Greetings and Salutations,
Ditto what gsidhe said! He has just described about half of the days I've worked at faire. And the income. Across the Midwest there are faires starting in April and then running regularly to October, but you'll have to travel from OK to WI, with stops in MO, KS and IA along the way. If you want to make a full-time living at this type of event, you will have to travel. Renfests take place from February through November, depending on location and climate. You'll travel from Florida up the coast or across the Midwest and either onto the west coast or back to where you started. It's not for everybody -- at least working the circuit isn't. It's not for me! But, if you're young, don't have much in the way of responsibilities (family, mortgage, day-job, etc.), I'd think it'd be a great way to see the country and work your act to a fine point. That's my way more than $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV Joe Zeman aka The Mage Ulysses |

Actualy, they are hard to find, but there is a periodical called "Uproots". It's a listing of all the faires in the nation and a graph showing there time and relation to each other. You could, concievably, perform at renaisance festivals year round. Don't know why you would, but you could.

Here is the thing that nobody considers about the Renaissance fair.
They don't NEED a $1,000 a day performer. All they have to do is entertain who is in front of them. Many guys working up to a career work well there. College kids on break work great. BUT they don't draw people with the entertainment as a rule. The same crowd will be entertained by a $100 an hour guy. It is pure business. They are just making a good choice. They are better off getting a higher quality turkey leg, than magician. I am not saying anything about anyone who works there, just stating why pay may be so low.

Jack,
If you're interested, here's a pretty good list of where you can find Ren fairs: http://www.renaissancemagazine.com/fairelist.html Also check out: http://www.renaissancefestival.com/ You'll find a forumn on that page with plenty of good discussions about what's happening and where. Danny is right. They will be entertained pretty much by who ever is on the stage. If you're not that good, they''l walk off and your hat will suffer. It's a great way to work an act 10 times in one weekend and figure out what's working and what's not. |

Those are both pretty good lists, but the uproots graphs their list with a Calendar. It's a little visualy easier to absorb, if you are into that kind of thing.
As for my interest, there was once a time I thought that I might make performing magic, traveling from RenFaire to RenaFaire my career. That thought passed from my mind long long ago. I recently quit performing at a festival that I've been more or less headlineing since it opened because they changed sites, and it was an hour further away. I wond Do scarborough in Dallas, dispite the fact that the GM is an old friend of mine, and I have many friends working there, because I just can't do the travel. I'm a family man now, can't keep living the life of the Artisit. And yeah, there is no job at a Rennaisance Festival, that you pay someone to do, that you couldn't get some wide eyed college drop out kid to do, half as well, for free. |

I'm heading back to a ren faire in two weeks after a break from a few years. Am I getting my usual day rate? No. Will I be able to eat and pay my rent? Yes. Will I get to have some fun playing a character that I love and haven't brought out for a while? Absolutely.
The thread originally began with a question about money. The secret that is no secret is merch. You can make more money with merch at a ren faire than almost anywhere else. I worked the PA faire with Elmo Gibb for a number of years; among other concessions, he owned 'fried ________ on a stick'. He discovered if it was fried, it sold. If it was on a stick, it sold. He confirmed this the day he sold a fried stick on a stick. -Brian |
