I just bought a pack of mouth coils and can't, for the life of me, figure out how to work the things! Do they actually get placed in the mouth? ...because they seem to break easily and get soggy. Are they hidden in the palms? Any help is appreciated.

You can place them in the mouth, or just produce them from your fist. Your mouth or your fist holds onto the outside cover. Prepare the mouth coil by pulling out the center where it is split in half (usually white). Just pull out enough so you have something to grab when you are ready to make the production. The production consists of pulling out the center and continuing to pull out the chain of paper that forms until it is all used up. If you put them in your mouth, don't keep them there long enough to get soggy. Almost as soon as you palm the mouth coil into your mouth, grab the center and start the production. It should not have time enough to get wet, much less soggy.
More info on what you can do with mouth coils, how to make them yourself in the colors of your choice, etc., can be found in Eleazar Goodenough's book "Tear-Able Magic" on my site.

Who makes the set you have?
I've used Cresey's for years with no problems. If you have a "home made" version, well... It's a lot like loops, you get what you pay for.

There is one side that will have a "leader piece" that you grab. Place the coil in your mouth, and try not to leave it there long enough to get all "saliva'd" up. If you have to, use your teeth to grip the sides of the coil, and then reach in and grab the lead end. I am usually doing a kid routine, and I have the kid walk off pulling the streamer out.
If you are having massive difficulties you may simply have a bad batch of coils. I've never encountered that before, but I guess it could happen. Chris |

You may want to tape the outside of the coil with cello-tape - that may help you slow down the saliva wetting the paper.

Yes, I use massive amounts of these puppies! As James says the tape around the outside edge helps a lot! Also you would do well to 'massage' the coil a bit to loosen it up. This will help with the tearing issues. And yes, sometimes you just get a 'dud' coil. I had one that would pull out about 6 inches and break...repeat, repeat, reapeat...Arrrg! Most of the time it goes nice and easy and despite the issues some have over 'oral magic' I love this effect.
I usually buy the Cressey brand Jumbo coils. They are very consistent and reliable. Recently I got a set of jumbo coils from Daytona Magic that were another brand and measureably bigger. At first it was comical to stick that thing in the ole pie hole, however, once I got used to it...it did play bigger and so I may keep using them. Everyone has a different 'gag limit' and the various coils and sizes make it easy to determine the one you can entertain with. Good luck.

Another point to make is that:
1) you want to make sure that you "prime" the coil first. by this I mean taking out a bit of the paper and then rolling that together and twisting it. This gives you something for which to grab hold of at time of production. When you do this, make sure that you are getting paper from BOTH sides of the coil. Often times people will only pull from the one side and it can cause an easy break. 2) When you place it in your mouth (should you perform it this way) make sure it lays horizontally in the mouth and rests behind the teeth. this way you do not have to clamp down hard on it at all. the teeth and a slight pressure is all you need to be able to keep the coil flowing very well. BOTH sides of the coil??!
Never occurred to me to do it that way. Seems like you would end up with a streamer ½ as long as it would be from pulling it from just one side though...? Chris |

You can see where it starts in the middle. Gently pull it out a few inches, give it a twist as kyle mentions to make a little tail and you're ready to go.
I use them all the time as well. I'm also glad (thanks to posts here at the Café) that I can make my own if necessary.

I use Cresey coils and they are two coils side by side or one cut almost in half. So you are pulling from the middle of the coil. I think that is what Kyle is refering to. Since I have not used any other type I don't know how these are different from other manufacturers. ChrisG

If you want white mouth coils, Bazar de Magia has the best. Beyond that, I'd stick with David Cresey's, as they are the most reliable.
Basically, just like everyone has pointed to, you need to prime / prep the coil. And if you're like me and salivate a lot, you might want to try to suck your mouth dry before you load the coil. Another point is to keep it deeper than just barely inside your mouth, otherwise you'll be flashing the fact that there is something there feeding the strand. I always have terrible problems salivating, because I always talk a lot leading up to the mouth coil routine, and sadly on more than one occasion I've drooled while pulling them out, but there wasn't anything I could do at that point. Keep your head tilted slightly back, and it's comical if you move about or walk here / there while pulling it all out. |

Chris,
Sorry if I explained it incorrectly my friend. What I meant was that if you are looking down at the mouthcoil there are actually 2 sections that when pulled come out together to form the coil. There is a left section and a right section. What tends to happen is that performers start to pull from a section but are not actually pulling and getting the full coil coming out from both the right and the left. Kyle

I have to agree with Aaron! The Bazar de Magia mouth coils are EXCELLENT!!!
IMHO, they are the best I have used. Well, LOL, they are the only mouth coils I have used. LOL. Frank, They are EXTREMELY inexpensive! You can get a box of 12 Bazar mouth coils for about $5! I bought about 18 boxes at once and have a hole bunch left over! I use them all the time, so it was WELL worth the (little bit of) money! Once again, I have never used Cresey mouth coils before, only these, but honestly, I love the way these Bazar mouth coils come out and look! -Vinnie |

Here's an idea you may want to try without any salivating problem.
Tear a colored piece of streamer into pieces - bundle them together - and then pull out the colorful streamer - then bundle the streamer again and from there a nice colorful paper hat is produced. The effect would look like this - a colorful paper is shown, torn to pieces and tansformed into a colorful streamer which is then transformed again to a nice looking colorful paper hat. This would be good for children performances. This is slightly different from the one sold as paper to hat. Hope you enjoy doing this effect. No salivating problem, right? |

Bazar de Magia coils are, even at the most expensive, only about a dollar per coil (11.99 per package). And they hold up well and look "heavier" than paper, really.
I actually prefer them, not because of price, but because they don't break nearly as easily (because the strip is thicker) as Cresey's. Then again... David Cresey has a LOT of different styles (even MONEY PRINT) to play around with. It's really, as always, up you to.. the performer, to make up your own mind about your preferences. James, the idea with the colored streamer and hat is a neat idea. I've been using rainbow coils recently, as my regular gig has nearly 15 different colors of napkins. I simply "eat napkins" and pull them all back out. If I'm using white coils, I tend to finish up with, "Ladies and gentlemen: The Tapeworm!" |

I had once used them as a large th**b t*p and stuck it into a hank and produced it from there...

The morrissey ones are cheap and effective. I find, if you need to keep it in your mouth for a long time and you are using the tissue paper ones that if you cover the outside surface (not the layers of paper) with scotch tape, the paper is less likely to get moist and the production itself is not damaged.
