as possible, do one or two effects. Leave them wondering and wanting for more. You were not hired to do a show here. Also, it strikes me that in the mood of your evening you were only trying to set-up things for a new trick. My question is did you go on a date or on a test trial of your newly acquired abilities ? It is not because you are successfull with the effects that you must go on and on... Have you ever politly wished that a guy telling jokes after jokes would stop so you can socialize all together ? Also, I don't think it is cool to lether think that you have power or that the place is haunted. Keeping a straight face is something, locking the door for other explanation than the paranormal is another thing. I don't think it is something to do lightly. Some great Mage here could pull this off, but after years of studies of both magic and psycholgy. One last note, what's the deal with the cigarette in the nose ! Anyway, you were having a blast so that evening was not entirely lost...

AltanThrash: Cheers for the input mate, I'll look into them now.
Ben G: Generally, I only perform one trick when I’m out and that’s the Cigarette up the snout routine. Mainly because at one point it was the only trick I knew! I whole heartedly agree on your concept of taking things too far and going over the top. I should clarify that she was pushing me to keep performing, as she was ultimately enjoying the whole experience. If I got the slightest indication that she was getting bored or over stimulated, I would stop. This is the first time I've done something like this on a "date" though, I’ll admit. The theme of the evening though was to just kick back and enjoy some Cocktails whilst having fun. It wasn't a conventional "getting to know each other" night if you catch my drift Otherwise the tricks would have been left at home. |

Sheesh, if you are taking a hot date out and going to perform bizarre magick rituals, at least convince her she has to get naked and lie on an altar so you can paint parts of her body in mystic sigils (use chocolate tho) and you are going to induce a mystic state of ecstacy in her.
Ok, maybe the second date.

I don't think this is bizarre... where's the emotional content?
maybe if the effect was combined with a short but emotionally appealing story would do... not just purely shock and fear... |

My ex boyfriend from years ago was a mentalist, that's how I got started in all of this, and he had me going for a good while with his "abilities". I was very impressed and loved the fresh approach. You CAN go too far though so be careful, it's cool to have her wanting or being curious for more. Alexandre's black school is a great book with some interesting ideas, some of which came from a couple of my previous ebooks so I'm kind of biassed, but I say check it out anyway. With Banachek and Ted Lesley quotes in the back I don't think you can go wrong. In the black school you'll also find effects with tarot cards that play great on dates.

For now I offer some feedback from an couple shows I did the past year or so.....
--------------------------------------------------------------- this is not an attempt at ego boost, for Baba knows the ego is a deathtrap..literally... but I just wanted to share briefly some feedback ive received from the last few shows ive done in schools, and detention centers for juvieniles. I want to show the magic of magic, the "reward" that comes from beyond the depths of wanting to know one self. so here we are, and feel free to share any good vibes youve recieved from your work as well. thanx for reading. --------------------------------- "Baba's voodoo presentation had a powerful impact on me. I liked learning about his culutre and seeing the relics he brought in. He had an old voodoo doll, made from corn husk, or straw...we all saw it rise from his hand and stand straight up! this was amazing to me, and I will never forget that or any of his magic..." (see what a little Okito in your life can do?? LOL) "I really enjoyed when Baba gave us demonstrations of voudou, and talked about the beliefs and ritual. His magic was incredible and mind boggling, and really opened up my mind to the possiblity of "mind over matter"...." "The one thing that I will take with me forever is when Baba came in as guest speaker. He really helped open my mind to vodou and the power of meditation. He hypnotised me, and I felt like I was in another world....he taught us all that if we really set our minds to something, we can do anything. I was surprised that our school let him come in and talk about this stuff, but I am glad they did..I see things differently now." "Baba told me to write down a name of a close relative who passed on and burn it. I did that and he sat me down and put me under a trance...I felt light and like I was floating as I heard him talk to me...He asked me if the name started with B and I nodded...I began to sweat, and he told me to go deeper into trance, and to relax...after a few moments, Baba said that it was a woman and her name was Beverly and said she was a short lady who was my grandmother...I nodded my head...I could hear my friends gaspings and then he brought me out. My friends knew my grandmother, and knew how close we were. This was the most awesome thing I ever experienced. I want Baba to come to my house and show my Mom, becuase she doesn't believe me." "I was so glad to see the vodou presentation. I forgot his name but, the speaker made me feel like I need to go deeper inside my self. Ive always felt that way, but he really enforced it. I was lucky to learn and witness something like that. He told me to write down a 3 digit number and then subtact it from itself..and then he told us what the number was, without loking at the paper...it was the real thing, it had to be. (Banachek et al would be proud) "Baba Gede came in and mystified us with voodoo magic. I never thought any of this was possible. TYhe guy on tv (Blaine) is doing tricks with cameras and stuff. Baba did all this right in front of us, and its real! All we need to do is study about our selves, and with the right training the mind can do much more than it could ever imagine. I am thankful for Baba Gede coming and I hope he comes again." ------------------------------------ |
