I am looking for a small sound system that can reach a crowd up to 250 people. This system must have a hook-up for an IPOD as well as a built in Wireless Headset Microphone. Must have seperate volumes controls for music and head set and you must be able to stand within 2 feet of the speaker system. I need this to weigh no more than 20-25 lbs.
Cost Factor: Under $ 400.00 Must be Brand New from a company that is reputable Thank You in advance for any help in the above matter. I do not want a Florida PAS 767. Rodney

Those are some hefty demands.
The Florida system sucks. I had it and should have returned it but did not know any better at the time. It was horrible. And very expensive. I doubt you'll find what you're looking for but at least you're making the right choice by ridding yourself of the Fla. system. Personally I would never buy a system that had a built-in anything. Wireless Mic, CD player, mp3 player, no way. Better to invest in separate components. Better quality and if one component goes bad, you replace just that component. Best of luck.

1. Stand Within Two Feet to Prevent Feedback This can be accomplised by putting the speakers high on a tripod stand. With most speakers, you do not want to walk in front of them with a microphone, especially ceap ones, because that is what causes the feed back. 2. Handle 250 Person Audience Rule of Thumb is "Divide the audience in half and that is the wattage you seek". 250/2 = 125 wattage system, or a system somewhere between 80 and 150 watts. 3. Weight 20-25 lbs This is difficult because increased wattage means increased magnet in speaker and increased power coil in the amplifier. Quality speakers and quality amplifer cost money especially from an established PA System dealer. 4. Small in Size Keeping the weight down means keeping the size of the speaker smaller and smaller amplifier. Small size does not push enough air to fill a room full of 250 people. The number of people and surroundings will absorb the sound waves, reducing or echoing what is produced. 5. Wireless Headset Microphone. Must be cheap to keep the cost down. requires a built in one or an external transmitter and receiver. 6. Control for IPods RCA Inputs The list does not state stereo speakers so the input is mono. This can be done using RCA connectors and mono jack for the IPod. A Boom Box for IPods with a AUX input will not handle 250 persons, and not have seperate controls. 7. Control for Wireless Internal Microphone Most systems do have seperate controls for each input. 8. Brand New from Quality Dealer Quality dealers cost money, BOSE, Anchor, etc. A mail order house having a sale might help. Many systems have at least a 50% in-store mark-up value. Find the system you want and then try to find the price you want. 9. Cost Less than $400 An 80/100 watt base speaker unit with two inputs and controls would keep the cost down. Add in a cheap wireless headset microphone and you just may be able to do it. 10. Florida PAS 767 is Out It is a 20 watt system (40 person audience), has two inputs weighs about 5 lbs meaning not a powerful amp coil or speaker. I took mine apart and tried to change the speaker but the amp couldn't handle the speaker. Since it has a small speaker ithe sound is "tinny" when music is played. It has no cross-overs for base, mid-range and treble sound outputs nor does it have three speakers for each of these ranges or an all-in-one speaker with these ranges. The price of $400 is quite high compared to the $150 Fleco FPA 22 which appears to be equivlient. It has two mics and it does not say of it has an AUX input. Understanding Above I found this system for under $200 in numberous places. I have no idea of it's maker or quality but it beats the Florida System PYLE PWMA3600 - 200 Watt Wireless Bat......5.00 PDF Manual for PYLE PWMA3600 - 200 Wa......stem

Rodney, I wrote a little more detail on your other post, so I'll keep this one short. I don't know if what you seek in a $400 price range exists, but the Carvin Stagemate might be worth considering.

There is a stagepas system with speaker stands and w/mic and receiver for sale in the "illusions and equipment for sale" section here for $650. The mic can't vouch for but the stagepas system I can. I believe he would sell just the stagepas too. For the money I don't think one could do much better. The stagepas is transported in one trip with about 20 lbs in one hand and about 25lbs in the other.
If you plan on performing for 250 people, don't settle for a system that will just "reach" 250 people. My voice alone can "reach" 250 people. Most of the small compact systems out there rated under 125 watts per channel are only suited for rather small crowds in close proximty. Also do not underestimate the importance of speaker stands. As far as the wireless mic, unless you are willing to spend at least $250 for the microphone and receiver...I would opt for a wired mic and neck holder. Go cheap in a wireless and that is how you will sound, not to mention reliability and feedback issues. I was looking for very similar requirements to those stated above but I did not set a weight or price limitation. I looked long and hard at various systems for over 6 months. I went to sound stores, peoples houses, and outdoor gigs of various nature to see what was on the market. I found that I could not meet the above features new for under $900 weighing at 45 lbs and still sound professional. I also have talked with many professionals that have performed under more cicumstances that I can imagine such as Denny Haney, Puck, Jeff McBride and various others. One thing they all told me is "never..ever skimp on microphones". Also to always have a decent wired backup because wireless systems of any quality are not completely reliable. I say these things not to discourage anyone but to help save a lot of money spent on garbage. Just read through the posts in here and you will see many professional performers that tried to find that perfect $200 system, then $400 system, then $600 system, then $800 system...$2900 later...well...not the perfect system but it will do...the $900 system they should have bought the first time. |

John,
You are right here, however, I was trying to stay within the guidelines given. It was an interesting task. Like yourself, I looked at lots of systems, bought lots of systems trying to find the perfect combination. Does such a system exist?

Dennis,
I saw what you were trying to do, and you did it quite well. You stayed much more true to the direct topic than I. I was just offering my 2 cent worth and expected change being I had reitterated some of what you had already said. I have a tendency to go beyond the direct topic at hand, sometimes a good thing...sometimes not so good. It's just when I see posts like this I often later see an unhappy buyer because the expectations are just unrealistic. Like almost everyone that I know purchased a Fla 767 system. Just one more note in relation to companies like this... Be wary of any PA system that advertises itself with quotes like "will fill a high school gym". No high quality manufacturer makes quantitative claims like this. Sound is a very qualitative thing to any professional that understands the value of good acoustics. |

I really can't knock the Florida system too much because it did work well for me. It is when you get another system, or find the limitations of you systems that frustration creaps in.
The Wireless microphone that comes with the Pyle system above is a cheap FM handheld microphone. I've used these and they do appear to work, but no where near the quality of a UHF wireless. I am now studying the specifications of every system if I find them because they tell me a lot. The Plye has an 8" woofer ans a 2.5 tweeter which blows away the Flordia system and for $200 less. My Fender Passport 150 weighs 28-lbs and the Pyle weighs-30 lbs I am going backwards here. I cancelled my order for the Fleco FPA-22 because it has no inputs for music. No need to compare this with the Fla. system. It will sound better but for voice only.

Dennis,
We all need to bombard Fender with our wants and maybe they will build the perfect system someday! I love the features of the new PD-500 Passport system, but 5oo watts?!!! I would prefer that they would lower the wattage down to 250, or maybe 300 and in the process remove a few pounds of amplifier weight. Speakers could possibly be lighter also since they would not need to handle as much power. The channel controls of the PD-5oo and the digital effects processor would be great for me. Plus, I could use the 2 extra channels at my music gigs. Regan

The weight of the speaker has a lot to do with the wattage and the weight of the Amplifier adds to this.
The Pyle and Fleco systems are not considered "systems" of the music Pros" while Fender, Anchor, Bose, to name a few are. Name brands cost money! With Quality comes money! Like Dennis, I too have tried and continue to try new systems that us real world performers can use. I always go for the smaller systems that are lightweight and easy to transport. The bigger sytems are nice but they kill your back and take forever to setup.

It appears that Best Buys sells them for a good price but it may be only online. I see a drawback already.
