I have had lots of trouble with my spider pen and it's really frustrating. It randomly cuts off the power of the motor and each time it does I have to change the battery it is really frustrating. I have gone through both reels because of it. I am not going to use it in performance as I am afraid that the power will cut off and the performace will be ruined because of it.
does anybody know why this happens or how to fix it? |

Welcome to the Café. Try typing in "spider pen" in the above search feature. You'll find plenty of help there. Good luck.

It may be defective, every now and then one will be that way. If you cannot account for the motor shutdown for any other reason, I'd return it to the dealer you bought it from for an exchange.

Someone bought one from me and came over to pick it up.
I was embarassed by it's functionality and thought for sure he'd want his money back. he told me, "i guess I'll figure it out" as he left. from that experience, there's not a chance in the world I'd recommend that to any of my customers. if I had one I'd give it to pete biro.

Get rid of it..... and go here:
http://sorcery.safeshopper.com/1/cat1.htm?617 Get yourself an invisible thread reel manufacturered by the folks who invented the invisible thread reel. Always the best, still the best, why would you buy anything else? No motor, no batteries, completely reliable, works every single time you need it to work. |

I'd like to add one more thing. The first one I bought was defective right out of the package. I called the manufacturer and they accomodated me by sending me a brand new one. I'll give them credit for that.
I have found this product to be very delicate and anyone I know who uses one has a back up ready to go. The suggestion to go with an original ITR is good. personally I prefer using the Jon LeClair hook up, it's very manageable. All IT magic is a pain in the butt. why make it worse with the pen?

You ITR slaves, I CHALLENGE you to get the reel back to exactly how it was when you bought it - same tension and everythin'.....you CAN'T!!! I'm stickin' with my spiderlicious dispenser of the invisible miracle stuff. Spiderpen, Spiderpen, Does whatever ITR can, Can it float, A bank note, Yes it can, It's the MAN, Look out....coz here comes Spiderpen. Over and out Kip |

I have gone thru a number of itr's. The best one I ever owned was an itr inside a beeper case until it finally bit the dust, but I had it for years of service. The thread boss I bought several and all went kapooey. I have had the spider pen for about 2 years now and it is still working fine. However I must say that I use loops more now than the pen. Chuck

Kip - you crazy guy! (judging by your photo)
My hat's off to you... yes the spider pen is an awesome tool... I'm sure you're a very talented guy. Personally it's just too much trouble for me! (after all I'm only Mediocre the great) But if someone has the time, patience and tenacity to master the spider pen, miracles can be crated. I did not mean to rip it to shreads. On the other hand, no one should buy this thinking it's an easy thing to use. And as far as the quality is concerned... I'm just relating my experience. By the way, check out the comments on the SPIDER PEN 2 on the Latest and greatest board.... looks promising. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......18&4

Well, I actually just ordered a Spiderpen and I better like it, and it better not brake. I am a perfectionist when it comes to anything, so I am sure I have enough patience to master this baby. It's funny, either people love it or hate it, there is no imbetween. I better be one of those who loves it, or I'm hunting Yigal's azz down!!

I have two. By switching parts I can usually keep one working. However, I use it less and less all the time.

I do not own one, but I did a lot of research on it because of was thinking about purchasing one. From what I learned is that more than not people had problems with them. One of the biggest complaints I read about was the battery issue. some of the magicians were changing the battery for every performance so they wouldn't have to worry about it. It appears that the spider pen is an energy hog. I only read about a few instances where the book would not work at all, and if I remember correctly if you send it back in they will repair or replace it at no charge (check that out though I am not 100% sure on it).
I did buy a reel from Sorcery based on Ron Jaxons recomendations and I have been quite happy with its performance, but then again I am not using it every week.

Kip...LMAO...Love the "Spider-man/pen" theme song...I also like the Pen, but its not the best ITR I've used. Years ago there was a guy in either Nor Cal or Oregon who made an ITR called the "Underground Reel" These were the best I've ever seen or used. I just wish I could remember the guys name so I could see if he is still making them.
As for the Spider Pen, the major problem is that the Battery dose die pretty fast, I tested a brand new battery and if you leave the power on and the thread is retracted the battery will die in 20-25 mins. So what I do is only use the power to retract the thread once I've removed my anchor point. There are many ways to maintain tension on the line during the effect and also animate the object depending on what it is. I would suggest picking up some books or DVD's on using normal ITR's You will find many of the same techniques can be used with the pen that are used with the standard ITR. And I would also reccommend studing some or all of Finn Jonn's techniques with Elastic Loops and ITR's. Anyway Good Luck and don't give up. Later & Out RJ |

Look inside there really good to see if this is the case. If so then clean it out. This is why I always use putty instead of wax on all my ITR's. Another thing that sometimes happens is the arm (Or clip) gets moved out of position. By the "Arm" I mean the metal part that you use to clip it onto your pocket. This fits in a little groove at the top. Make sure it's aligned with the groove it's suppose to fit in. If it isn't in that groove then it'll push against the cap (And the cap will in turn push against the inner spool) and stop the spool from turning. So give taht a look and see if that's the problem. Any ITR can have problems. Especially ones that use a motor. Great care is needed to keep it in working condition. When I'm not using my spider pen I keep it in a plastic bag to prevent dust build up. It's a good idea to blow in the spool compartment every once in a while to make sure no dust has built up. I do suggest you put a new battery in it before each show (I'm talking about hired gigs). Better safe then sorry. They aren't very expensive at walmart (hearing aid batteries). When the spider pen is working properly I love it. I like the tension and the fact that the tension never increases. If you check out the products section of my site you'll find an alternative ITR pen that uses no batteries. It's a great reel too. Ron Jaxon |

I have 2 spider pens...I like it better than the ITR. If you buy replacement batteries from dealer it's cheaper than buying one from the store. The only thing that keeps breaking with mine is the thread...and I don't think that's the pen's fault.
