Is it just me or do some of the new dvd's seem less interested in quality and more interested in "lets get this recorded and on the market."
Example: Labelled, Canz, Gallerian Bend, just to name a few. Granted I like the effects, and I know to make a dvd takes a budget, and not everyone gets picked up by a-1 or l&l, but how hard is it to set a space with a nice backdrop curtain. Even Jay Matiolli has a more eye easing dvd for his items. Im sure most of us have acces to a room or magic shop we ca record in. Im currently writing my first set of lecture notes and plan on releasing them on dvd, so ive checked the cost, its not all that bad. The production, as far as recording location is the easy part, having them made is where the cost comes in. I just think the look and sound could be better on some of them for what we pay to buy them. Tell me what you think.

I would rather not pay for locations music etc..... stand in a white room and make a blockbuster budget.

Currently there is one company that I can think of who are making DVD's at a standard that is way above the typical 'handycam in the living room' type production that is all too common these days. The reason being that the people at the heart of this particular company feel that the art of magic is important and deserves more than what is currently being offered, even if that means spending a few quid and making a bit less back!
I'm not going to tell you who this company is! All I would say is watch this space! Dave.

Granted your paying for the effect, but I think the quality of the dvd shows a little bit about the perfomer themselves. If some of these effects took so log to create and perfect, why skimp, when it comes to sharing it. presentation is everything I magic, isn't it?

I will agree with the white room idea. like on the hot shot color chage dvds. their clean looking, and nothing but a white room. that works, just don't use your house, a park, etc....

L&L, Kozmo Magic, Bob Kohler are all high tech leaders in this field. Their DVD's are works of art!

I read a post on this site from Whit Hayden saying that he does all of the editing for the School for Scoundrels dvds. If that's true, then he's got a back up career waiting for him, those are put together well and full of "easter eggs".

Kermit,
Sorry bro beat ya to it! My lecture notes are on DVD and it is a 2 volume set. I highly suggest doing it as it has never (to my knowledge) been done before I did it. It has really been a big hit at the lectures. Good find. Justin N. Miller |

Justin thanks for the words of ecouragement. I do have one question, I'm not sure what to price them at. if it was just a trick, no problem, ive got 2 on the market, one supported by dan harlan. both will be taught in the notes, due to the fact they are sold exclusively in my area, the shop owner agrees its a good way to get them out. their will be around 20 effects.

This thread made me recall some of the old tapes which were released by Jay Sankey, filmed in his Toronto apartment with background traffic noises and all. Now it's all been revamped at Sankey Magic; high quality DVDs for every product. Very impressive, IMO.
I agree with the original post, kermitjohnson. I would add that sadly, the quality of the actual effects/teaching/methods on many of these new discs is alarming as well. There is an (over?)abundance of material on the magic market today, a lot of which is to be avoided at all costs. For an example of sheer class in a product, look to Homer Liwag's DVD release, CoinOne. That is a labour of love, and puts many other 'efforts' in the shadows. Cheers, Chris |

Kermit mentioned Canz which I assume is the one by Kevin Parker. I bought Passing Thru from Kevin Parker "Productions" and was dumbfounded by the lack of effort to make it look professional. You could hear his female camera operator giggling at one point. She obviously did not know how to effectively operate a camera - jerky movements and not zooming in or out as needed. And the explanation section was done sitting on his living room couch in front of his coffee table with very harsh lighting coming in from a window or sliding glass door.
I mean... buy a couple of lights, build a cheap backdrop, and find someone with some camera skills if you're going to claim to be a production company. Unless he comes out with the most impressive trick of the year, I won't be buying his products again. |

No offense to Kevin Parker as he seems like a really creative guy, but most of his products appear to be simply concepts as opposed to fully routined effects. That's fine and all but charging $17 or more for a video download of an interesting idea is ridiculous.

I'm happy to see so many replies. I do like some of the effects as I said earlier, but their lack of desire to make the dvd as nice as possible, makes you almost secod guess the effect. example, I'm workig on lecture notes that I plan to put on dvd, but if I cant afford the quality I want, ill stick with paper notes. I want my magic to have a "package and presentation" that shows the buyer my magic is worth the investment.

The poor quality DVD's have had one positive result. I know that people are more discerning now about paying out their cash for just anything.
