Does anyone have one? I have hardwood floors, a couple rugs, cats and a dog. My wife bought it for $30 at Target. Should I take it out of the box?

By all means take your cat & dog out of the box
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Ok. After receiving such helpful input, I went ahead and opened it. Although the retractable cord seemed like a good idea, it isn't long enough to reach across my family room. It's going back.

Extension cord, maybe?

Just the thought of taking out an extension cord, to use the built in convenience feature, would make me mad every time I used it.
