Hey Guys!
I am writing to let you know that I have just launched a new website, called the 'TMW Awards'. TMW Awards are awards given to magicians, tricks and institutions in the magic industry, by fellow magicians. They are the magic worlds equivalent to The Oscars™. Nominations are made by magicians on The Magic Woods forum, and then anyone is welcome to vote on The Magic Woods Awards website (http://www.themagicawards.com). The awards cover everything from best new trick, to best magic website, and the awards are run annually in April. Check out the awards website - (http://www.themagicawards.com), where you can put your e-mail in on the voting page to be sent 1 e-mail when the voting starts and one when the winners are announced. I am really excited at this, a way of rewarding those magicians and institutions who work hard in the magic industry for their fellow magicians, and to further the art of magic. What do you guys think? P.S- The Magic Café has been nominated for best website! P.P.S- Is there another forum I can post this in, to let more people know? The more voters the better!

Seems like a lot of fun. These things rely on people taking part in the voting process.
John Cornelius told me he tried something similar in the days before the internet and it was a bit of a flop. He predicted that when technology allowed there would be a global vote. What a visionary! |

This should be great, but like Mike Doogan said, it relies on the voters! Sign up!

This looks really promising. Very impressive

Thanks for the support guys- be sure to register your interest to vote!
I think this is a really unique idea, and with the power of the world wide web can go really big. As I mentioned in another thread, we need to get as many voters as possible, over 1500 if possible, more even, so that winning the award is a worthwhile thing. Anyone have any ideas of getting people to vote and spreading the word? Maybe you could help spread the word with your website? www.TheMagicAwards.com //Edd

Site looks great Edd, I can't wait for the voting to get going. Should be a very good experience.
Are you going to contact the nominees prior to the final talley, so that maybe they can get people to know about it? Also, tell us about what happens when someone wins. Keep up the good work! |

Nice idea, but there are sooo many awards out there already, why another one. Just like TV and movies seems like there are hundreds of awards now days, it only seems to water it all down. Used to have things like the Oscar, the Toney, and the Emmy. Now there is Golden Globes, People's choice, TV Land awards, etc. In martial arts there was basically one hall of fame, the one Black Belt Magazine ran, based on reader vote every year. Unfortunately, it started to favor some popular practitioners and over look some long time very experienced parctitioners, so somebody started a new hall of fame. Now I think there are like 300 "World Hall of Fame"s in martial arts. To have an award you really need to have a reason for having it that is significant and different from other existing awards. Plus an internet vote says that you get a vote out of people who use the net, whether or not they have any real experience in magic, and how can I vote on best trick for 07 or best new trick of 07 when I haven't seen every trick or even every new trick of 07? If you are going to do it right, think through some of these things, otherwise you are getting what would be considered a very flawed and poorly designed poll. If you are going to do it in a poll format, then go do some study on program evaluation, statistics, and research methods to find out how to structure one well and present it in a way to get fairly reasonable results. Your most likely voter is going to be a bunch of teenagers (nothing against teens or teens in magic, but teenagers are the largest single population of internet users) whose magic experience is a few exposure sites, Ellusionist, and Penguin Magic. Not a vast reflection of the magic community.

Hi Vlad- The nominees will all be contacted as best as we can do to let them know they have been nominated, and we would encourage them to get people to vote for them!
Hi Photius- Thanks for your feedback! Its great to see some useful and informed advice. You are right, there are lots and lots of award ceremonies around, but none of the ones you mention are magic related..? I really feel there is a lack of a magic community driven way of rewarding those in our industry that work hard for other magicians as well as the public, and further our art, by making websites and releasing books and tricks etc. Fair enough there are lots of awards in the magic industry for magicians to gain based on their magical ability- but this isn't about that- its about magicians voting for their peers in an award they think they deserve to say thanks. You are also right that every so often someone might not of heard of a new trick, and if you haven't seen all the tricks in the category of best trick, how can you make a fair vote? I think it is possible. The tricks that are nominated will all be very well known effects, and most will know what they all are, or can easily find out. People will make a vote for different reasons, one might vote for X because they own all the nominations, and this is their favourite, some might not own any of the nominations, but vote for X because it looks the best in the demo. Why people vote for what is up to them, but I have a feeling that most magicians will vote with a common mindset and that the winners will be clear in the end. What you say about the poll method, and structuring it well, that's so true. I have a qualification in marketing, and as part of this qualification we studied quantitative research methods in depth. The poll method, when viewed from a psychoanalytical perspective is indeed flawed. However, for us, at the present time it seems it is our only option, due to funding and time. I'd love to build in features that did things like swap around the list orders randomly to each user, to avoid 'first in list' bias and other things like that, but we simply can't. I also think that because this is a poll on awards, and not market research or some other mundane task, people will take more interest in it, and make good decisions. Lastly- I'm not sure why you think that more teens, or users of Ellusionist and Penguin will vote. We haven't used their forums to talk about the awards. Do you think that this forum is populated mainly by E and P teens? Sorry about the long reply, I just wanted to give you as best answer to your questions as I could. Once again, thanks for your feedback- it is much appreciated. //Edd Withers

The e-mail signup has closed now ( I should edit that text really.. lol) but will re-open after the awards ready to go for next year. I'll post all the results here for you to see, or check out the site after the vote has closed, for the exact results (vote counts and all). I think some of the categories are hard to call, but some its more obvious who will win. //Edd

Did you find it easy to vote or hard? What I mean was, for you were the choices obvious, or did you have to think about it? //Edd

Hi there,
I had to do a little research to find out who a few of the people were, but some were obvious to me! (I am a big fan of Paul Daniels and The Magic Café - so they were obvious choices!) Hope this helps! Many thanks Magical Mark Watson (mark1991)

Good to see some of the TMW crowd outside of the woods.

I also think that because this is a Funding? Time? It only takes a few minutes to do this. Seeing as you are already using PHP and MySQL for the backend, here is how you do it: -create a database called nominees -create a pretty PHP form that pulls the list of nominees to use into that page, and lay them on the page in a random order. But here is what would be different than you are curently doing: # SELECT magiciannum, magicianname FROM nominees ORDER BY RAND() That's it! See, easy stuff. If you want exact code and syntax, you can pm me. |

Hi Teknikle-
that's a very kind offer! If you PM me the code, I'll look into getting it done for next year. The site was down this weekend because we had to make some improvements (install a captcha, and start logging IP's more effectively, plus a rules update)- but we are back up and running now! I hope it didn't cause a problem for you. If you haven't voted yet, check it out at www.TheMagicAwards.com Thanks! P.S- Some of the results so far are surprising!
