Hello, I was wondering what kinds of pins/ size/ color of "head" of pin would be used with actual voodoo dolls?
Where might I be able to get a voodoo pin/ hat-pin that has some atmosphere/ antiquity or general creepyness to it? Thanks- Mark

You make them. There are some great beads. A few years ago I came across some neat looking skull beads, a snip on the end of the pin, a dab of superglue, and I had a nice looking skull topped pin. Of course I had a friend who followed my example and sold them to bizarrists at $30 a piece. If you like, I can make an introduction... Tony |

Thanks Tony, good point. Some times I feel I'm pointed in one direction yet headed in another

You can find beads everywhere, but take a look at this place for ideas: http://www.landofodds.com/servlet/Catego......KELETONS Tony |

I thought that pins and voodoo dolls were an Urban Ledgend?

Pins and Voodoo Dolls is what "Voodoo Hoodoo" in The Wizards' Journal #12 (on my site) is all about. Several effects using each article are offered within the article, including a modern variation on Okito's (Theo Bamberg) Hindoo Talisman effect.

Thanks for the link Tony, very nice! I bought some antique hat pins on ebay, but I love the idea of the skull pin heads!

How about using a needle thru arm pin?

I've used my pin for needle through arm (neck). I may start putting it through the center of my hand (through the back of the hand and out the center of the palm). Tony |

Tony: I remember an effect that sounds like this - pin thru back of hand and exiting tru palm - that was sold by a gentleman in Washington, D.C., in the 70's (?). Not difficult to make, if you wanted to do it yourself. LOOKED truly wonderful, altho the set up was tricky . . . does this sound familiar?
He used beading pins, I think they were called. I carried them in a small cigarette package sized tin with alchohol wipes and all the necessaries. Caused high-born young maidens to nearly swoon . . . which made it all worth while, of course! brane |

I think I do, was it similar to the Yogi Skewer?
My inspiration comes from an old Sherlock Holmes movie. To prove the person was in a deep state of hypnosis, a large hatpin was puched through the hand. Although because of my unique situation, I can do it for real without pain. I just need to keep the thing clean so I don't get infected. Tony Ron, Thank you for that information. That is different than I thought and much safer. BTW: I'm one of your biggest fans! Tony |

And, and a little story about MyM and de needle. This was at a MOTM in San Mateo many years ago.
Tony's room was next to mine. About 5pm one day, I was leaving my room to head for the bar to vist with Punx, Cassidy and and some others. A room service guy with a six pack on a tray was approaching Tony's door. I paused to see if Tony would be coming along shortly. The door opened and there was the Mage in a tee shirt with the "needle" through the side of his neck dripping blood! Said room service guy dropped the tray, beer and all, and is probably still running south of San Diego. TEB3 |

I found some good one's on ebay. Most are too long for my purpose though. Does anyone know if a pin used for voodu/ voodun would be a specific color red/blue or is the whole voodoo doll thing just a myth and not a part of real voodoo practice-

Voodoo dolls are not really part of the actual voodoo tradition any more than they are any other tradition. Poppets and dolls are all objects of Sympathetic magic where an object is given the attributes of an individual or a god, and anything happening to the doll will affect the individual or god. (Microcosm/Macrocosm theories) This sort of magic is common in most belief systems that utilize magic in ritual (Hair dolls, worry dolls, wax dolls (A la Witches of Eastwick)).
So there would be no "traditional" color for the needles as it would vary by practicioner. So the color of the needles would be up to you. I'd advise against pink though. That's just wrong. Gwyd |

Lol !
Especially hot pink. I was just going to use plain ol' corsage pins, m'self. Although, I just recently discovered black head pins, which I would prefer to the white headed pins I'd bought a while back. I hadn't thought of using beads, great idea ! OTOH, simple is good too.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.
