I mean how can I hide the downward motion of the gimmick
I feel like the audience can see how it works http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=......91&hl=en Posted: May 10, 2007 8:03am Another thing...is it better to move the base out of sight as I pretend to carry the carrousel off the base?...or do I just leave the base on stage. A friend suggested that as I pretend to carry off the carrousel from the base, the assistant takes the base out or completely off the stage. Is this okay? Wanlu, I didn't really see anything wrong with your presentation. I think you just need to work on the downward motion of your hand as the carrousel drops. You want to keep the top horizontal and at the same height throughout the routine. You might want to try sliding the "carrousel" off the base rather than lifting it up.
As to removing the base, this is just my opinion but I always think it looks "sneaky" or suspicious when the base is removed right away. There is no reason for it so I'd leave the base just as you did in the video. Even if the work area is small and cramped, this seems to be your last effect, so there is no reason to remove the base to make room for anything.

Hi Dave,
I appreciate your suggestions and I will try it at the next show I will try to slide it forward rather than upward...I think that might be a lot better ...this trick is actually performed in the mid part of the show...I also feel like its so sneaky to remove the base in a hurry Here's what we did the last couple of times which the video does not show... I placed the carrousel and Base to my left side as in the start of the routine in the video...I covered it at the same spot...carried the carrousel off the base and brought it with me to the center...pausing a few seconds before the assistant rolls out the base out of sight...then I do the vanish This one worked well but I will try your suggestion on Saturday and feel the difference. Thanks for you wonderful ideas Dave... Sincerely, Wanlu Posted: May 10, 2007 8:40am P.S. The kids get bigger everytime you change your avatar They grow fast Hi kids!!! Wanlu

Yes, the kids grow quickly. Lilly is almost 4 already. Seems like she was just born.
Since you do the carrousel in the middle of your routine, I would leave it on stage until after the vanish. That way you have a place to put the top and cover. Then your assistant can remove it to give you more room to work. That would be natural to me.

Wanlu, I think it is a distraction to the audience when having an assistant takes the table away. I think it would better if you rolled it off stage yourself. And bring back something else to perform if you can.
When the vanishing flash is in process, how about having a few feathers flutter to the floor the same time. That way you will be in control of them longer not looking to where you want them to look. After they see he feathers flutter to the floor, then you can place the props down on the table. Next, take a bow, nod your head (something requesting an applause), lastly roll away the table while they are clapping. Dynamike |

Hi Dynamike,
Great stuff BTW, How do I place feathers? or maybe confetti cos that idea makes a lot of sense regarding misdirection Let me know soon Thanks Wanlu

I would not know the best way unless it was in my hands. It would be up to you to experiment different type of ways.
Think about the following: #1. Putting a special hidden pocket in the fabric. #2. Grab the feathers from a part of your clothing with your left hand as it is behind the fabric before the audience sees the carrousel vanish. #3. Putting a secret section in the bottom of the top piece. It is where the feathers are stored. As the top spins at the end, the force causes the feathers to come out. |

Wanlu, I rewatched the video and Mike has a point about the assistant distracting the performance a bit. I think the problem is that he came out too soon. By just standing behind the table during your performance, the audience tends to watch him rather than you. It's just a timing issue. He really doesn't have to come out until you've vanished the carosel and are putting the top and cloth on the table.
I disagree that you should take the table off stage yourself however. That will put a break in your act. You said that the vanish is in the middle of your act. It's a logical series of events then to have an assistant move the table out of the way while you get set for your next effect. I think it looks a lot more professional if an assistant clears your stage rather than you. That's why they're called assistants. As for the feathers, if you want to add a bit of comedy to the act, then the feathers would be fine. They aren't necessary but if you want to use them, you have plenty of opportunity to steal a few during your presentation. You only need a few. They could be hidden behind the carosel, under your cloth, or even in your pocket. You turn the carosel completely around which I've never seen anyone else do and it's a nice touch. You could have the feather attached under the table and as you turn it around, you just palm off the feathers.

Hi Dave and Dynamike,
First off all..I appreciate all your great suggestions and I will surely try all those great stuff...until I find the best way to do it. I guess you also have to know that I peform for Families...adults and kids together... ...with the KIDS directly in front of me and the adults are way behind the children... It happened to me several times when a kid with a very loud voice shouted in my native language...translated would mean...IT WENT DOWN!!! pointing to the base Of course the adults were laughing because how can a big carrousel with 3 live doves fall down a very thin base but guess who was not laughing? ME I will have to agree with DAVE that leaving the base on stage would be more natural and really unsuspecting I LOVE to do it that way...I think that's the right way. Just leave it there...and then after another trick or two, my assistant takes it out of the stage for more space It's just that this afternoon...I tried carrying the cloth (Disguised as the Carousel) from the left side to the center...and as I go to the center, the assistant takes out the base...before I even do the vanish... This way...Im left on stage with just the cloth and the carousel top...no base. THIS PREVENTS THE SMART KIDS FROM SAYING the "IT WENT DOWN" line I also tried sprinkling confetti on the top...simply sprinkled on the top of the carrousel...when I ripped off the cloth, the confetti had a nice effect... Ill video it tomorrow and pls check it out again Again, thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it Sincerely, Wanlu Posted: May 12, 2007 10:21am Maybe having a couple of ways to do it is the answer... ...Do it as Dave suggested if performing for an adult crowd...No adult will say or even think of a big carrousel with three live doves, falling down a thin base ..and do it another way as another friend suggested, when I perform for children who are smarter than the adults and say the darnest things ...I will keep trying using other suggestions and hopefully I find out the best ways to perform it. Thanks everyone

I understand. Here are a few more tips:
1. Once the audience see you pick up the carousel, give the table a shove toward the assistant (on non-carpeted floors only). That will make it roll towards him so there will be less distraction by him and getting rid of the table quicker. 2. Perform it further back so the table will have less area to move away. That might also help the angle proving to the children it could not be in the base. While you are walking closer toward the audience for the vanish, the table is already gone. 3. Stand centered in front of the table as the carousel is vanished while the table is near you. It while help block the view of the table. If you notice a heckler earlier in the show, stand directly between them and the table to prevent the view. 4. Use a thinner metal leg so it will help prevent anyone thinking everything went there. 5. See if someone can make you a glass leg for the table so people can see thru. 6. Have the assistant turn around to push the table off stage to help block the view. When he pulls it, it shows the view longer. I am not suggesting you do what I mentioned. I'm just giving you thoughts you might want to play with to comfort you in your act. Dynamike |
