Saw a clip of Expert At the Card Table starring Allan Ackerman on an online vendor. I believe it was Houdini.

Not to be confused with the MM version with Simmon Lovell and Wesley James. This is L&L's version.

I thought this version was done by Geno Munari, not L&L. There is a thread about it on the Genii Forum.

As much as I like and respect Ackerman (and am looking forward to his Seattle lecture next month) I am a HUGE fan of Wesley James, and I am anxiously looking forward to receiving his EATCT DVD set (which I recently ordered) to arrive.

In the October MUM Mike Close wrote an article on Allan Ackerman and indicated that the Expert at the Card Table DVDs were to be released on October 13th. So far I can't find them on the Internet. I can't help wonder if Wesley James and Ackerman knew they were both working on the same project of bringing the sleights in The Expert At The Card Table to DVD?

According to my friend Frank Baxter Allan Ackerman and Wesley James are friends. So I'm still very curious about how they both tackled the same project. If they knew that they were both working on it, it might have made sense to team up. I dropped an email to Allan but have not heard anything yet.

Allan advertised he was working on the project, and then magic makers made it known that they were looking for someone to work on a project of their own. Geno definitely had the project in the works first, but Magic Makers Rushed to release the product first.
Allan told me that he wants everything to be perfect, so they keep reshooting, rewritting, and reediting the project so it is as good as can be. He also told me that he's on good terms with Wes, and that he thinks both projects should be in an Erdnase Fan's library. Allan's project will come out when it does. And, from what he showed me, it'll be worth the wait. Ben

I don't know Wesley James from Alan Ackerman outside of their DVD's and card work.
I do however know that the James set was released by Magic Makers after the Ackerman version had already been announced by Geno. This, along with the continuing disrespect for magic and magicians shown by Magic Makers is reason enough not to buy the Wesley James discs, and await the originally announced Alan Ackerman discs to be released by Geno. It's not about Wesley James, it's about Magic Makers.....if buy the discs you support them by default. As a lifelong Erdnase fan, there are times when I'm sorely tempted to buy the James discs. But in the end that would be a sign of support for Rob Stiff's business ethics, which any magician should avoid showing. |

To silverking,
I was really torn about this and I understand how you feel. However, Wes James is a great guy and was really trying to see if he could help bring Rob Stiff around to a more ethical approach to his company. I agree that he made a poor choice to work with Magic Makers. However, Geno Munari has a track record of taking forever to bring out a product and ultimately I would like to have both the Allan Ackerman DVDs and the Wes James DVDs in my library. After exchanging some email with Wes yesterday, I ordered his DVDs directly from him. I urged him to consider using L & L for future projects, although I don't know if he has any more plans to produce DVDs. I would love to see him do a DVD version of the stuff from Enchantments. Who knows when, if ever, Geno Munari will finish up the Allan Ackerman set? Mike Close wrote the article on Allan Ackerman in the October MUM a long time ago. The project had been long delayed at that point. He was told that the set was to be released on Allan's 60th birthday which was October 13th. John Moehring held the article for quite a while and published it in the October issue to coincide with the release of the DVDs. However, it is now November and there is no news of the planned release. Many of us have been waiting for years for Geno's big book on Jimmy Grippo. The Ackerman Expert at the Card Table DVDs may or may not ever come out. It's a shame because Allan has great chops and it would be fun to have these along with Wesleys to really get a handle on what the Erdnase material looks like in action. I'm also surprised that Darwin Ortiz did not tackle this project. I believe he has the chops to do it, but certainly Wes and Allan do as well. When I get the disks from Wes and have a chance to look at them, I'll write a review. I suspect I will like them a lot. Simon Lovell is another card worker with great chops and I usually enjoy his quirky sense of humor. Best to all, Dennis Loomis

Long ago I saw a allan ackerman effect, such triumph that I liked, I remember it was in red and black, and for the effect to two counts emsley. I think it was 3 phase, in which the letters are separated by color or similar ..... Some of you know the name of that effect. |
