Well first off I need to set the back story. My Father plays cribbage with a friend of his, she is in the early 30s I guess. And me and her have this weird relationship, we both have a sarcastic sense of humor. So we always make these "insulting" comments at each other. She always loses at crib so that is my main ammo.
Well one day she was in a mood, and made some comment while I passing through the living room, headed to the washroom. She made some comment, I was in too much of a hurry to respond. But while in the washroom, I thought of something, that I thought was ingeniously funny. I went to the kitchen and poured a glass of water, and put some ice cubes in it. I gave it to her, and said "I just thought you may need something your own body temperature to drink." Personally I thought that was funny as ever. Seemed strike a cord with her. Well here is my idea, which I am not sure if it would be mean or funny, or at least to her. I was thinking of supercooling a bottle of water, that is where the water temperature goes below it's freezing point while remaining in a liquid state. As soon as it is disturbed ice crystals form and it "flash freezes." Now you can see where this is going, I offer her the bottle of water, she takes it and it freezes in her hand ROFL. What do you think?

Cliffs rule for playing practical jokes, if it was done to you, would you walk away laughing about it? If you would, then go ahead and do it. If you would be hurt, angry or upset, then let it be.

I don't know the woman in question, but if someone were to do that to me, they'd better have a means of hasty retreat and excellent health insurance.

You could market it as "PMS Water".
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Paul Newman used to be a big pratical joker. He then realized that joles make someone look stupid or foolish as they start to go to far when you start to "top" each other.

Your retort needs to be spontaneous and at the exact moment of the conversation. Leaving and returning does not count. Hind site is not acceptable. Remember George Costanza?? “The ocean called, they’re out of shrimp”…
Come on buddy, you gotta be quick on your feet. :goodluck: |

Oh it's spontaneous enough, but there was a more pressing matter I needed to attend to at that particular time lol.

May I ask your age? It matters for 'jokes' of the nature you find funny. Was the woman behaving in a manner that meant she was cold blooded as in showing no concern for people? If you are a kid do your parents appreciate rudeness to guests? Often with kids a quick wit warrants a back hand.

No my fathers laughs at the comments I make at her, and the ones she makes at me.

I still stand behind my original comment....as a woman AND as someone who loves a good practial joke (I've got references that can attest to my love of practial jokes...both giving and receiving), the "flash freezing" would not go over well with me. Stick with joking about her losing at cribbage.

Margarette makes a good point. Joking about something insignificant, like a game, is fair play. When you get into the personal stuff you run the risk of hurting her self esteem. I playfully insult another member here at the Café. After accidentally hitting a nerve, I decided to stick with subjects that he jokes about himself.

MAK, some interesting trivia for you sir. When Hilary did her PBS show on the need for universal health care (which won't work since they assume companies will continue overing health insurance....right) several years ago my brother was one of the four people covered. I'll always remember him going down the hall in the hospital and the Hilary said "He is walking to take therapy so he might get back to a normal life" or something like that...actually he was heading out to have a smoke with the convicts down the hall. They had a huge artistic painting of him over hear head too, cracked me up.

When I got laid off, I had to pay $1000.00 a month to keep my wife and baby insured. My parents, in their 70s, who retired because of my father's brain injury, pay $1,200.00 a month and it's going up $600.00 more. Until you have a better idea, shut your yaps. When you figure it out, start a different thread, we're talking about Joey's joke.

Several things: first, is the bit about her being cold something she's particularly sensative to? If no, then, presumably, this would not be particularly hurtful and I'd say go for it. If someone did the supercooled water to me, I think I'd find it funny...
Second, If the answer to the above question is yes, ie, that it would be a "low blow", then a few other issues show up: Is whatever she's been doing to you sufficient that you have reasonable justification in doing it to make the point? If the answer to _that_ is yes, then even if so, do you really want to, or do you want to "rise above" the situation? Now, having reread the initial post, I gather that what goes on between the two of you isn't particularly nasty or malicious. If that is correct, then if at some point she did say or do something that was particularly hurtful to you, then I would assume it to be inadvertent. If so, then it may be better to simply tell her that whatever it was was more painful than funny for you. If nothing particularly hurtful happened at all in the first place, then it would seem the entire question then reduces to the first one: Would, as near as you can tell, she be particularly sensative to the issue of her being "cold"? If no, then, as I said above, go for it. |
