How long do everybody practice their manipulative acts. Im only wondering, because their are so many talented magicians who execute their manipulation acts with what looks like prefect serene grace. I personally want to here how long other people practice their acts before I share how long I practice. Thank you!

Austini,
I do finger exercises and roll a ball for at least 15 minutes/day. Sometimes I even spend 1-2 hours doing this (those are days I am on the road). When I just learned to roll a ball, I took a trip to CO. I rolled a ball all the way down and all the way back. Since I travel a lot for shows, I usually practice on the road. When I was learning Mahka Tendo's card rollout, I was practicing it for about 1/2 hour / day (sometimes even an hour). When I was learning a 5 coin Down's star, I was practicing it about 1 hour / day (sometimes 2). I am currently learning contact juggling and am trying to practice at least 15 minutes/day (although it is addicting and I often spend more). For me, it really depends on my schoolwork load and other responsibilities, but I definately try to carve out blocks of time for practice. Forrest Chapman |

If you work to music, you can be practicing and no one else even knows! (Use your Ipod.) Timing is everything.

I run through my act at least once a day, and then work on little things that need work. I have been doing this for about a month now.
Great improvement comes from this. Best Brandon

Time spent depends a lot on what I am practicing. I would not spend excessive amounts of time practicing certain sleights, if it meant that fatigue would diminish the quality of that practice. The time spent should at least somewhat resemble real world application.
On the other hand... if I was practicing a 10-12 minute manipulation act, I may have to be there for hours, as most of the time may be spent resetting and reloading props. In these instances, I will often spend time on some days rehearsing "air magic". I will pantomime ALL the action, with as much accuracy as I can muster. I visualize every sensation of handling the props... just without the props. In the early stages of act development, this helps block the physical action. It helps me visualize any dicrepancies, or possibly notice variations that may improve things. Later, it takes what is basically set in stone, and commits it to a second-nature set of actions. Of course, that doesn't take the place of actual practice and rehearsal with all props, etc., but it augments it, and it is always with me! Bob, I like your Ipod suggestion. I used to rehearse often with a walkman, so I could hear the music, without bothering other family members who might be doing something else. If I am practicing any speaking parts, I prefer to be alone. That way I can get very extreme, and push the envelope on character expressiveness, without having to answer the odd looks it will bring from other people nearby. LOL ~michael

Well, I've been building my act for a year and a half now, it's come a long... long way. I set the outline of the routine a year ago, and now I'm just polishing the edges... things like the looks and the exact steps. Every now and then I make a small adjustment. It's still not perfect, but I like it. How much practise I do on it depends upon what stage of the building the act I'm on. But a lot!

Well I can say I do it at least 90 minutes every day. the reason I know is that my commute to and from work is 45 minutes. And as I am driving I am doing my partcie moves with the cards etc. Now it certainly is not a full practice by any means but I felt this 90 minutes was wasted time. So I do ball rolls or tenkai a card or practice my backpalm. It gives me 90 mionutes of just getting my hands used to the moves and getting my muscles used to doing things automatically.

I can't practice a specific amount of time each day because sometimes my job cuts my evening short tremendously. Either way, I love to practice and I do every chance I get. That's all that matters, IMO. |
