I'm curious if a lot of people perform 3-fly type of effects in walk around venues. I, personally, love to watch the effect, but I'm wondering if this is an effect lay people enjoy, or is it more of a magician's effect. I know that there are routines that we, as magicians, go crazy over, but are less than overwelming for lay people. I don't perform 3-fly type routines, but love watching them. I've been thinking of working on those types of routines, but not sure if the return will be worth the effort. I don't work for magicians and this kinda strikes me as something lay people would dismiss as "interesting, but not intriguing enough to put down my soup spoon", whereas magicians viewing this do appreciate the difficulty of the sleights and can more appreciate the structure of the routine. I could be wrong though. Any thoughts??

I use a couple of versions of 3fly in walk around. The only thing I've found is that you can't do it at every table or group. I find the angles are sometimes impossible but if you are happy to do it when possible then go for it. Good Luck.

I use Lee Asher's "3 stylin" at larger tables when the magic needs to be at chest level for all to see. It plays great!!! Poker is so hot right now and everyone is familiar with chips. Pick a good routine and give it a whirl, it is very magical to a lay audience.

I am without my proper poker chip because the plastic split aftre 1 hour of practcing with it and lies in drawer of doom now.
3 Fly doesn't play for lay people. They watch it and make the following 3 times in a row - "ahuh". They only know its over because the chips/coins are placed away. Ask any professional magician who actually works for lay people and they'll tell you. |

Attention professional magicians and or semi-pro magicians that perform any of the many versions of three fly by that or any other simular routine by any other name. Does the routine actually work for lay people? Zak said no and is the known authority on this, what do you say?

Uh, I am a professional magician and I use this all the time. It gets great reactions. Sorry you don't get the desired reactions Zak. However, there is no need to make generalizations on an effect that many people use to put food on the table. I would hazard a guess that the problem is user error, not "3 fly" error...or were you joking? Was that a sarcastic post?

I took the 3-Fly Routine from Daryl and made it into a 3-Fly-a-pizza-pie routine. Yes, its still done with coins, but you ask them to imagine the coins were-a pizza pies, and it gives motivation and interest to toss-ah the ah-pizza pies from-ah this-ah hand to ah this-ah hand, and-ah back again. (I actually call it Three-fry ah-pizza pie).
Magically yours,

I guess we better listen to what he says! Look at his site, it says he is one of the top close-up magicians in the country. I must be the only one here who has never heard of him. You would think that I would have heard of the 3 fly "expert".

I don't want to get into too much of an argument here... there seems to be some pretty strong opinions in play...
but... I use 3fly in walk around situations and it plays nicely. It plays big, it's easy to understand, and there's a lot of magic that happens in a short amount of time. That said, there are performers who don't feel comfortable using it, and that's fine, everyone has their favorites. If you are considering using this routine, you may want to research the origins of the routine. It was developed by Mr Townsend and worked on by Mr. Kenner as a table hopping coins across. |

Thanks, guys for your input. I just wasn't sure if lay people would react strongly to this effect. And thanks Zak for adding some entertainment to the thread. I've read many of your posts in the past and usually react the same way....scratching my head and contorting my face in some "what was that about???" pose. I do respect your opinion though....sort of.

In the hands coin across routines play well because of a couple reasons. First they are not cards and many people turn off to cards (thus why they usually don't make a good opener). Secondly you are using common items that are acting in an unusual way and you don't have to use the table. The three fly concept brings the coins up rather than down low, meaning a better view for the spectators. At the table you can do a traditional coin across and it usually will also work. Lee Ashers routine is pretty simular to others only it uses poker chips and as we all know poker is very popular these days and it brings in a hint of gambling, always a good hook.

I stand by my previous post about using 3 fly. I think that there is a small clip of me using 3 fly in my promo' video on my web site. It's a while since I watched it so I am not sure and I can't be ***** to check.

I think Zak is just playing around and wanted a little attention so he posted what he did. Re-read his post, it is obvious he wants to ruffle up some feathers.
Zak, what types of coin routines do you prefer for a walk around situation? |

WOW! Ya gotta love reading drama on the Café, lol (Sorry guys couldn't resist). I perform 3-Fly in my restaurant set. The version I use is Mark Mason's Come Fly with Me. It gets excellent reactions laymen. Even the skeptics in the crowd are fooled with it. Prior to doing that routine, I performed Kenner's version with great success also. 3-Fly, in general is easy to follow, plays for the bigger crowds/tables, is highly visual, and highly entertaining, given the right presentation. I think the majority rules here...3-Fly does work for laymen.

I wasn't to sure about the reactions either until I performed a modified version of Three stylin using different colored poker chips. It also seems easier for the audience to follow along. I've gotten great reactions from lay persons doing it this way.
