Which is the best rim? North or South? East or West?
How about the "Oh, Heck No" glass sidewalk or the "Bruised Coccyx" donkey rides down to the bottom? Anybody know?
I'm planning a trip there and want to get the most bang for my pesos.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.

Patrick, the last time I was there was so long ago it was only 14 feet deep. Wish I could be of help.

Patrick, not sure if this is an indicator of which side is the "best", but the South side does get more tourist. I'd highly recommend taking one of the helicopter rides over the canyon and if you have the time and really want to see the canyon I hear that the rafting trips are the ultimate canyon experience. Enjoy your trip.

Yo, Bob.
Thanks a zillion. My sister and I will probably find ourselves bouncing down the South side, thanks to you. They'll probably need the helicopters jsut to rescue us. Just kidding. Thanks for the input.

With regard to development, I am probably the most rapacious "plow that old-growth forest under and build a parking lot," pro-urban sprawl, anti-conservation, and the-heck-with-any-endangered-species-'cause-I'm-at-the-top-of-the-food-chain-contractor on the West Coast. But...I gotta go with the upset 'Native' Americans on this one:

That stinkin' "sky bridge" is just an abomination.

On it's own, I think the sky bridge is cool. They should put one over a man made canyon, by a Disney theme park. The Grand Canyon didn't need any "improvements". I'm jealous Patrick. It's one of the most awesome sights/experiences on this planet.

I have never been to the north side but the south side was great. We have been there a couple of times. Took the train from Williams once and it was fun too although the time at the canyon was short. The south side is more touristy, but it was not crowded.

We also did a raft trip thru the canyon and had a wonderful time. It was almost two weeks. My wife hates camping so she was not looking forward to it. I think she came just to make sure I got back. She thought the trip was great and would do it again.

Not sure which Native Americans you are speaking of...cause the Hualapai Tribe are the ones that financed & built it.

Patrick, glad I could help out where Josh the Superflouos had obviously dropped the ball and left you hanging. BTW when where you planning on taking this trip? Some of the more popular excursions like the rafting and donkey rides into the canyon need to be booked up to a year in advance.

We're going next week, I think. I'm pretty much a low-end day-tripper tourist (read: cheapskate). We leave early in the morning from Vegas and return late at night. I'm not willing to spend the $$$ to parachute down into it. I just want some pictures and videos of it so I can show my students.

Patrick,

I have hiked the canyon 3 times. All 3 have been down the south side. It's awesome. The neat thing with hiking is that evertime you make your way around a corner, there is a whole new astonishing vision to behold. Talk about kodak moments. Would be glad to visit more about the experiences if ya wish through here or PM. God luck and enjoy.

Hey, Kevin:

USA Today cited an anonymous tribal elder's objecting to the bridge as it showed "disrespect for the land." I conflated the anonymous opinion with the views of other 'Native' Americans from the tribe, who were reportedly ambivalent about the bridge but hopeful for its economic prospects.

Like others, I appreciate the "gee-whiz" factor in this thing, but within the context of the Grand Canyon, it's just atrocious. Kinda like a theme park on the edge of a Civil War battlefield might be...

Leno had a great CGI gag where a guy jumped up and down on the thing and it collapsed!
