In 1992, I was working downtown at a law firm close to the performing arts center where David Copperifield was to perform. I noticed davids buses pull up and waited on the sidewalk for the chance to say hello to him. I was scheduled to begin working shows on a cruise line within 6 months and wanted to tell him the good news (like hed care). David walked off the bus, and completely blew me off as he grabbed a few small bags from the baggage deck. Next thing you know, Don Wayne stepped off, and I ran over to have him sign an autograph. Don was blown away and had his head in the clouds when he realized that I knew who he was. I began to rattle off many of the don wayne ideas and effects I used in my show. Davids ears perked up then, as he realized he blew a true perfromer off.
Don invited me into the theater for over an hour. Next thing you know, David walks up with his two twin assistants. Asks if there was any way I could take them to some local shopping malls. Well, OF COURSE. These girls trashed david the enitre 5 hours we were together. They said if this show wasnt building up their resume, theyd be gone in a second. Some of the stuff I heard about david cost him any respect I had for him. When dropping the girls off back at the theater, they mentioned that they did not pull out for the next town till morning. They ended up clubbing with me all night that night. Just when I thought I was going to meet my idol at the time, ended up meeting the real important people of the show! And learned real quick how to treat the people who call themselves fans. |

That's a very sad story even if you wern't a "true preformer" and just a fan he should have the courtsey to at least be cordial.

This is unfortunate, there is a right way to handle this...
I remember years ago meeting someone I will not name in the lobby of a hotel after a show. I said hello to him, by name, and very politely. He did not want to get to know me, but as he walked past me, he managed to respond with a greeting and a smile. He handled it so that I did not feel he was rude at all, yet he kept on walking off to where ever he was going. It was not that hard to do, and I was left thinking he was a nice guy.

Probably David was having an off day or someone p**** in his cereal bowl. When we (me, my brothers and my parents) met up with Mr. Copperfield in 2003 he seemed pretty generious to allow us to meet up with him.

Your bashing the guy for something that happened in 1992!?!?

This is the same guy who does meet and greets back stage, signs autographs (even mails them out to you if you send mail to him), and visits hospitals for his Project Magic. Two girls who were hired by David then turn around and bash thier employeer. Exactly how old were these girls, I am sure that will reflect the stories they told to an interested guy. Sorry to hear that you felt you were ditched and your idol didn't appear to be all that. To me it looks like you missed a lot of what happened.

Yeah you assume they werent lying, I mean how many of us hate our bosses and exaggerate how bad they are. Something else of course they would do something else what model type girl's first choice is to be a magicians assistant.

Sadly there are very few "superstars" who can afford to stay in close contact with their fans - as the fan base is simply too big. So all they can do is to try to appear as nice as possible, sometimes making an exception, knowing that it will be good PR for them.
Imagine me running to Eric Clapton after the show, telling him how good I master his riffs on my strat and proudly tell him that I work in a cheesy bar, playing some of his songs, accompanying a lousy singer. Will never happen.
