Today I received "The Scribe" from Bryn Reynolds. I have to say that this is by far one of if not THE best pocket writer on the market. It uses a real Fischer Space Pen cartridge that utilizes nitrogen at nearly 50 pounds per square inch, ink is continuously fed to the tungsten carbide ball, allowing the user to write at any angle, even upside down, or in zero-gravity. No more worries about it stopping to write, astronauts use these on all flights. Thanks for the great product Bryn!

I also received The SCRIBE. It is amazing. I can already see that this will replace my NW and Super Sharpie Mini. I have not used a boon type writer before, and am getting used to slipping it on and off. But, for the first time I am seriously considering pocket writing. And Bryn's suggestions in the instructions are great.

I understand that Bryn is currently out of The SCRIBE and don't know if he will be able to get more, but if he does sell them again in the future, I recommend them highly.

yes gabe it does. the scribe uses the Fisher cartridge which astronaugts use. it's nitrogen filled so you can write upside down or at any angle without worrying about the ink not coming out.

Thanks, Lunatik. The Fisher cartridge is larger than a Zip, though. I guess this is a custom job?

No, the Scribe *does not* use a different cartridge. They both use (not coincidentally) the same Pressurized Fisher Space Pen cartridge.

Thanks, Michael. An actual Fisher pen is longer than the Zip pen, however. Is the Scribe longer than a Zip? (Just curious as I'm looking for just the right size to PW)

PM'd you.

For everyone else, The Scribe is certainly recommended for nothing more than the detailed instructions Bryn includes.

As per what MichaelSibbernsen wrote above, it is NOT a coincidence they both use the same cartridge as the SCRIBE actually IS a ZIp pen that is covered with a few layers of flesh-colored latex. Fischer makes several models of cartridges for various pens and they are great quality.

wrong assumption on my part as I had bought a couple of zip pens and no mention of the fisher cartridge was mentioned on the package. anyway of knowing the exact part# to replace the cartridge? I've looked online and they all seem super long for use with my scribe

Zip Pen has the refills available via mail-order at http://www.zippen.com/. The cost is $2.50 for 3 cartridges and includes shipping.

Thanks, Michael! You answered a couple PMs I have had.
However, let me assure all of you, it will be LONG time before you need a refil if you are only doing one-word, or initial, etc., pocket writing with these. Regardless, the refills he mentions above are CHEAP! Thanks!

Ok, now I'm totally confused. If Zip refills are suggested as above (FROM Zip pens), those are not Fisher pen cartridges. And as Lunatik mentioned, the Fisher cartridges all look too long. So who makes the original cartridge for the Scribe, Zip or Fisher, and if it's Fisher, how does one get a refill the right size?

Gabelson,

Fisher makes a few different Space Pen or Space Pen modular refills depending on the type of pen you have. The PR series for the traditional Fisher branded Space Pens, the "Space Ball" refill, to bring Fisher Space Pen technology to a variety of non Fisher pens, and the Zip Pen refill, made specifically for the Zip (and therefore the Scribe). You may be able to find the Fisher Zip Pen refill at some online sources, but would most likely be wisest to buy directly from zippen.com .

Good news for anyone interested in THE SCRIBE:

I secured some more of these and will be finishing them this week. I THOUGHT I ordered just enough to fill existing back orders before I said I wouldn't make anymore but I guess I ordered double the quantity. I will have about 10 left over.

I'm just going to make them up all at once in the next few days and if anyone wants one from here at the Café I'll sell them for $15 pp in USA. (Reg. $18 retail) I have about $3 in each Zip Pen, plus 15 minsutes work, plus packaging and USPS shipping..don't ya wish every dealer layed out their pricing sceme?....)

It takes a few days to apply the layers and to dry so they should ship at the start of next week.

Thanks again for the interest in my effects, guys!

I used the zip when it first came out. I am one of those people that goes to office supply stores looking for mentalism tools each week when I have the time. (shh... don't tell the men in white coats)

This was before I started making the "Lincoln's Perfect Pocket Pencil" (LP3)

The reason I made the pencil, and still use that over a pen is that I sometimes ended up up with ink smeared on the "prediction" or on my hand/fingers. Also, I found that I got better at writing using the pencil due to the lead dragging against the paper more than the smoothness of the ink. It is a more tactile experience.

But, if you are stuck on wanting it to be ink, (and based on what others are saying about the included instructions) I would definitely recommend getting the scribe. Again, I haven't used it myself, but have used what Bryn said that it is based on.

I did play with the zip as a NW, and did not feel that it was very usable. Especially in close up situations. Just my opinion.

Lincoln
PS: I noticed on Bryn's site that he was in the army. I do want to point out that I have much respect for anyone that has risked their life to fight for our country. No matter what the political nature of the fight. The politicians pick the fights, the solders just do what they are told, and take all the risks.
