Yesterday was a big day for me, I finally had the chance to get a second dove. My first dove was lonely and started to pluck itself naked. I was on the search for a female dove, the store only had one dove and luckly it was a female.
Unlike my first dove, when I brought her home, she immediately settled down. My original dove, on the other hand, decided it would be cool to show off! My original dove is well trained, but now he doesn't come near me nor does he like it when I pet him. I guess he will become a "loser" with the female and will begin to settle back down. The two are doing great, I had first planed to purchase the dove after I purchased a dove vanishing box. But then I found it best for the two to get to know each other before the new dove begins training. Any tips on getting a bird routine started?

I'd like to get a second dove also.
The only one around is in a pet store. That dove eats its poop in the bottom of it's pet store cage. My dove does not do that. Afraid if I get the other one, it will teach my current dove to eat poop also. Are my assumptions wrong?

Pet store doves are usually not recommended unless you can verify their origin. Pet stores don't care for doves the way we do and you never know what you are getting.
As for eating the poop, some birds do that. It shouldn't be their diet and if it is eating it often, then there is something wrong or unappealing about the seed they are being fed. It won't hurt the dove if done in moderation.

If pet store doves are not recommended, where do you suggest they should be looked at/purchased.

There are many sources, not all of which are available to everyone.
Try your local magic shop if there is one in your area. They may know of someone who breeds them. Try a local magic club like SAM or IBM. Try talking to other magicians that do dove magic. They may have some available from time to time. Post a request in the Let's make a deal forum Try contacting one or members, Dakota Rose. He breeds doves and has supplied many of the Café members with them. Use the internet to find dove breeders or look at the American dove association web site for people that raise doves. The problems with pet store doves is that you don't know the doves background, like what they have been exposed to, how healthy they are, or how old they are. These are all important things to know before you buy a dove.

Hi Dave:
You talked about the "Let's make a deal" forum. Where can I access that from, and also, after I have 50 postings on here, how do I get access to the special place where secrets and tips are talked about? Thanks in advance for the information. |

Brian, when you reach 50 posts, those forums, including the "Let's make a deal" area, will automatically appear in the list of forums you now see.
