He's got 50 posts, and name drops more than anyone I've ever seen. All the magicians from across the world seem to "consult with him" for various effects. Is this guy legit, or full of B.S.? |

Now he knows some secret technique of Brent Braun:

He showed it to me after he released the DVD, I understand why he held it back, it's very strong. and he helped design a close-up pad: Quote:
I helped Trevor design the mat via a friend who works in plastics and he learned the muscle pass from John C. Quote:
I should know, I was taught by John Cornelius himself Starting to freak me out. How long before he assisted Moses with hauling the stone tablets? |

Ya know, if he is in LA and active at the castle he very well could be friends with these folks. I knew a kid who worked at a register in Costco (this was in Santa Clara California) and he would tell my wife how his band was doing well, then how they got a recording contract, then how he was done with the CD and hoped it would do well, then he was off to LA to shoot a video etc.. All while running the register. That lil' guy is now a millionaire rock star and he's never been back to Costco. People do know people, depends on where you are at the time.

If he works at the magic castle, and has known all these people for so long:
- Someone would have said hi back to him. The only response he's gotten was David Regal saying "I don't own that" after Doogan claimed to have seen Regal perform an effect - The castle is paying him pretty good, since he's got enough cash to fly to Canada and other states frequently to "consult" Sorry, I just don't see it. I think he's trying to pull a "Being There" to fit in (reference the movie). IMHO of course. |

well, at least he didn't claim to know Houdini - just what he may be up to in the afterlife
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

He says he is an American living in the UK.
While some of the posts he has made are rather startling, the truth is there is still a real disconnect between the US and the UK. I have seen a lot of examples of people who are well known in Europe and the UK who are virtually unknown in the US, and vice versa. Also, bear in mind that if he doesn't work in Magic as a professional, he may be comparatively unknown outside of his local magic circle. Milt Kort worked as a pharmacist in Detroit all his life. The only time he worked in Magic fulltime was when he briefly worked the counter at Sterling Magic as a kid, and yet he knew, and was known and respected by the likes of Dai Vernon, Dr. Daley, Charlie Miller, Marlo, Paul Rosini, Cardini, and on and on... Some say Milt was the creative force behind Bobo's Modern card Magic as well as its chief contributor. I definitely take what Mike Doogan says with a grain of salt but I would hesitate to scoff at his posts without evidence to contradict him. Have any of the named magicians actually denied what he said?
Woke up.

I'd take what he says loaded up like a Chicago style hotdog. But I am always quick to scoff. I've heard of Milt Kort.

Vandy, How do you know this guy's legit? I know because I was having lunch with Lance Burton and Penn and Teller. This was right around the time I had designed Lances dove act. We were talking about some of the great magicians around when David Blaine came over and joined us. Normally I like David, and when I was working on his latest stunt, we were very close. But I felt that David had used a few moves (that I taught him, but asked him to keep to himself) on a recent television appearance with my friend Jay Leno. Anyway, David and I worked it out and started talking about the time Vernon said my cup and ball work was surpassed only by my card innovations. Many of which Vernon himself used in later years. Suddenly my cell phone rang and it was David Copperfield (again). I’ve been sessioning with Copperfield for many years. And,of course, have designed a great many of his miracles. David was calling for some advice on the presentation of an illusion that I had designed and built for him. He wasn’t really getting the “idea” of the illusion, but I was able to walk him through it over the phone and get him back on track. Now you have to understand, when I started the Magic Castle, there wasn’t the interest in magic that we see now. When my good friend Al Gore invented the internet (based on an idea I had come up with) the interest in magic and access to magic secrets became very wide spread. But prior to that there were only a few people, like myself, who consulted and helped critique the work of most of the “major” magicians. I was one of those guys. I worked on and off with Harry Houdini, Harry Blackstone, Dai Vernon, Al Fosso, Channing Pollock, Horace Goldin, Kalanag, Slydini, and Howard Thurston. It was when I working with Houdini that I first heard of Doogan. Harry said "have you ever met Doogan"? And I said “no”. And Harry said I should get to know him because he knows everyone and can pretty much do everything. That’s when I knew Doogan was legit. I’ve never had the opportunity to meet him. But believe me, all my friends say he’s “Da Man” (direct quote). That’s how I know.
