Hi Jeff,
I'm looking forward to the launch of The Lecture Network (although I'll be in South Korea for the preview show...I hope I can catch it!) It's great to be able to pick your brain this week: As a working pro with a real ACT, made up of structured, signature material that you've been doing for years, how do you go about customizing shows for corporate clients, repeat bookings and different audiences? How often (or rarely) do you add material to your repertoire? Thanks, Matt Roberts |

GOOD question! You sound like a pro!
As with most pro entertainers, I have my "A" act. That would be my strongest material. That act is normally 45 minutes. . the generally accepted length of a one-nighter show. This show, however, could be as long a 70 minutes - as I have done frequently - just by having an audience that is really ready for entertainment. They're having a ton of fun. . laughing at everything. . .I can do no wrong. . . .we're ALL having a great time. Time gets lost and the show goes longer, mostly because of laughter and ad-libbing from me. If someone wants me back, I will generally do 25% of the same material and 75% change. I have another hour's worth of material that I can do for those audiences who have seen me before. Again, this doesn't happen overnight. I takes time to accumulate good materical and effects to perform. Hey, when you get to be my age (anybody guess?), with as many shows as I've done, you collect good material for yourself. I work on a new effect every 3-6 months. . but that doesn't mean I put it in the show. I'll work on it . .throw it in the show 3 times. . . . if it's not working, I'll never do it again no matter how much I like it. I would work on more. . . but a pro generally is too busy with booking his act once he's got something good to sell.

Thanks Jeff! I am a pro but a young pro. I'll need time to gain that reserve material. Great information! Thanks.
