Electric cars have been around since the 1880s. Cars powered by electricity have been around since the 1800s and predate gas powered cars. A blacksmith in Vermont, Thomas Davenport, invented a rotary electric motor in 1833 and attached it to a model train a year later. In the late 1830s a Scottish inventor, Robert Davidson, rigged a carriage with an electric motor powered by batteries. This, too many, is the first electric car. In 1888, inventors in the US, Britain and other European countries were inventing 3 and 4 wheeled vehicles powered by electricity. These were mostly curiosities until 1897 when the Pope Manufacturing company became the first company to commercially sell electric cars. It topped out at about 15 MPH and needed to be charged every 30 miles. In the next 2 years people could choose from an array of electric vehicles and in New York City there was a fleet of taxies that were run by electricity. Soon those cars spread to Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC. During the last few years of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th there were over 100 companies offering electric cars. Something like 28% of 4000 American autos produced in 1900 were electric. At the New York Auto show that year there were more electrics on display than gas and steam driven vehicles. However in the 1920s the market for electric cars dried up, and hasn't gotten any better. The reasons why electric cars were faded into obscurity while gas powered cars became the dominant vehicle are complex and debated to this day. If only the electric car hadn't been sidelined and development had continued the world might have been a very differently place.

As a side-note: Originally, Henry Ford was developing a biodiesel-powered car, and had it well underway, when his oil tycoon buddies persuaded him to use petroleum gasoline instead. One hand washes the other

You sure it was Edison and not Mark Twain that became the victim of Tesla's little prank?

Tom Edison thought he was bright,
He invented the electric light,
Then, to his chagrin,
When turning in,
His wife said, "I'll be reading tonight."

When Diesel designed his engine, he not only intented it to run on alternative fuels, but actually did so as a demonstration of its capabilities.

Quote:
Diesel demonstrated his engine at the Exhibition Fair in Paris, France in 1898. This engine stood as an example of Diesel's vision because it was fueled by peanut oil - the "original" biodiesel. He thought that the utilization of a biomass fuel was the real future of his engine. He hoped that it would provide a way for the smaller industries, farmers, and "commonfolk" a means of competing with the monopolizing industries, which controlled all energy production at that time, as well as serve as an alternative for the inefficient fuel consumption of the steam engine. As a result of Diesel's vision, compression ignited engines were powered by a biomass fuel, vegetable oil, until the 1920's and are being powered again, today, by biodiesel.

Actually Edison bought the patent for the Light bulb from two Canadian inventors.
