I sit here watching some Cyril from youtube and it occurs to me. Yes, this man is amazing, but even he is resorting to the benefits afforded to him via editing. Many of you have seen his glass table effects. The video showing first the coin through glass then the salt shaker through glass. I must say, I'm more impressed with the coin, but I, myself, could never sell the salt shaker. Cyril truly is amazing. But while I won't go into any detail what's going on to accomplish the coin through glass, I will say that I'm a little disappointed with the portrayal of Cyril's "clean up." It's edited out. The effect appears amazing, and I'm sure that's true in person as well. However, television/youtube viewers are more amazed because of 55 frames worth of editing. Kind of upsets me and astonishes me as well.
All that being said, I also wanted to point out something I noticed while watching the same clip. Here http://youtube.com/watch?v=V-DqqsRGLZo Cyril goes 17 seconds without saying one English word. There is not one more word of English spoken by Cyril or the commentator for another one minute and thirty seven seconds. Yet one amazing effect has taken place and another is just seconds away. Noticing that made me realize something. Lately, I've been thinking it's my endless patter that's allowing me to get away with my miracles. I've come to rely on it. Sometimes too much. Cyril kind of made me look at the fact that words are almost unnecessary when you really got skills. Long,I know....sorry. nr |

Yes, you don't need to ramble on during a routine.

My English speaking is not so much good. I am imspired by Cyril when he says only "watch" commanding the eyes with his movement and his aura of stage. This is something to be studied for our own presentations.

I agree that you can accomplish something amazing with minimum or no patter.
but if you do that, just perform your routines using phrases and words like "if I do this then this happens" and "watch", what makes you different from all other performers? where is your originality? I am still performing and learning keeping one thing in mind: have a original and fun character, write your own patter, study all possible scenarios and practice like crazy! it still works very well for me and that makes my audiences have a fun and unforgettable evening. all the best -Matt

Does he actually do any ungimmicked effects?
Just wondering because of the things I have seen there wasn't a single one which wouldn't be gimmicked/prepared in one way or another... But I haven't seen a lot of him yet. |

He is very skilled at sleight of hand and has many effects that utilize no gimmicks.
do a search on youtube and you will get tons of results. all the best -Matt

Even his gimmicked effects need some sleight of hand. Even in the link the poster showed you see some sleight of hand in the 5th second.
But I agree with you... Almost all his effects are gimmicked. And not with buying a gimmick for only 50$ or 1000$ OR so. To preform his effects you need a very very big bank account. Still I think he's amazing, and his magic is super. Nice to watch over and over again. Even when you see someting funny still the rest is super |

He is an amazing and dynamic performer.
I wish I could find a clip of his FISM contest, as I hear is was one of the most elaborate ones ever. Anyway, he is a HIGHLY accomplished sleight of hand artist. And true, he uses some edits. But even on the coin through glass, I don't care the the clean-up was edited. None of the actual effect was, because watching enough times you can finally follow it. The man is a genius, he really is. I have only seen him ever flub one thing. It was one crucial moment during a really amazing card-thru-window (on a submarine). Beyond that one flub, everything I've ever seen of his is truly spectacular. |

Just to clarify: I didn't mean to say that he isn't skilled or can't do sleight of hand. I just hadn't seen him doing any 'pure' sleight of hand tricks.
He definitely is a great performer and artist, and I never meant to say anything other than that. |

Wonderful performer. "One we could really learn from" just thru studying performance.
