Hello, I want to begin dice stacking, and I need a dice stacking cup. Currently, I am using a few gold dice that came with a yahtzee set, but I'm not sure what to use for a cup. If anybody owns the deluxe version of yahtzee can you tell me if the cup is reasonable for dice stacking? It is four dice high and is lined with felt. The problem is it has thick walls. And if this doesn't work, where can I find a reasonably priced dice-stacking cup, because if I realize I want to focus on something different, I don't want to realize that I wasted $100 on a cup I'll never use. Also, I went to Fantasma and asked for dice stacking cups and they told me that the only ones they had were horrible and would break almost immediately (Great Service!), so make sure you have tried the cup before suggesting it. And currently, I can get the die in the cup 25% of the time, with a paragraph-long guide I found on the internet, so if there is any source for dice stacking, list it here. Thanks.

The dice are really crucial for this. You really should be learning with casino dice. I suspect that your Yahtzee dice have rounded edges. An expert can stack these, but it's easier to stack the really sharp-edged casino dice. An expert can also stack dice with a straight walled glass tumbler, but I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. Get the right stuff.

Jim Zee wrote a book and did a video on dice stacking. He claims he can teach anyone how to do it perfectly in 20 minutes. His web site is http://www.jimzeemagic.com/

Also, check http://www.theambitiouscard.com for dice cups and the proper dice.

Hey David O,

Check out this link also. Todd Strong has the books, DVD's, dice and cups available. As Bill P. emphasizes it's the dice that are crucial when first learning this cool skill. Just suggesting another good source for the materials however don't forget the legendary Jim Zachary's "Art of Dice Stacking" video, too.

I found a rather inexpensive source for stacking cups. If you can find a "Texas Hold-em" Yahtzee set, it comes with six sets of dice (crap dice) and six straight sided cups. I can stack four full size Casino dice quite easily in them, or five if I buy the next size smaller from some place like http://www.gamblersgeneralstore.com

I hosted a small stacking session at an IBM convention a couple of years ago and gave away the extra cups to the participants.

Are the cheap cups here: http://www.toddstrong.com/page7.htm any good? I would buy something of great quality, but dice stacking is a hard skill and I want to make sure I won't give up and waste the money I spent on the cups. And is Jim's Book any good? IT is 20 dollars cheaper than the DVD, and I'm on a budget. I know I get what I pay for, but I'm not ready to invest in something I don't know if I will use.

Also, is the Todd Strong DVD any good? I know the Jim one is the best, but there is a package that comes with the DVD.

The Todd Strong DVD is excellent. I have both, and for really "getting it" Todd's was best.

Too bad you're not in Las Vegas (you aren't are you?). I could have you stacking in ten minutes.

Nah, I'm not (though I wish I was) I heard young magicians are treated like kings there.

And thanks for the help. I bought a plastic set with dice and the DVD with Todd Strong.

Perfect... Let me know how it goes.

BTW, as Pete said, search YouTube for Dice Stacking. There's a lot of good stuff there. There's even one on there from yours truly.

I bought a cup from Frank at http://www.theambitiouscard.com. He makes one from the cheap plastic cups and covers it with leather on the outside. It stacks like a dream and looks great. I now use this one all the time. I have ordered a second one from him as a back up.

I received the set in the mail today, watched the video and started. This is actually fun to practice! And which method of stacking dice does everybody use? I find keeping the lip on the table easier, but in the air it seems more impressive. Now I need to get another pair of different colored dice in order to invent new moves. This is a field open for originality!

I keep the lip in contact with the table most of the time. If you're looking for more dice, http://www.gamblersgeneralstore.com sells "sticks" of five razor edge dice in a package for about $12 a stick. They have several sizes available from the standard Casino 3/4" all the way down to a few millimeters. You think this is fun, you should grab a fistful of minis and a film cannister! I downsized to 5/8" so I could do a "two in hand, one in pocket" style routine. With these I can now stack five dice where I only stacked four before.
