I did my first shows yesterday! I set up in Chester UK.
I was doing about a 15/20min show for 15 plus people at a time! (I think - it all seems like a blur now!) It was great fun and I had great feedback from audiences (kind words, applause and money!) I was out for about 2 hrs and did 5 shows (I think) and made £37 which, as this was a trial run, I am very happy with! There are many things to learn and improve on from this experience but man have I got the bug now!!! Next time I plan on staying out longer but doing pretty much the same show to really try and learn what works and what needs work on! Thanks for reading my rambling! Jasper

Hi Kondini, I was at the cross (where all the shopping streets meet). It was tough building a good edge but once I started my show poeple would come over to watch!

They will soon get to know your there,,,then the edge will be easy.
Any problems with the Council or Bill ? Also, any mouth from the shopkeepers! |

I had two police men watch from a distance, they watched the whole show but didn't comment (or tip) but from speaking to other performers (and knowing an ex-council member) the coulcil are happy for street performers to work as long as they don't cause any problems.
I was not near shops to create them any hassle. Cheers for the comments

To grab attention I was using a TT and silk or doing card manips and wand twirls. I did a couple of quick card effects with signed cards as I built an edge and chatted to people.
my show was card from mouth with a magician gets it wrong angle, then a rope routine with a lot of testiculation (talking b****cks whilst waving arms about!), then into cups and balls (more cellini than Gazzo!). Ran about 12-15mins. Finished with thanking people for their Generosity and chatting to people! Pretty standard stuff but all done with my own presentations (I'm a trained dancer so I like to add movement into everything I do!) I wanted to go with the classics to really get a handle on what works and why. And its very true - you learn quick on the street!

Good start, Jasper, congrats.
Can I assume you didn't contact the council or city centre admin (or anyone else) about some kind of licence or permit to perform? G. |

I think if Jasper keeps doing 'testiculation' he might get arrested for sure - being a dancer he may have meant gesticulation?

I'm interested in hearing about your outing Brian.

Genghis - I didn't get permission - just turned up! this was on advice from other performers! From what I understand its the council that hold the permits so an individual one is not nessassary! This may be wrong.
Would be good to hear from other Uk buskers on this point! Is in not just London that you need a prmit for?

I'd like to hear more too. I did enquire once about York. Here's what they said...
First, you must fill in an application and then must perform on the street for the correct person from the council. Then you will be issued with a permit. There are a set of guidelines to follow which the council issue and you must agree to when applying. I would think this would probably be normal everywhere if fpr no other reason than people like to be in charge of eveything/ Where are you going this weekend? |

Mario Morris (a busker of considerable experience) always says that he finds it easier to say sorry than to ask permission!

LOL - yes I agree with Mario! Asking permission stops you just getting out there! I'm back in Chester this weekend. I would like to try York too, a tourist hot spot! Good quality buskers there too from what I remember.
