Just a note to remind dove magicians that summer brings a few projects for dove owners. The first is to make sure that more water is available. The second is that this is a good time to disinfect the cage areas and use Sevin on the doves, perches and nests. (An old sock is a great seven applicator.)

Doves need both sun and shade. Heat is not a problem as long as there is plenty of fresh moving air. A dove's body temperature is higher than a human's.

Longer days mean more cooing.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the helpful hints Bob.

I keep my doves on a covered patio. Although they will not be in direct sun, I am concerned about heat. As you are probably aware it is not unusual for us to have 110 degrees for a few months. Besides lots of water and an occasional water spray, any other thoughts??

Living in Arizona, a wet towel on the side of the cage once in a while, may be a special treat. It gets very dry. I can remember spraying the top of the ranch house as a kid there to get some relief in the hotest months. Sometimes the horses' noses would actually sunburn.

Don't be surprised if your doves still enjoy some time in the sun. It's important to their feathers.

Great advice and tips Bob. While I don't have doves yet I will soon be summerizing my bunny hutches.

By the way, that old sock dusting trick sounds like something a former rodeo clown might know. Smile

Regan,

Old rodeo clowns are lucky to have one sock at a time!

Actually, old socks never die. When you live out on a ranch, you use what you have or wait and wait and wait. It also might explain why our old trucks are so good looking. I think Lucy would pay to have ours buried! Beauty is rust deep.

Did you know that cowboys keep a sock of talc and use it the keep buckles on leather straps moving smoothly? It works!

Bob,

I did not say "old", I said "former".

I know about those old trucks. My old SUV is more-or-less a "farm" vehicle now. It's got like 220-something thousand miles on it. I have had it for a long time and my wife would like to see it buried also. She thought it gave up the ghost a few weeks ago, but to her disappointment, I revived it. It has it's share of rust also. With the winters we get around here it doesn't take too long for the road salt to take effect anyway.

Being a clown.....(mostly former clown)....I know about the old sock too. I didn't know about the use for leathers and buckles though. Now I know why my belt buckle used to work so smoothly! I may have to clown more often to solve that problem!

:)
