I've decided it is time to add music to my act. I know nothing about putting together music and sound effects, so I've been reading previous threads. Most seem to assume one knows more than I know. I would appreciate answers to a couple of questions:
1. Free editing software recommended seems to be "Audacity", but it is acknowledged that better/easier to use software exists for a price. What is the better software? 2. Is there a resource that teaches one how to edit together music and sound effects? How to set up a sound system and trigger the music/effects during a show? Between these issues and equipment, it seems overwhelming. Is there a guide other than trial and error? Thanks-- Flimnar

Filmnar,
Audacity is a decent program, considering it's free. A more advanced program would be Adobe Audition, which used to be Cool Edit Pro. It was a standard in sound editing and multi-track recording for years. Adobe bought it and added some things. In my opinion it's even easier to use, support multi-tracking, and has more than enough features! It retails for about $350. In my opinion it's worth it. It will be more than enough for you, even years down the road! As far as training goes, the manuals that come with Adobe Audition are decent, they'll teach you the basics, but if you do a search, on Ebay, for example, you'll find dozens of training manuals, and even DVDs that teach you with on-screen examples how to edit sound clips. Advanced programs often have a higher learning curve, which means it takes you longer to learn the software initially, but of course, the advanced features allow for growth! As far as triggering sound effects, I run my show from an Ipod. I know it's not ideal, there are other systems magicians use, but the Ipod packs small (I have a nano) it can be controlled through a wireless remote, and it's easy to use. Good luck with it all, it can be overwhelming, but it's worth it! -Kevin |

Flimnar, I thought it was just me. I also have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 for editing my shows. The problem is I do not understand how to use it. I did not understand Adobe Photoshop 7 at first either. I learned more of the Adobe by getting a software that explains how to work it. I'm using someone else to edit my videos until I can understand. So my advice is if you cannot understand what the software explains, try and search for a software that teaches. If no luck, save money and time by having someone else do it for you.

Magicians often try to do everything, edit their music, design their lighting, write their scripts, design their costumes, plan the show, pick the music...the list goes on. The fact is we're not experts in everything and sometime the most effective way to get the best results is to hire someone who knows what their doing! As has been posted on the Café before, one of the best resources we have is local colleges and universities. Students will work for free or very little, but are geniuses, especially when it comes to the newer technology and software! Even if you have to end up paying full price, it may be well worth it! Good luck! |

Blaze Audio Rip/Edit/Burn not free but very affordable, if you have rip/burn programs just get the Edit portion, cheaper yet.

Flimnar, another idea is to ask experts for help in a music editing forum. Here is one: http://www.fiql.com/forum/threads/anyone_like_to_edit_music

Is there anyone in the magic community who would consider editing music for a fee? It would certainly be a service that those of us who are not very 'technically inclined' would be willing to pay for.

MP3 Direct Cut
A free editor that lets you edit your MP3 files without having to decompress them first. It even allows you to adjust the level of the file if it was recorded at too low a level. It is small and fast. http://www.mpesch3.de1.cc |

My full time job is Creative Services Director for 3 radio stations, I edit music, sound effects and voice over 8 hours or more a day. I use Adobe Audition 1.5, also ACID. I also own a mobile DJ service and have been doing magic off and on for about 15 plus years. If you have questions or need something let me know.

I've had a lot of people recommend Sony's Sound Forge. Runs about $70 and seems to do a lot stuff.

If you step up and buy the right computer for creative efforts (that is, an Apple) you'll find a great piece of software called Garageband included. It's the baby brother of Soundtrack, the professional sound editing software I use, but it has plenty of functionality for most people. In fact, more than once I have done lighter sound editing (stuff without massive corrections needed) on the Garageband on the family iMac (the older bubble sprouting a flatscreen monitor version) in one room while the pro-level machine was rendering special effects or capturing video in the office. In addition, you'll get iMovie and iDVD to edit and author video with right there out of the box.
And about the whole editing uncompressed MP3s... when that goes wrong, it goes crazy wrong!

Magic is a lie. It is our job to convince the audience to overlook the lie and our goal to make them embrace it. |
