Here's the article...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070330/ap_o......d_theory The REAL question is... is the guy related?!?! (Houdin -- who was (also) no stranger to changing the course of history in Africa) Cheers! -- TW |

Houdin did not change the course of history in Africa. Houdin was the father-in-law of Jean Eugene Robert, who married Houdin's daughter. He then, under special privilege of the French government, was allowed to use a hyphenated last name, Robert-Houdin.
It is never correct to refer to the magician as Houdin. It is correct to refer to him as Robert (before he married) or Robert-Houdin. The man in the article may be an inlaw.

There's a great Robert-Houdin story. I will really be brief. But here's the basics... a little old lady was on a train in France. A couple of magicians wound up in the same compartment. They began to talk to her and befriended here (I don't think magic was mentioned or done). Anyway she gave them her address and phone number and said if they were ever near her home to call for a visit.
They didn't pay a lot of attention to it. But then, one day, one of them was nearby and did call. She invited him over for a cup of tea. Magic was brought up. She said, "A relative of mine died a long time ago and left some books in a closet, would you like to have them? They are just collecting dust." He got them and she said, "His name was Robert-Houdin". True story. Name of recipient witheld to protect the collection/value, etc.

WOW!!!
That is really wonderful. It reminds me of a story about Jim Moran, who was absolutely the most incredible practical joker of all time, as well as a heck of a PR man. He knew a movie mogul who decided to invest in books. The man was not educated, but he had lots of money. He heard that the mogul was going to be at a big party, so he hired a friend of his to come in as a Texas oil man (this was a LOOONG time ago) and pull the stunt. So, the "oil man" met the movie mogul. And eventually the subject turned to books. So the movie mogul explains that he had been looking for a very old Bible. That was the cue. The oilman said, "I used to have an old Bible. Big thing! It was bound in leather. Some German guy named Gutten something printed it." The mogul trembled with anticipation. "Do you still have it?" "Naw. It wasn't no good. I threw it out. Some idiot named Martin Luther had scribbled in the margins."
