When I think of doing an opening card trick, I think about using this to my advantage to have the deck stacked and ready to go. I've been using either the Chicago Opener OR just a 4 Aces production for a long time, but I find that I should be able to go further and have more than 4 or 5 cards stacked for a truly remarkable opening.
What are your suggestions? Or do I have this whole stacking-the-deck-for-opening-trick as a bad idea? Any ideas and suggestions welcome! |

Stacking is fine as long as it looks shuffled.

I agree... but I'd rather finish with my strongest trick. Since that could be greatly increased by a stack, I like a deck swith somewhere in the middle...

When I'm doing restaurant work, I have my deck stacked for Chicago Surprise and Anniversary Waltz for each table. Having a deck stacked isn't a bad thing, just depends on whether your prefer impromptu or not (and how quick the reset is if applicable.)

I've always liked having the cards shuffled while introductions are continuing and then adding my copped 11 card packet before the heat has begun.

I agree with NOSHER.
If you start out with an examineable deck and do miracles then add gaffs, I feel it is stronger. |

Brother John Hamman had a terrific stack, which the name escapes me, where many of his small-packet tricks were stacked into one deck. It was truly a remarkable concept. I'm not at home, so I can't look it up, but I'm sure someone else will chime in. It's in 'The Secrets of Bro. Hamman (the big yellow one).

A couple of years ago I put together my own "stack". It led into an oil & water routine, followed by a gambling demo, followed by a follow the leader, followed by a full deck Out of this World (actually, Galaxy).
It was strong, fun to watch (based on feedback), and worked for me. Took a year of fiddling to get it right for me but the idea has opened lots of possibilities. These days, well TODAY to be specific, I have a deck stacked in order to perform "Further than That" with a hover card Ace of Spades kicker at the end (occasionally people would ask me to go furthre than a royal flush and the hover card is a total and clear ending to the effect). The hover card is loaded during the dealing process and since the "FTT" stack is a top stack, it is easy to spread the cards on the table and show them to be random (in my experience, an uneven spread when putting the cards down, is a really good incidental convincer). The hover card is taken off (loaded onto/into the card case a la Limo Service) and the deck can be shuffled or otherwise used for additional effects. -Carlos

Thank you for all your replies.
I really like the idea of using the entire stack to do your entire show, but at some point I felt that it is only fair if the spectator shuffled the deck at one point, and thus ruining my stack. But I will look into it. The copping idea sounds intresting too, but I am not confident with palming cards. |

I currently carry one deck stacked for Lennart Green's Poker Deal, one in Aronson stack, and one regular deck, and switch between them as required.

I sometimes open stacked for Galaxy. The immediate riffle shuffle always takes care of any suspicion.

I carry 2 decks, One "stacked" for Overkill and one Stack with mnemonica. I open with overkill and change decks almost at the end.

I have a deck stacked for the effect "Ghost by David Stone. Very easy to do, needs only 4 cards of a kind (one on top, three on the bottom) and can be followed immediately by "Weighting Aces" by Gregory Wilson.
After finishing, the two routines, I can place the cards on the necessary position in the deck and move on, or do a deck switch and perform other effects. Carsten

I usually get 20 minutes out of a 7 card top stack with 4 aces on the bottom of the deck.
FWIW Cheers!

It looked random at the beginning and the effects leading up to the last effect set the deck for Galaxy. So it starts off looking random, I do a few effects, then I shuffle the deck and finish with galaxy. You are absolutely correct, NO suspicion at all! -Carlos

Yeah Carlos, I've often thought that with your other threads. Seems we have a similar act. We'll share some more thoughts in a PM.

There are many spectator cuts to the aces plots which are easy to construct a way that doesn't disturb the order, for example Randy Wakeman's excellent "spectator on stage" (Apocalypse, June 1987). You can follow with a Twisting the Aces and the Christ/Aronson Aces (see Simon's website). Three short and visual effects which don't disturb anything. I do this sequence often. Jan
