Here are Fitzkee's 19 Basic Effects of magic, upon which all feats of magic/conjuring are based (as according to him, of course).

Which of these are easily applicable to our genre, and which are just over the top, and which are feasible with a little modification and thought ?
I'll post my own thoughts a bit later, right now I'm a little too busy.. :-/
Off the top though, I'd say the vast majority are no problem for us, although many of us shy away from outright levitation and production/vanishes.

# Production (Appearance, creation, multiplication)
# Vanish (Disappearance, obliteration)
# Transposition (Change in location)
# Transformation (Change in appearance. character or identity)
# Penetration (One solid through another)
# Restoration (Making the destroyed whole)
# Animation (Movement imparted to the inanimate)
# Anti-Gravity (Levitation and change in weight)
# Attraction (Mysterious adhesion)
# Sympathetic Reaction (Sympathetic response)
# Invulnerability (Injury proof)
# Physical Anomaly (Contradictions, abnormalities, freaks)
# Spectator Failure (Magicians' challenge)
# Control (Mind over the inanimate)
# Identification (Specific discovery)
# Thought Reading (Mental perception, mind reading)
# Thought Transmission (Thought projection and transference)
# Prediction (Foretelling the future)
# Extra-Sensory Perception (Unusual perception, other than mind)

I'm assuming, since this page has been up for years and many, many, magicians know about it, that you can read more of this here without running afoul of any legal issues.
If not, moderators, I ask that you only remove the below link, and not the entire post.

All of them can be used in bizarre magic.

AMHO those définitions doesn't apply to our kind of magic, they're far too restrictive.
As I've already mentionned, effects maybe lot of different things. The impression of time travel, the reality of ghosts and vampires, the possiblity of possessing supernatural powers or talents, the existence of parallel universe(s), the working of a love potion... The list should be unlimited.

That page is put up for some reason by the guy who currently owns the rights to Fitzkee's books so it shouldn't cause any trouble.

AMHO, Curator ? "Ain't My Humble Opinion ".. ? hehe Smile

Weelll.. one could argue ... Production (and even maybe Levitation( of Spirits ... you could fit it in there with a big enough shoehorn, I s'ppose.

I agree though, in spirit, the list is geared towards the "traditional" magician, and thus I thought it'd be interesting to see our acceptance or rejection of it, in full or part.

Overall, I see nothing to reject except hardcore vanishings and productions, and outright levitation - while they can be done, they do tend to push the envelope of belief.
Another one, "Penetration", such as The Ambitious Card, would be pretty hard to "bizarrify", I think, but certainly not all Penetrations would be.
(Watch it with the jokes, now .... Smile )
Or would that be "Teleportation" ? Equally challenging, no ?

I guess for me, it comes down to this: many "realistic" people really believe in spirits, ghosts, angels, demons, and ESP - anything beyond that "risks" being more traditional magic.
Just my own opinion, naturally.

Well.. I don't know if I knew the answer, but I suspected as much. Smile
I confess I haven't purchased my copy of Hauntiques yet - but I have every intention of adding it to my library. I'm so buried in work and reading now, that even if I bought it, I wouldn't get to it for a while.

BTW, that's the best presentation for AC I've ever seen ! *** nice.
But that much I did know - anything coming out of the surnateum would be.
Didn't mean it was easy to do though. Smile

Personally, I find the categorizations in The Magic Mirror (Neale and Parr) to be a lot more useful than Fitzkee's taxonomy.

Ah, yes! I agree. I must confess to not even thinking of The Magic Mirror, a wonderful, thought-provoking book.

The Quan-Tri Paradoxe is one of the routines in Compendium Sortilegionis.
The Hauntique is an A1 helmet from the Vietnam war (1967/68) era that looks pretty much like the one in "Full Metal Jacket". Everything you need for the routine is on the helmet...

I never did care for the Ambitious Card, but that presentation makes all the difference in the world. Vive le Surnateum!
