Alright, I have to admit... I'm nervous about this but I really would like to get a lot of opinions here.

So, below you'll find the URL to my website. If you would check it out and tell me what you think. Don't sugarcoat anything, lol. Really, rip me to pieces if you must. I've built it all from scratch (images, HTML coding, writing the content.. the works).

..And I really just want to know what my fellow magicians think about it.

(and the "K / W" link doesn't work right. Yet. So, ignore it. Totally... ignore it.)

Hi Aaron,

The friends portion of the Gallery will do nothing to get you bookings. I'd reserve that for myspace. I'd replace it with performance photos. (Photos of you performing and maybe a few that include some amazed volunteers reacting to your stuff )

Too much text..... more photos in the show page as well to instantly get your message across and let a possible client know more about you. My rule of thumb is that even a person who can't read english should be able to learn a lot from you from visiting your site.

The site navigates well and is user friendly. The layout is looking ok as well. I'd make the text font match your button font.

My main problem with the site is the video of the Losander Table Knockoff. The table doesn't look good ( most knockoffs don't ) and it tells your fellow magicians you're willing to perform with knockoff illusions. ( which is not a good thing. )

Good Luck,

Tim

Over all I like it, but frames based pages can prove difficult when it comes to printing and search engine mapping... also, white text on black backgrounds can get tricky of someone tries to print it out but doesn't know what they are doing.

The graphic style looks good, and it navigates pretty easily.

The KW link on the content pages doesn't go anywhere, and on the splash page goes to an amusement park site... but there is no explanation as to why.

I would also remove the friends pictures or put it in a hidden page for, well, your friends.

Over all it IS wordy and some people like that. Best thing is to give them the best of both worlds. Do bullet sales type copy FRIST, the follow with the rest, or have another page with a "more details" link.

I'd say it is as good or better than 80% of the sites for solo performers... Keep up the good work and kudos for you for asking for feedback and criticism!

Thanks guys!

And like I said, the K / W link isn't operating the way it's supposed to right now, so ignore it. The "amusement park" is actually my regular gig, and that's where most of my clientele will be coming from. Though, I can see how a little more explanation would be helpful.

As far as the Losander "knockoff," I know it doesn't look that great. I have a VERY limited budget, and as much as I'd love to own an original, I instead worked for a few weeks on ideas and concepts and built one of my own. I've never been closer than 20 feet to a real Losander table, so I think my homemade version will suffice for the laypeople until the magical day that I can spring for a decent one.
At least don't get the impression that I'd PAY for something as terrible as what I built, hahaha.

And someone had PMed me that a couple of the Videos do not play all the way through. I'll see about getting that fixed within a day or so.

Would it be a bad idea if the "More details..." link you spoke of linked to a normal looking (black text on white background with pictures) page for printing? Or would that be too much of a contrast from the rest of the site?

And finally, Timothy, do you think it would still be easy to read if I matched up the graphic and text fonts? I thought a little about this when I was coding everything, and that big block font I used for the images seems like it would make it all REALLY difficult to read. Of course, I suppose it would be an incentive to use less text, hahaha. What are your thoughts?

Thanks again.

Hi Aaron,

The size of your font is fine. I was referring to the font itself. If you change it to something other than Ariel it will look better. The font that you used in your buttons may be a good place to start.

I PM'd you about the Table.

Best,

Tim

Aaron,

Are you doing this website to try and make money from booking shows?

Tim raises a point about fonts.

On a website, font choice is very important. As you can see on this site, Sans Serif is used exclusively. Serif fonts are hard to read on a screen, and this is what you have entirely on your site.

The general rule: Serifs for print, sans serif for web.

A great way to control this is with CSS. This way, you can change the layout of your site very easily without needing to change every page.

I like your overall layout. It is easy to navigate, and the button destinations are clear in terms of where they will ultimately take you. I also like the translucent button over the photo (and your main photo).

I agree with the comments above. I would suggest (as others have) that you change your fonts.

I do, however, disagree with Timothy above in that your friends photos have no place on the site. He is certainly correct that these photos will do very little to get you bookings, and that may have been the basis for his suggestion to omit that section. However, this is your site and you must determine what kind of message you want to convey to people. I think this section could be kept if you added some photos (as Timothy suggests) of audience members or folks you have performed for on more than one occasion and have developed a friendship with.

I wouldn't worry too much about the table knockoff. Timothy is right that it would look better with the real deal, but everyone has to start somewhere! If your audience (especially children!) is captivated by the illusion, you don't have to be fancy...at least not yet.

Looking good. Keep it up!

A little thing...

Can the thumbnails on the promo photos page be any larger? The headshots are OK at that size, but the "in action" ones are very very small (because of their composition) - I think it would be great if you could just add a bit to their size, so that I didn't feel complelled to click on every one to see what's there. This may mean you need to lose a few, but I don't think that would be the end of the world.

(and by a little bigger, I mean around 2x2 - think passport photo size)

I know what an undertaking something like this is, and it's really great. I hope you reap the benefits!

A side note, that I didn't think of until the person above mentioned why the friend photo's were "Ok."

I do feel that your pictures, over all tone, and so forth come accross as friendly and what I would call "Warm." Often, magician's sites come accross as being a bit arrogant, and you have avoided that nicely.

I have to pay a 10% royalty for using his name, which is why those are more expensive, but yes, I can. Smile

I would make one compilation video of the things you do. Looking through some of the video's potential clients probably think ther are somewhat long. I don't mind them up there, but I would make a complementary short highlight video.

Good luck with your site,

It stops?!?!
Ah! .: screams in pain :.
It's my only copy of that video.
I'll get another one recorded in the next day or so then.
Thank y'all for telling me -- I would have never known, had you not pointed that out.

And Jeroen, I've debated that 'highlites' idea in the back of my mind for a bit. Thanks for giving me some 'go ahead' on that. I'll have that done by next week, with luck.

I really appreciate everyone's support. Though nothing on the web has been changed yet, I've changed it on my copies of the files. They should all appear updated by Sunday.
