Last night, I got an e-mail from Fortasse with an attachment called: CUPS & BALLS In 18th CENTURY FRANCE -- OZANAM (1725) & GUYOT (1799) IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION Edited and with Introductions by Sean McWeeney Translated by Jane Poveromo.
I was am delighted to have this material. From about the 16th century onward, there has been a chain of books about recreational mathematics published in several different languages. Each of these books builds upon those previously published, very much like Hocus Pocus Junior and the book known to collectors as H. Dean. There have been countless editions of these books. Some of the recreational mathematics books contain work on the cups and balls. Two of the main ones are Ozanam and Guyot (which we call such after the names of their respective author/editors). These two books provide an interesting bridge between the work in Hocus Pocus Junior and the work that shows up in the 19th century in The Secret Out and Modern Magic. Unfortunately, some of the people who translated the mathematics books considered the cups and balls sections to be irrelevant, so they were omitted. Well, now you can have them, because Jane Poveromo has done a brilliant job of translating them, and Fortasse (AKA Sean McWeeney) has done an equally brilliant job of editing them and providing historical notes. If you do the cups and balls or you are a non-French reading magic historian, you really need this book. You will find all sorts of things in this e-book, from the cup through cup move to a primitive version of the chop cup. To obtain the book ABSOLUTELY FREE go to http://www.lulu.com/content/783627 and download it. You will need Adobe Acrobat reader, which is also available as a free download. My cup is off to Fortasse for doing this service for the magic community as a whole and the cups and balls community in particular.

One of the interesting things about the Ozanam section is that it teaches the cup-through-cup move. Also, you see the earliest reference I know of to the French equivalent of "woofle dust."
The Guyot section has a rudimentary chop cup.

Superb and useful work. One may regret that the author is a bit unfair with Ponsin.
It does not even need a recommendation, Sean McWeeney's study is a must for any serious C&Bs worker. Note the difference between the Anglo Saxon and Southern Europe introduction: in the Anglo Saxon routines the balls are simply placed on the table, in the French routines, the balls are made to appear with a very subtle way to obtain the extra ball within an effect. Just a superb work: I don't understand how I could not favorably comment on it before.

I missed this on the first go around, but grabbed it now. What a gem! You need not be into your cups to appreciate the value of these chapters.
Belated thanks, Bill, for helping to make this accessible! |
